2. PhD Programs in Opto-Electronic neuromorphic computing

Summary of PhD Positions:

The aim of the project is to develop fundamental understanding of charge transport and light-matter interactions involved in the molecular materials, which can then be tailored to emulate brain-like computation. The PhD researcher will fabricate opto-electronics based on molecular tunnelling junctions consisting of tuneable organic molecules and thin films of flexible materials, perform electrical measurements, build optics to realise imaging and spectroscopy of the junctions, and analyse the electrical and optical responses of the system. This will eventually enable the evolution of molecular tunnelling junctions to be photonically active devices, which opens prospects for the innovative optical computing.

3. PhD Programs in Modelling the biogeomorphological evolution of marine sand

Summary of PhD Positions:

You will be one of the researchers in the OR ELSE project: Operational Recommendations for Ecosystem-based Large-scale Sand Extraction. Recently funded by the Dutch Research Council within the National Science Agenda (NWA-ORC), OR ELSE aims to design solutions that minimize the adverse ecological and societal impacts of large-scale marine sand extraction in the Dutch North Sea and elsewhere.

As a whole, OR ELSE consists of ten interlinked work packages involving a total of six PhD students and four postdocs working at various universities and research institutes in the Netherlands. The work package of this vacancy aims to determine the short-term sedimentological adjustment (several years) as well as the long-term (decadal) biogeomorphological evolution in response to large-scale extraction.

4. PhD Programs in Experimental Human Tissue Machining Properties

Summary of PhD Positions:

Mechanical, optical, electric and heat material properties of engineered materials are widely available in databases. Efforts are performed to generate similar values for human tissues, because they play a meaningful role in studying human pathologies and the development of so-called virtual twin models representing the human body. Unfortunately, up till now, there is gap in values of human tissue properties related to the ‘machining’, being it cutting and sawing or electrocautery or newer methods.

Knowledge of the properties is crucial in medical device development, tissue preparation for implant placement and contribute to minimizing the need for animal experiments. Moreover, these properties vary among humans and even per location in the body, so they require an effort to express them as dimensionless values independent of the chosen machines and measurement systems.

6. PhD Programs in Application of Complex Biomass Feeds to Heat and Electricity

Summary of PhD Positions:

This position is part of the BALANS project funded by RVO HER+ subsidy, where the University of Twente together with industrial partners: HoSt FT, HVC and Bio-energie Andijk, investigate the combustion behaviour of a mix of non-woody biomass fuels. The main aim is to get an insight into the processes and phenomena occurring during the complex biomass gasification and combustion on a grate. The knowledge will be further utilised to optimize the process and design a furnace characterised by ultra-low pollutant emissions.

7. PhD Programs in n Logistics – Simulation Modelling for Multi-Dimensional Construction

Summary of PhD Positions:

The Loqiquay project seeks to speed up renovation projects, developing logistics- and project control techniques, improving sustainability through closed-loop material cycles, and as a result reducing transport movements, damage to urban infrastructure, hindrance and emissions. To reach this goal, you will contribute to building a simulation model (Digital Twin) for joint logistics and project planning. It is important that logistical priorities and -decisions dynamically take into account the interests of involved partners.

8. PhD Programs in Systems Biology

Summary of PhD Positions:

Current animal and cell culture models are not accurate enough to predict the efficacy and toxicity of drugs. In this research project, titled ‘Advanced bioengineering strategy for production of human miniature hearts’, a multidisciplinary team consisting of (developmental) biologists, bioinformaticians, and mathematicians will encapsulate human stem cells in hollow miniature spheres made from hydrogel and use single cell OMICs analysis to make digital twins of the miniature hearts. The digital twins generated in this project allow investigating heart development and predicting the response of the heart to medication.

9. PhD Programs in numerical methods determining vibrations of coupled structures

Summary of PhD Positions:

You will model the physics of the coupled structure using dual variables, develop mixed numerical schemes and study the corresponding compatibility condition between the approximation spaces. Eventually, you can relax these conditions and quantify under which conditions the numerical error is still within a given tolerance or focus on solver strategies including preconditioning, possibly with multigrid or domain decomposition.

12. PhD Programs in Stabilization of gas-liquid foams using amphiphobic catalysts

Summary of PhD Positions:

Plastics are an essential part of modern society. Unfortunately, only a small fraction of these materials is recycled (9%) the rest are incinerated (12%) and released to the environment (79%). While conventional recycling can be increased, the inferior properties of the recycled materials, relative to virgin plastics, hinders economic profitability.

In this project we will tackle this issue by developing new materials and processes that can chemically “upcycle” plastics into added value products in foams stabilized by catalysts. In this project, funded by the Dutch Research Council (NWO) as part of the Talent Scheme VIDI, you will apply amphiphobic catalysts that can stabilize gas-liquid interfaces to study the formation of foams and their fluid dynamic behavior using high-speed thermal microscopy on micro-channel flow-reactors coupled to ex-situ analytics using HPLC and GC-MS.
