1. Fully Funded PhD Position in The knowledge politics of Artificial Intelligence in energy governance
Summary of PhD Program:
The Environmental Policy Group at Wageningen University is seeking a highly motivated PhD candidate to explore the emerging role of AI in the assessment and governance of energy and climate change. Interest is escalating on purported AI capacities in sensoring, data-gathering, simulation, and forecasting for policy planning. This can range from the design and control of buildings and energy grids, to ‘Digital Twins’ of complex technological, societal, and environmental systems.
Application Deadline: 20 January 2025
2. Fully Funded PhD Position in Influence of farmer behaviour on the effectiveness of vaccination and biosecurity to control avian influenza
Summary of PhD Program:
The project VIVACE, gathering 15 leading universities or research institutes and 5 private companies, puts together an ambitious doctoral network to integrate poultry vaccination approaches into efficient management strategies for HPAIV. This interdisciplinary project offers funding for 13 PhD scholarships along the continuum from virology and immunology to spatial and molecular epidemiology, computer sciences and social and behavioural sciences. Irrespective of their background, all doctoral candidates from VIVACE will benefit from a unique international training in these fields, as well as state-of-the-art soft skill development.
Application Deadline: 31 January 2025

3. Fully Funded PhD Position in Environmental and welfare impacts of vaccination to control avian influenza
Summary of PhD Program:
Highly Pathogenic Avian Influenza (HPAI) is a serious disease affecting poultry, with significant economic and public health implications. Vaccination and biosecurity measures (e.g., hygiene protocols or restricting farm access) are critical for controlling outbreaks, but not all farmers adopt these measures. This PhD project aims to develop a multiple burden model of avian influenza. This means that in close collaboration with other PhD projects within VIVACE (particularly with a project aimed at the economics and two projects aimed at the epidemiology of avian influenza) the environmental and animal welfare disease burden will be modelled.
Application Deadline: 31 January 2025
4. Fully Funded PhD Position in Circular Nutrients and Water in Zeeland
Summary of PhD Program:
This project strives towards finding solutions and/or innovations for optimizing the resource cycles of nutrients and water in the province of Zeeland. This implies preventing unwanted leaks from the cycles and promoting its intentional use by recovery and re-use. The main pathways of the nutrients and water are known. However, the magnitude of anthropogenic and natural macro-nutrient flows is not known and the same thus holds for a nutrient budget (what goes in and out and what is released to the (marine) environment), as well as a detailed water balance.

5. Fully Funded PhD Position in Effectively steering the regenerative agriculture transition
Summary of PhD Program:
The ReGENL project aims to develop a future-proof agricultural sector in which agriculture goes hand in hand with soil health, nature restoration, and a good revenue model for farmers. Between now and 2030, ReGeNL will support the transition to regenerative agriculture with 1000 farmers. The aim is to make regenerative agriculture the new normal by 2040. The project aims to be an accelerator for the transition to a regenerative, profitable and socially supported agricultural sector. It is embedded in a large consortium of partners from farming, processing to retail, banking and education.
Application Deadline: 20 January 2025
6. Fully Funded PhD Position in Microclimate selection by freely flying mosquitoes
Summary of PhD Program:
The project is in collaboration with international partners in Switzerland and Tanzania, with the joint aim to understand the microclimate selection behaviour of yellow fewer and malaria mosquitoes. Within this consortium, you will study the flight behaviour of these disease-transmitting mosquitoes when selecting their preferred microclimates. For this, you will perform microclimate selection experiments in large indoor climate-controlled cages with various temperature and humidity zones. You will use three-dimensional high-speed videography to track flying mosquitoes, airflow visualization and simulation techniques to quantify microclimatic conditions, and agent-based modelling methods to assess how flying mosquitoes select a specific microclimate.
Application Deadline: 13 January 2025
7. Fully Funded PhD Position in MiSeed
Summary of PhD Program:
This PhD project is part of the recently funded open technology project MiSeed, “The hidden potential of the seed microbiome: How does the seed microbiome shape seed performance and plant drought resilience?”. Plants grow in interaction with microbes in order to survive. These microbes can enter the next plant generation of the plant via the seed. The main research questions of this project are 1) to determine whether plant genetics and seed characteristics affect the recruitment of microbes, 2) to identity microbes that contribute to seed and plant performance under drought stress and 3) to understand the mechanisms underlying these beneficial plant-microbe interactions.

8. Fully Funded PhD Position in Machine learning in bio- and cheminformatics
Summary of PhD Program:
Molecules lie at the core of both chemistry and biology. They are the basis of all life and indispensable tools in medicine and agriculture. This broad range of molecular function is enabled by a vast diversity of molecular composition, structure, as well as the interaction within and between molecules. Therefore, the computational prediction of molecular functions requires a suitable computational representation of molecules and their interactions.
Application Deadline: 5 January 2025
9. Fully Funded PhD Position in Spatially Integrated Solutions for Desertification Resilience and Sustainable Land Management
Summary of PhD Program:
In this PhD position you will focus on and cross-link several lines of inquiry, including: 1. assessing and comparing the type and extent of land degradation in selected pilot areas, identifying key drivers, 2. analysing how climate change and other drivers may shape future degradation and sustainability; 3. developing a shared vision and pathways for what is preferable and achievable to prevent and reverse land degradation; and 4. assessing how current local innovations, proposed promising technologies, and other leverage points align with or are necessary to achieve that future vision.

10. Fully Funded PhD Position in Legitimacy of Water-Management Models: Social, Political, and Institutional Viewpoints
Summary of PhD Program:
In this PhD project, as part of the LEGIT project, you will investigate how water management models obtain the authority to serve as policy advisors for three different cases in which models are used to support water-management related decisions: one in the Netherlands, one in the US, and one in Australia. The research will explore political, social, and institutional processes, to understand how model legitimacy is established. This includes interviews with decision makers and other stakeholders. You will be part of an interdisciplinary team, where other team members will focus on the modellers and the model itself.
Application Deadline: 6 January 2025
11. Fully Funded PhD Position in Towards more resilient electricity grids using network and digital twin approaches
Summary of PhD Program:
In this project, a resilience assessment framework for electricity grids will first be developed, building on resilience theory and interdisciplinary methods in ecology and economics (e.g., the five Ws). Since energy systems can be modeled as networked systems, we will employ spatial and network analysis; where nodes represent components like substations and consumers, edges represent connections between them such as transmission lines, and network metrics can be used to identify critical components in the systems.

12. Fully Funded PhD Position in Legitimacy of Water-Management Models: Scrutinizing the model
Summary of PhD Program:
In this PhD project, as part of the LEGIT project, you will investigate how water management models obtain the authority to serve as policy advisors for three different cases in which models are used to support water-management related decisions: one in the Netherlands, one in the US, and one in Australia. Your research will specifically investigate the models underlying these decisions. You will conduct an extensive sensitivity analysis of these models, where the factors to investigate are based on interviews with policy makers, modellers and other stakeholders (these interviews are, at least partly, done by other team-members).
