Summary of PhD Program:
The project will focus on the study of the relationships between objective health data and green area availability where people live, and on the health benefits that can be expected by greening residential neighbourhoods, to identify what type of nature reduces stress best in real-life settings. The goals of the project are to study the extent to which socioeconomic health disparities may be reduced by making optimal use of the stress-reducing qualities of contact with nature, and to study which types of nature are most effective in this regard for people with a low socioeconomic status.

In the proposed research project, we aim to develop a reverse approach to tackling supply chain risks. 4. Fully Funded PhD Position in Microalgae Biotechnology
Summary of PhD Program:
In light of a joint research initiative “Let’s go VirAL” of the Laboratory of Virology and Bioprocess Engineering we are searching for a suitable candidate for a PhD project. This project aims to unravel the life cycle of a recently isolated DNA virus that infects microalgae, to enable development of a virus-based production platform in microalgae, which is also part of the aim of this project. A combined -omics and biochemical approach will be implemented to elucidate the virus life cycle at a molecular level during the course of infection and to identify and characterize the role of viral genes; this systematic study of virus infection in relation to host fitness will be carried out in small scale photobioreactors.
The PhD candidate will develop knowledge and expertise in the field of genetics, biochemistry, virology and microalgae biotechnology. Experience with microalgae physiology and/or virological research is highly recommended, and additional expertise in bioinformatics and large data-set analysis, software (R) programming and statistical analysis preferred.

5. Fully Funded PhD Position in Mosquito ecology, surveillance and diagnostics
Summary of PhD Program:
For predicting the epidemic or epizootic potential of diseases, it is critical to timely detect the circulation of pathogens, trace their (zoonotic) origins and establish which species contribute to transmission. This often requires elaborate tools and techniques that are not always available in areas where they matter most, such as in poor and remote communities in the Global South. Mosquitoes, but also the bloodmeals they carry, could be exploited to assess pathogen presence and circulation (not restricted to vector-borne pathogens). This approach is known as xenodiagnostics or xenosurveillance. The Laboratory of Entomology and the Bionanotechnology group of Wageningen University have teamed up to tackle this challenge. The team has close collaborations with Médécins Sans Frontieres to allow co-design and evaluation of suitable approaches/technologies.

Summary of PhD Program:
The proposed PhD project will analyse and compare alternative and self-organized pathways for food system transition, with a specific interest in unravelling how local communities and small and medium food enterprises creatively respond to the challenges related to crises and risks affecting food and nutrition security. The PhD research will include an interest in pathways emerging in the Global South while allowing space for comparative research. 9. Fully Funded PhD Position in Nitrous oxide emissions from agricultural soils
Summary of PhD Program:
Agricultural soils are the major source of the potent greenhouse gas nitrous oxide (N2O). There is clear potential to reduce N2O emissions by adapting nitrogen inputs and soil management. More insight is needed in the interplay of environmental, soil biological, and management factors that drive N2O emissions. You will assess mitigation strategies in field and lab experiments, including practices related to nitrogen management across various agricultural systems and soil types. You will have the opportunity to use state-of-the-art equipment and methodologies (such as isotopic labelling techniques, field gas analysers) to quantify N2O and related soil chemical and biological parameters.
