1. Fully Funded PhD Position in Chemistry, with a specialization in biochemistry

Summary of PhD Program:

In your PhD studies, you will use molecular biology/biochemistry approaches to characterize drug resistance mechanisms in representative species groups of the human microbiome. This will involve using genetic manipulation, high throughput growth measurements and biochemistry approaches for protein structure and function determination (e.g., X-ray crystallography, NMR, cryo-electron microscopy). You will learn how to use advanced bacterial culture conditions to grow the species of the human gut microbiome in the absence of oxygen. You will also learn how to analyze large datasets.

3. 03 Fully Funded PhD Position in Space Physics

Summary of PhD Program:

Plasma interaction with Mercury’s magnetosphere: Mercury’s small, internally generated magnetosphere is uniquely exposed to intense solar wind and extreme space weather due to its proximity to the Sun. This PhD project aims to provide a comprehensive understanding of the complex interaction between the solar wind and Mercury during extreme events (e.g., Coronal Mass Ejections) using Amitis, a state-of-the-art hybrid-kinetic plasma model (www.amitiscode.com). By comparing model results with NASA’s MESSENGER and ESA’s/JAXA’s BepiColombo observations, the research aims to deepen our understanding of Mercury’s magnetosphere-interior coupling and the response of the coupled system to extreme events. The project leader is Associate Professor Shahab Fatemi (shahab.fatemi@umu.se), and the project includes collaboration with international partners, including INAF (Italy) and the University of Michigan (USA).

4. Fully Funded PhD Position in Chemistry, in biochemistry on the microalgal cell wall

Summary of PhD Program:

Despite their promise as a sustainable feedstock for biotechnological applications, the use of microalgae has been hindered by high monetary and energy costs associated with the processing steps that follow cultivation, particularly the extraction of valuable compounds from the algal biomass. Microalgae are surrounded by a thick cell wall, which presents a challenge to these processes; this cell wall first must be broken, removed, or enzymatically digested. Even though knowledge of the microalgal cell wall is highly important to make algal biotechnology energetic and economic feasible, very little is known about the diverse cell walls of Chlorophyta, the green unicellular microalgae used in biotechnological applications.

5. Fully Funded PhD Position in Computing Science with focus on Compilation of Linear Algebra Expressionst

Summary of PhD Program:

Linear algebra expressions are evaluated in an efficient and robust way by mapping them to a carefully chosen sequence of calls to optimized functions as offered by libraries such as BLAS and LAPACK. The mapping is by no means unique, and different mappings differ in terms of time, space, and accuracy. When the sizes of the matrices are unknown at compile-time, as is often the case, then the problem is further complicated by the fact that no single mapping is optimal for all combinations of matrix sizes. As a consequence, any code generated (at compile-time) to evaluate the at run-time) must consist of more than just a single sequence of function calls.

6. Fully Funded PhD Position in Computing Science with focus on Visual Language Groundinga

Summary of PhD Program:

The PhD student will focus on addressing the challenge of visual blindness in large language models (LLMs)—that is, the inability of a model to effectively process or understand visual information. This work involves integrating visual encoders with language models to create multimodal systems. The emphasis is on agentic approaches, where an LLM interacts with visual tools, which may themselves be neural networks. Central challenges include enabling LLMs to reason about visual structures, designing appropriate benchmarks for the target domain, and determining which fusion architectures best balance performance, interpretability, and computational efficiency.

7. Fully Funded PhD Position in Chemistry, with a specialization in biochemistry

Summary of PhD Program:

You will use molecular biology and biochemical techniques to express and purify proteins from different bacterial groups. Subsequently, you will compare their structural and functional properties. Your tasks will include protein purification and biochemical analyses to study protein structure and function (e.g., X-ray crystallography, NMR, cryo-electron microscopy). Additionally, you will investigate how these proteins interact with each other and with various antibiotics or other small molecules using techniques such as ITC and BLI. A third part of the project will analyze how bacteria are affected by these molecules.

8. Fully Funded PhD Position in Chemistry, with a specialization in Biophysical Chemistry

Summary of PhD Program:

As a PhD student, you will be part of a research team that combines experimental and computational methods to understand membrane protein transport and signalling processes. The focus is to develop novel structural biology techniques with the aim to understand membrane protein transport and regulation with applications in heart disease and antimicrobial resistance. The group has pioneered synchrotron-based time-resolved X-ray solution scattering of ATP-dependent protein reactions with significant contributions to the field both with respect to experimental design and high-performance computing protocols for data analysis, visualization, and interpretation. We also use and develop new cryo-electron microscopy techniques.
