5. Fully Funded PhD Position in Optimise and automate pre-production for wire based Directed Energy Deposition (w-DEDAM) production
Summary of PhD Program:
This 4-year, fully funded PhD project centres on the automation and optimisation of the pre-production process for wire-based Directed Energy Deposition Additive Manufacturing (w-DEDAM). It is supported by EPSRC Industrial Cooperative Awards in Science & Technology (CASE) training grants and WAAM3D Ltd, our industry partner. Additionally, the industrial partner offers a 3-month placement annually during the project. The project aims to explore cutting-edge digital technologies for w-DEDAM pre-production, including machine learning, deep learning, Design for Additive Manufacturing (DfAM), and advanced optimisation algorithms.
Application Deadline: 12 Feb 2025
6. Fully Funded PhD Position in Multi-body Hypersonic Aerodynamics
Summary of PhD Program:
This is a full funded PhD (fees and bursary) in hypersonic aerodynamics in collaboration with EPSRC. The overall aim of the research is to investigate what are the aerodynamic interference characteristics, at hypersonic speeds, that are likely to adversely affect multibody separation. The research encompasses experimental and computational elements to evaluate the aerodynamics of multibody separation. Experiments using canonical configurations in the Cranfield hypersonic gun tunnel will statically represent the multi-body aerodynamics. The computational work will use Cranfield’s high-order UCNS3D code.to simulate hypersonic multi-body aerodynamic interactions and coupled trajectory modelling.
Application Deadline: 23 Oct 2024
7. Fully Funded PhD Position in Hydrogen for future space transportation
Summary of PhD Program:
R2T2 is an integrated doctoral programme run across eight UK universities, which seeks to provide the opportunity to pursue a PhD in space propulsion technologies. The programme is fully funded, and a budget of approximately £50k will be available to support practical experiments, including hotfire, cold-flow, wind tunnel experiments, or similar, according to the specific project’s needs. Where hotfire is indicated, technical oversight will be put in place, and the use of the MachLab test site at Machrihanish Airbase will be offered, although not required. In addition, a practical and online training scheme will be put in place, designed to offer an introduction to the skills required in the space launch industry.

8. Fully Funded PhD Position in Gene editing to improve salt tolerance in legumes
Summary of PhD Program:
Soil salinization, occurring either naturally (through rainfall salt deposition or weathering of parent rock material) or as a result of anthropogenic activity (poor irrigation and land management practices, rising sea levels) poses a global challenge for crop production and is expected to intensify with projected climate change scenarios. Leguminous crops provide a valuable source of dietary fibre and protein for human and animal consumption and apart from being a staple in many parts of the developing world, they also provide key environmental and socioeconomic benefits. The natural symbiosis with nitrogen-fixing bacteria in their roots, means that not only they require lower amounts of synthetic fertilizers, but they can also substantially improve soil quality too.
Application Deadline: 11 Dec 2024
9. Fully Funded PhD Position in Extreme learning to handle ‘Big Data’
Summary of PhD Program:
A funded PhD studentship is available within the Autonomous and Cyber Physical Systems Centre at Cranfield University, Bedfordshire, UK. As aerospace platforms go through their service life, gradual performance degradations and unwarranted system failures can occur. There is certain physical information known a priori in such aerospace platform operations. The main research hypothesis to be tested in this research is that it should be possible to significantly improve the performance of extreme learning and assure safe and reliable maintenance operation by integrating this prior knowledge into the learning mechanism.

10. Fully Funded PhD Position in Developing ontologies for digital engineering and manufacturing
Summary of PhD Program:
Across manufacturing, data is growing in abundance, and creating numerous challenges as to how to make better decisions over time. As the amount of data increases, it is necessary to store, standardise, process, and make data accessible in a way that gets beyond the quirks of different teams and technology. This requires interoperability to be in place to sustain the potential value that we can get from Cyber Physical Systems (CPSs) and the ever-growing richness of information. Interoperability is a vital aspect of modern technology, driving the seamless interaction and collaboration between diverse data sources, software/hardware systems, applications, devices, and enterprises.
Application Deadline: 09 Oct 2024
11. Fully Funded PhD Position in Design and implementation of a self-sealing specimen chamber to allow shock loading of hazardous materials
Summary of PhD Program:
The purpose of the project is to design and prove a self-sealing containment vessel that can be attached to the muzzle of a gas gun. This would enable the study of materials which would constitute a hazardous contamination risk if undertaken in an open laboratory. The containment vessel must be attachable to the gas gun in a manner that prevents damage to the gas gun, or the containment vessel, upon firing at velocities up to 1km/s.

12. Fully Funded PhD Position in Aero-Engine Experimental Aerodynamics
Summary of PhD Program:
This is a full funded PhD (fees and bursary) in propulsion system aerodynamics in collaboration with Rolls-Royce and EPSRC. Fundamental understanding of aerodynamic flows is at the heart of aero-engine design and a key research area is the ability to measure complex flow fields. Within that context, the overall aim of this PhD is to further develop non-intrusive laser-based flow measurement systems with new event-based cameras for stereo PIV measurements. This will be used to characterise the dynamic flow distortion within confined regions such as convoluted aero-engine intakes. This is expected to yield significant benefits in advanced aerodynamic measurements where there is a keen interest in obtaining measurements close to surfaces.
