1. Fully Funded PhD Position in Sustainable Rubber Chemistry and Technology
Summary of PhD Program:
Rubbers are ubiquitous materials in modern society and have played important roles across industries. As the key component to connecting the vehicle to the road, the performance of the tyre directly determines the fuel efficiency, wear emission, and safety. The development of sustainable and high-performance elastomers is a key step towards net-zero future. We are seeking an enthusiastic and highly-motivated polymer researcher to investigate novel dynamic rubber technology and advanced rheology characterisation and develop an in-depth understanding of rubber circularity.

2. Fully Funded PhD Position in Fundamental understanding on biomass application in net-zero EAF steelmaking
Summary of PhD Program:
Steel is an irreplaceable material in our modern life, while steel industry accounts for 7% of global anthropogenic CO2 emissions. A variety of low emission steel manufacturing processes, including the proven EAF route, are being developed to convert the currently dominating Blast Furnace – Basic Oxygen Furnace (BF-BOF) steelmaking route to low CO2 or CO2 free steelmaking route. In conventional EAF steelmaking, significant amount of fossil fuel such as anthracite is charged or injected into the bath to provide chemical energy and create slag foaming, which will not be possible in future scrap-based net-zero EAF steelmaking. In the scrap-based, net-zero EAF steelmaking, carbon neutral biomass could be the major carbon source to provide chemical energy and create slag foaming for the EAF process.

3. Fully Funded PhD Position in Behaviours of Nitrogen in the Future Green Steelmaking Routes
Summary of PhD Program:
Steel is an irreplaceable material in our modern life, while steel industry accounts for 9% of global anthropogenic CO2 emissions. A variety of low emission steel manufacturing processes are being developed to convert the currently dominating Blast Furnace – Basic Oxygen Furnace (BF-BOF) steelmaking route to low CO2 or CO2 free steelmaking route. However, one of the technical challenges for the new steelmaking routes is the achievable nitrogen content in the steel produced. Some high-quality steels demand good formability and toughness, along with good surface quality, which necessitates controlling nitrogen to very low levels of ~20-30 ppm.

4. Fully Funded PhD Position in EngD in AI Assurance and Verification
Summary of PhD Program:
Artificial Intelligence plays a significant role in modern society and business, and this is only set to grow. The technology features in the electronic games we play, the cars we drive and the chatbots we engage with. The UK recently hosted leaders around the world for a Global AI Safety Summit, highlighting the importance of understanding and controlling how AI operates and is deployed. The UK has one of the strongest AI markets globally with continuing government support and a thriving academic and innovative technology industry. To successfully bring AI-based systems to the general public and ensure adoption and sufficient trust, there is a need for AI assurance.

5. Fully Funded PhD Position in Advanced Characterisation of Large Format Lithium-Ion Battery Failures
Summary of PhD Program:
WMG and Jaguar Land Rover have been researching battery safety for over 10 years. This includes the creation of novel and repeatable methods of battery failure initialisation using laser technology and the integration of sensors within lithium-ion batteries to measure internal battery states such as core temperature, gas pressure and gas composition. Much of this research is often discussed using generic terms such as “battery thermal runaway” or “battery abuse testing”.

6. Fully Funded PhD Position in Advanced Battery Design for Future Electric Vehicles
Summary of PhD Program:
Significant advances have been made understanding the performance of lithium-ion batteries. However, less consideration has been given to the wider, multidisciplinary engineering challenges associated with battery design and manufacturability that will underpin the successful design of new battery systems for future electric vehicles (EVs) and aircraft. Meeting future EV requirements mandates a fundamental revaluation of how batteries are designed. WMG and Jaguar Land Rover have identified that significant innovation opportunities exist around new battery concepts that improve performance and sustainability.

7. Fully Funded PhD Position in Manufacturing Routes for Highly Controlled Structured Metamaterial Nanoparticles
Summary of PhD Program:
This is a challenging and unique PhD opportunity for a student with a good materials, physics and/or engineering background, interested in applying their knowledge to the rapidly growing and multidisciplinary field of metamaterials. The structured nature of metamaterials enables their physical properties to go beyond what their non-structured material equivalents can offer and they are sought after for a wide range of technologies, from microwave electromagnetic devices, such as those required for future 6G communications systems, solid-state battery components, photovoltaic systems, sensors, catalysts, and energy harvesting technologies.

8. Fully Funded PhD Position in Mono-Material Barrier Films for Sustainable and Circular Plastic Packaging Applications (MonoFilm)
Summary of PhD Program:
Plastic packaging materials play a crucial role in today’s society, offering advantages such as versatility, hygiene, safety, lightweight properties, and, notably, a low carbon footprint when compared to alternative materials. Despite the apparent simplicity of plastic bags or wrappers for everyday items like crisps, cheese, or ham, they often consist of multiple layers of different plastic types. While these layers effectively preserve food freshness and minimize waste, they pose significant challenges in terms of recyclability.

9. Fully Funded PhD Position in Operation of Battery Materials
Summary of PhD Program:
In this project extensive use will be made of this new system to develop strategies for studying the degradation of buried interfaces and structure dynamics in state-of-the-art high Ni NMC cathodes as a function of cycle ageing i.e. the evolution of the CEI. The system provides some unique opportunities for developing powerful new ways to characterise these controlling interfaces and this will form the basis of this project.

11. Fully Funded PhD Position in Development of Sustainable and Smart Battery Cells
Summary of PhD Program:
Electrifying the transportation sector is imperative to achieving net zero targets. Developing next-generation batteries will underpin this transition, particularly for heavier duty transportation, such as larger industrial vehicles, and the marine and aerospace sectors. The global demand for lithium-ion batteries is set to reach ~4.7 TWh by 2030 (currently ~ 700 GWh).
There is a need to construct a robust battery circular economy to sustain this growth in the electric vehicle (EV) market. Currently, the process of triaging a battery pack at end of first-life is expensive, hazardous and time consuming, with limited prior knowledge of the life of the batteries. Smart cells (cells with embedded sensors, e.g., temperature/pressure) placed within a battery pack, can be used to better track state of health (SoH) during the first-life of the pack.
