1. Fully Funded PhD Position in Biological Physics
Summary of PhD Program:
The research group Biological Physics engages in fundamental and applied research questions in the field of experimental cellular biophysics. In the focus of our research are mechanical cellular processes such as the interaction between microparticles and cells. To enable our research, we are developing and using quantitative tools such as magnetic tweezers, optical tweezers and microfluidics in combination with high temporal and spatial resolution light microscopy. In addition, we are using and developing methods for digital image processing and computer simulations. You can find further information about our research at www.biophys.uni-bayreuth.de.
Application Deadline: 30 April 2023
2. Fully Funded PhD Position in Experimental Physics
Summary of PhD Program:
Our research is focused on elucidating and quantifying physico-chemical principles of dynamic self-organization and transport processes in soft and living matter on different length and time scales. This includes, for example, anomalous diffusion processes in crowded media far away from thermal equilibrium, the formation and homeostasis of cellular organelles, or the dynamic self-organization of cells on structured substrates and during embryogenesis. To this end, we mainly employ advanced light microscopy methods (e.g. lightsheet microscopes) and microfluidics, complemented by custom-made software tools for analysis and simulation.
Application Deadline: 15 May 2023

3. Fully Funded PhD Position in fundamental turbulence research
Summary of PhD Program:
We are looking for excellent, highly motivated early-career researchers to join our research team. The ideal candidate should have a master’s (doctoral) degree in physics with a background in complex systems, fluid dynamics and statistical physics. Programming skills as well as experience in the numerical simulation of nonlinear partial differential equations are a requirement. Fluency in English is expected.

4. Fully Funded PhD Position in atmospheric transport of microplastics
Summary of PhD Program:
In the experimental project B05 “Behaviour and effect of microplastics in the land surface-atmosphere system” you will investigate the transport of microplastic (MP) particles at the interface between the air, soil, water, and plant surfaces. We aim to understand and quantify the mechanisms of aerial resuspension, dispersion and aging of environmentally relevant real-world MP including tire wear and fibers. Results from laboratory experiments under controlled conditions will be combined with those from field collaborative (across several projects) mesocosm experiments and flow-resolving computational fluid dynamics (large eddy simulation, LES) will enable a fundamental assessment of typical residence times and estimating the environmental impact of aerially dispersed MP.

5. Fully Funded PhD Position in simulation of microplastic transport in soils
Summary of PhD Program:
Within the theoretical project B06 “Behaviour and transport of microplastics in disturbed and undisturbed soils” you will investigate the transport of microplastic particles in natural soils. The goal of the project is to understand the physical mechanics which drive or hinder infiltration and transport through the porous soil matrix. You will heavily use methods of computational fluid dynamics such as Lattice-Boltzmann, Immersed-Boundary and Volume-of-Fluid. Due to the large separation of length scales, the project is very challenging from a numerical point of view.

6. Fully Funded PhD Position in Biochemistry / Microplastics
Summary of PhD Program:
We are recruiting a talented individual to join our team as a graduate student. Within the PhD project, we will explore the mechanism and application scope of enzymatic and photooxidative fragmentation of microplastic particles. Our laboratory lays the molecular foundation by biochemically producing and biophysically characterizing enzymes that mediate oxidative and radical-mediated polyolefin degradation.
By investigating the degradation and fragmentation of polyolefins as a function of light, temperature, and solvent conditions, the project will provide unprecedented insight into degradation mechanisms and will thereby identify innovative strategies for prospectively removing microplastics from the environment. The thesis research is embedded within the collaborative research centre 1357 ‘Microplastics’ recently renewed by the Deutsche Forschungsgemeinschaft. The highly collaborative project will be conducted in vibrant and close collaboration with polymer chemists, biochemists, biologists, and geoscientists.

7. Fully Funded PhD Position in Forest Biogeochemistry
Summary of PhD Program:
The project is part of a long-term and large-scale deadwood experiment (BELongDead) within the Biodiversity Exploratories. In this experiment, functions and process rates of lying deadwood of 13 tree species have been studied at 30 forest sites in three regions in Germany for more than 14 years. This project focusses on the production and traits of humus from decomposing deadwood which is considered as potential source of carbon sequestration in forest ecosystems. It combines field observations, chemical and spectral analyses and microbial processes to assess the quality, stability and functions of tree species specific deadwood humus. Stable isotopes (13C, 15N, 18O) will be applied to quantify microbial process rates including microbial growth, turnover, carbon use efficiency, respiration and nitrogen fixation. In cooperation with project partners, the relationship between chemical-microbial traits and microbial communities of deadwood humus is being investigated.

8. Fully Funded PhD Position in eukaryotic translation regulation
Summary of PhD Program:
In this project you will continue the ongoing work in our group about translation regulation during dosage compensation in the model organism Drosophila melanogaster. We use this system to understand how RNA-protein interactions repress the translation of a specific mRNA, which prevents a lethal imbalance in the expression of X-chromosome linked genes. To decipher the mechanism of this process, you will use molecular biology, biochemistry, and structural biology methods. During the course of the next three years, you will be able to use NMR spectroscopy, X-ray crystallography and scattering, and cryo-EM.
