The successful PhD student will carry out research within an interdisciplinary research environment that includes the discrete mathematics group of the Department of Mathematics and Mathematical Statistics and the Graduate School of Gender Studies. In the Educational Measurement unit, we do research related to quality issues (reliability, validity, fairness) and individual and group differences in large-scale educational tests and other educational and psychological assessments. Researchers at the department are linked to one of Umeå University’s priorities research areas: Learning and brain plasticity throughout the life span (see link here), and the doctoral position till be oriented towards this research area, with focus on learning and cognitive performance over time. More specifically, the research will explore relationships between early school achievements and cognitive ability later in life, and factors that may affect these relationships.

Summary of PhD Program:
In the Educational Measurement unit, we do research related to quality issues (reliability, validity, fairness) and individual and group differences in large-scale educational tests and other educational and psychological assessments. Both the Swedish test for admission to higher education (SweSAT) and Swedish National Tests are developed at the department, and the doctoral student will preferably concentrate the research to one or both these test environments. The position will be oriented towards issues of digitalization of educational tests, alternatively to issues of test adaptations for students with special needs. The specific focus of the doctoral project will be jointly decided by doctoral student and supervisor, but examples of relevant topics for investigation could be issues of fairness and inclusion; effects of digitalization on performance and test development; how test format affects the construct measured, or how test adaptations for students with special needs can affect properties of the test and test-takers’ performance.

Chemicals in products and materials provide large societal and health benefits, however some chemicals are ubiquitous in the environment and some have shown to cause adverse effects in biota including humans. Sustainable use of chemicals and efficient regulatory and policy actions requires expertise and tools for early identification of potentially hazardous chemicals. This project aims at developing tools to characterize and identify polymers as new and/or emerging risk chemicals (NERCs). Polymers are often overlooked in risk assessment of chemicals and here we will focus on fluorinated polymers that could degrade to per- and polyfluoroalkyl substances (PFAS).
