1. Fully Funded PhD Position in Theoretical Explorations on the Lattice with Orthogonal and Symplectic group (TELOS): toward the Exascale Frontier (RS826)

Summary of PhD Program:

The TELOS collaboration, co-led by researchers at Swansea University and The University of Edinburgh, and with links in other Institutions in the United Kingdom, Taiwan, Korea, Austria and Japan, plays a central role in the study of new gauge theories that have the potential to address many of the STFC challenges in Frontier Physics, such as the origin of dark matter in the universe, and the nature of electroweak symmetry breaking and mass generation in the standard model. We developed state of the art (open source) software working on GPU- and CPU-based supercomputing architectures, and secured computing resources from the UK-based as well as International supercomputing facilities.

2. Fully Funded PhD Position in AI-driven Non-destructive Testing (RS825)

Summary of PhD Program:

Are you passionate about artificial intelligence, data analytics, and cutting-edge engineering applications? Join our interdisciplinary research team and contribute to the future of Non-Destructive Testing (NDT) – a crucial technique used in industries to assess materials, components, and structures without causing damage. This PhD project focuses on advancing Ultrasound Testing and X-ray Computed Tomography (CT) – two key NDT techniques used to inspect metallic and composite materials. These methods generate large 3D datasets that can be difficult for human experts to analyze manually, increasing the risk of missed defects.

3. Fully Funded PhD Position in Biomechanics and in Data analytics applied to movement coordination in children

Summary of PhD Program:

We have 2 PhD scholarships available, linked to a Waterloo Foundation project on the development of motor skills in children – Moves-UP. The 2 PhD students will work alongside the wider Moves-UP team, including academics in the departments of Sports & Exercise Science and Biomedical Engineering at Swansea University, clinical staff within the Swansea Bay University Health Board and teachers within a local Swansea schools network. The Moves-UP project addresses physical movement difficulties in children. Specifically, Developmental Coordination Disorder (DCD), a neurodevelopmental condition which impairs motor planning and coordination, complicating the acquisition of skills such as running and balancing.

4. Fully Funded PhD Position in AI accelerated discontinuous Galerkin solver for Boltzmann-BGK equation for rarefied, hypersonic flows (RS817)

Summary of PhD Program:

This PhD project will focus on developing AI-based methods to accelerate the Swansea University in-house discontinuous Galerkin (DG) finite element solver for the Boltzmann-BGK (BBGK) equation (developed by B.J. Evans, O. Hassan and K. Morgan). This solver directly solves the Boltzmann-BGK model equation for the velocity distribution function, which is a fundamental quantity in rarefied gas dynamics and statistical physics. The BBGK equation is the governing equation for hypersonic, rarefied flow problems in aerospace and microfluidics, where the continuum and equilibrium assumptions of Navier-Stokes equation are not eligible.

5. Fully Funded PhD Position in Multi-OMICs approach to characterise an in vitro lung model as a predictive tool for human health (RS823)

Summary of PhD Program:

It is imperative to use well characterised, human-relevant in vitro models to assess air pollution exposure impact upon human health, and how it may develop disease. However, despite the known negative association of inhalation exposure to air pollution, the mechanisms of action to which air pollution impacts lung health are currently unclear. To elucidate this, using a physiologically relevant model of the lower airways, multi-omic analyses will provide a key tool to characterise mechanistic changes and assist in predicting the human health impact of the exposure to different air pollutants.

6. Fully Funded PhD Position in Optimal problems under contagious markets with regime switching and risk uncertainty

Summary of PhD Program:

In this project, different optimal control problems will be considered under a contagious financial and insurance market with regime switching and risk uncertainty. In the first chapter, an optimal portfolio choice and life consumption problem will be studied under a fragile financial market with regime switching and risk uncertainty, where the transition matrix is no longer constant but depends on historical paths of financial assets in that market.

7. Fully Funded PhD Position

Summary of PhD Program:

As a result of a change in funding allocation, we are able to offer a limited number of full-fee scholarships available specifically for those researching projects in the field of Value-Based Health and Care. The Swansea School of Management DBA is a part-time professional doctorate designed for senior managers and leaders in all sectors; private, public and not-for-profit. In this programme, learners engage in applied research, bringing established and cutting-edge theories to bear on their practical organisational issues. You will develop and enrich practice in your field, as well as contribute to our understanding of the underpinning theoretical base for the work.

8. Fully Funded PhD Position in Statistical Modelling in Multiple Long-Term Conditions for Healthcare Policy

Summary of PhD Program:

Healthcare decision-making has previously focused on developing recommendations for single conditions. However, standardised care for each chronic condition in isolation can be inappropriate for individuals living with multiple long-term conditions known as multimorbidity, and may lead to unnecessary polypharmacy. This PhD studentship aims to develop a Bayesian modelling framework to identify clusters of multiple long-term conditions resulting in increased risk of hospitalisations, polypharmacy and/or mortality using population-scale, linked, electronic health records from the Secure Anonymised Information Linkage (SAIL) Databank Wales Multimorbidity e-Cohort (Lyons et al, 2021).

9. Fully Funded PhD Position in the Psychology Pathway (RS818)

Summary of PhD Program:

This interdisciplinary project will explore how a combination of behavioural science and smart cooking technologies can encourage meal preparation outside of peak hours, reducing pressure on the grid while supporting public health and sustainability goals. By identifying behavioural barriers, testing technological solutions, and integrating policy recommendations, this research will bridge the gap between energy policies and public health priorities.

10.
Fully Funded PhD Position in Acquired Brain Injury and Legal Adjudication

Summary of PhD Program:

Acquired brain injury is significantly overrepresented in the criminal justice system, with prevalence estimates in prison populations ranging from 50% to 80% in adult populations. The needs of individuals with brain injury who come into contact with the justice system are often complex, involving significant co-occurring challenges. While research has largely focused on improving identification and support within custodial settings – such as through brain injury screening tools at prison entry – far less attention has been paid to how brain injury is perceived and considered during earlier stages of the criminal justice process, particularly the adjudication phase.

11. Fully Funded PhD Position in Tumour Growth

Summary of PhD Program:

Ovarian cancer is the deadliest of all gynaecological cancers (>2000 deaths/year, UK). It is described as a silent killer as most diagnoses occur after it has spread to the peritoneal cavity (metastasis). It is known that peritoneal cells contribute to the growth of metastatic tumours. Previously, it was demonstrated that an immune cell-produced metabolite promotes peritoneal tumour growth (https://doi.org/10.1172/jci99169). However, a host of interconnected metabolic and immune pathways likely regulate tumour progression.
