1. Fully Funded PhD Position in Improving health and wellbeing in Nottingham through improved understanding of the link between air pollution and health
Summary of PhD Program:
This PhD research project will combine air quality and health data, using Nottingham as a case study. This work has the potential to inform new approaches to air quality targets in the UK and beyond and could provide a step change in preventative advice to communities most at risk of acute air pollution-linked health conditions. Application Deadline: 8th December 2024
2. Fully Funded PhD Position in Establishing and evaluating a person-centred approach to supporting individuals living with cognitive impairments in Nottingham
Summary of PhD Program:
This project aims to support individuals living with cognitive impairments in Nottingham. Cognitive impairments can result from conditions such as traumatic brain injury, stroke, and dementia are more common in older populations. These conditions can lead to challenges with attention, memory and executive functions. 3. Fully Funded PhD Position in Scalable Virtual Power Plants: Supporting community energy systems in Nottinghamshire through innovation
Summary of PhD Program:
This project will explore how VPPs can help address these challenges by focusing on the Sustainable Hockerton initiative, Nottinghamshire’s very own pioneer in community-led renewable energy. Sustainable Hockerton and their sister organisation, the Hockerton Housing Project, already operate community-owned and operated wind turbines and solar panels (3 wind turbines and 7 solar PV, totalling over 400kW). This research will develop a scalable model for integrating these energy sources into a VPP for Hockerton and wider Nottinghamshire communities.

5. Fully Funded PhD Position in Responding to post-diagnostic support needs for late-diagnosed autistic adults in Nottingham(shire)
Summary of PhD Program:
Autism is a lifelong condition that can be missed until mid-to-late adulthood. In Nottingham and Nottinghamshire, the number of adults with a confirmed autism diagnosis is estimated to rise from 7,135 in 2022 to 10,410 by 2025 (Nottingham and Nottinghamshire Integrated Care System, 2022). These numbers may not include people who pursue a diagnosis through private sectors, which do not routinely feed their diagnoses back to general practitioners (GP; Russell et al., 2022). While a pre-diagnostic support service has been commissioned in Nottingham and Nottinghamshire, post-diagnostic support is still limited due to diagnostic assessments being the priority of local services (Nottingham and Nottinghamshire Integrated Care System, 2022).
Application Deadline: 8th December 2024
6. Fully Funded PhD Position in Eating for Health: Addressing health inequality in Nottingham through improving food and nutrition
Summary of PhD Program:
The project builds on the previous Diet in Nottingham (DiNo) research which examined the wider determinants of health and barriers to healthier lifestyles that impact and influence the development of Type 2 diabetes and obesity across Nottingham City’s diverse communities. This work found how intersecting factors at the individual, group, regional and national levels affecting people’s diets, varied amongst different communities in Nottingham. It also identified the way in which multiple organisations, including leisure centres, schools and religious institutions, are involved in shaping the food choices of different groups.

7. Fully Funded PhD Position in Developing a community-led approach to inclusive growth in Nottingham and Nottinghamshire
Summary of PhD Program:
This PhD project will examine the challenges and develop solutions for a bottom-up, community-led approach to inclusive economic growth in Nottingham and Nottinghamshire. Conventional local and regional development strategies have not considered who benefits from economic growth, who is able to access new jobs and the impact of growth on social and geographical inequalities. Inclusive growth is being explored by policymakers as an alternative model which focuses on ensuring that a growing economy also benefits marginalised local communities, and the need to create ‘good jobs’ and ‘good work’.
