1. Fully Funded PhD Position in computer science

Summary of PhD Program:

Your role in these projects will be to devise and evaluate cutting edge algorithms, implement them, evaluate them in case studies and report on the results in a well-structured manner. Additionally, depending on the project, this may also involve the design/implementation of software prototypes for simulation and proof-of-concept demonstrations (in lab settings, but also in live field trials). You will have the opportunity to interact and collaborate with researchers and engineers from other universities, research institutes and/or companies. As you will be dealing with several aspects of designing and evaluating systems (mathematical models, machine learning, optimization techniques, software development, simulation, etc.), the function is an excellent opportunity to demonstrate and further improve several of your mathematical and engineering skills.

2. Fully Funded PhD Position in Electrical Engineering

Summary of PhD Program:

The Design group of the Ghent University-imec IDLab research group is currently looking for several new PhD and post-doc researchers. The Design team is internationally recognized as a leading research group on high-speed and high-frequency integrated circuits for next-generation communications systems. At this moment, the Design group is for example active in twelve European projects, one ESA project and in direct research contracts with world-leading industry partners. These collaborations form the perfect basis for high-level and industry-relevant research in an environment with expert peers and top-notch test and measurement equipment. The main research lines focus on wired (fiber-optic, radio-over-fiber), wireless (5G, mmWave) and instrumentation for which custom CMOS or SiGe BiCMOS chips are developed and integrated in system demonstrators.

3. Fully Funded PhD Position in Economics

Summary of PhD Program:

To keep the temperature increase due to climate change well below 2°C, the transition to sustainable energy requires a significant increase in renewable electricity generation, like wind and solar. Simultaneously, a radical shift in electricity consumption is necessary, with a massive rollout of electric vehicles (EVs) to decarbonize transportation. Both transitions are challenging, as solar and wind electricity generation are variable and difficult to predict, while uncoordinated charging of EVs. will stress the electricity system. However, a silver lining exists among these challenges, namely that the greater use of EVs holds the promise of making electricity demand more flexible, as there is flexibility in when to charge EVs.

4. 02 Fully Funded PhD Position in Philosophy and Moral Sciences

Summary of PhD Program:

Loneliness, which can be defined as the negative mental states (e.g. sadness, despair) that people experience when they feel that they do not have enough relationships, or not the right kinds of relationships (de Jong-Gierveld, 1987, p. 120), is a widespread phenomenon in many societies. For example, even prior to the COVID-19 pandemic, surveys from Europe and North America reported that 20 to 35 percent of adults between the ages of 65 and 79 say that they are frequently lonely, a figure that rises to 40 to 50 percent among those aged 80 and above (Dykstra, 2009).

5. Fully Funded PhD Position in Communication Sciences

Summary of PhD Program:

Primary prevention of cancer through behavioral changes in adolescence is a huge health and societal challenge in Europe. Adolescence is a critical period in which many risk behaviors are initiated. Today’s youth is increasingly targeted with unhealthy food marketing messages that are hard to resist and which may contribute to unhealthy eating habits. This project aims to develop and test the effectiveness of two interventions (i.e., a serious game and social media influencer campaign) aimed at raising awareness on unhealthy food marketing among adolescents, increasing their resistance to this unhealthy food marketing and assisting them to make more healthy food choices.

6. Fully Funded PhD Position in Green Chemistry

Summary of PhD Program:

Tropical forests are very important within a global change context. The Congo basin is the second largest tropical forest but is compared to other tropical forests largely understudied. The ISOFYS research group installed unique research infrastructure and has a strong local network to answer pressing global change questions for the Congo basin. Among others, the infrastructure consists of an eddy covariance flux tower, soil and stem respiration chambers (CO2, N2O, CH4), cosmic ray neutron sensor, GEM plots, tree canopy sampling, etc. Doing so we operate the most unique “supersite” for global change experiments in the Congo basin. Furthermore, the ISOFYS lab at Ghent University is fully equipped for stable isotope analyses of D, 13-C, 15-N, 18-O and 34-S in various sample matrices.

7. Fully Funded PhD Position in Information Technology

Summary of PhD Program:

Although environmental noise exposure mapping has become mature since the issuing of the European Environmental Noise directive, current models and knowledge are strongly human oriented, and cannot be easily transferred to terrestrial ecosystems. In this work, a main goal is assessing the exposure due to anthropogenic noise on wildlife. Despite that the physics of sound propagation (including ground surface interactions, terrain undulations, propagation through vegetation and meteorological influences) are reasonably well understood and prediction models exist, there are two main issues. First, detailed models need detailed input data. Secondly, the computational burden is high. Both will hinder the production of anthropogenic noise maps at the European scale.

8. Fully Funded PhD Position in Building Materials

Summary of PhD Program:

DuneFront will demonstrate blue-grey coastal and marine infrastructure as a new generation of sustainable, inclusive, and aesthetic solution to ensure coastal safety under climate change. The project has the ambition to co-create hybrid Dune-Dike Nature Based Solutions (DD-hybrid NbS) that can efficiently integrate static hard infrastructure with adaptive, dynamic aeolian and vegetated sediments. Mainstreaming biodiversity into marine and coastal DD-hybrid NbS is essential to jointly safeguard human assets, blue economy activities and biodiversity gain and restoration. DuneFront will achieve this challenge by identifying key biological, physical, and socio-economic boundary conditions, and by translating evidence on biodiversity, morphodynamics and safety from 12 Demonstrators along vulnerable European coasts into new roadmaps for DD-hybrid NbS design and installation.
