1. Fully Funded PhD Position in lyase/Hydrogen Sulfide pathway in Cardiomyopathy

Summary of PhD Program:

Cardiovascular diseases have been the leading cause of mortalities worldwide. There are approximately 4 million deaths per year due to heart diseases in Europe, accounting for nearly 50% of all deaths in Europe. Despite the advancements in medical technology, the morbidity and mortality rate of heart failure remains high. Compared to the 1990s, death due to heart failure increased by 54% in 2016, posing a significant global health problem.

There are several types of cardiomyopathies, including dilated cardiomyopathy (DCM), hypertrophic cardiomyopathy (HCM), restrictive cardiomyopathy (RCM) and arrhythmogenic right ventricle cardiomyopathy (ARVC), peripartum cardiomyopathy (PPCM) and Takotsubo (stress) cardiomyopathy, with DCM and HCM being the more general forms of the disease. Compare to DCM, a subset HCM patients who progress into dilated phase of HCM (D-HCM), have higher mortality risk than those with DCM. However, the underlying pathogenic mechanisms are not fully understood.

3. Fully Funded PhD Position in Unlocking sleep patterns with advanced data-driven models

Summary of PhD Program:

This project will derive markers for sleep patterns and develop new data-driven models for investigation and classification of sleep patterns in healthy individuals and individuals with insomnia from physiological and physical activity time series data. It will advance the means for continuous monitoring of symptoms of fragmented sleep in the home environment.

4. Fully Funded PhD Position in Synthetic data generation for medical image applications

Summary of PhD Program:

To mitigate the effects of data availability/accessibility constraint on medical imaging and AI-health research, this doctoral research will examine the alternative approach of synthesising medical imaging data in specific modalities (e.g. US, MRI, PET etc.) based on a number of carefully curated visual and pathological criteria that make the generated images almost identical, both visually and qualitatively, to real images produced by standard medical imaging sensors. This doctoral research will develop a suite of image processing tools and techniques that will automate the generation of medical images in specific modalities with a particular focus on modelling the visual cues of most commonly known/widespread respiratory conditions e.g. lung cancer, COPD, pneumonia and CV-19.

5. Fully Funded PhD Position in Real 3D object teleportation for immersive XR scene rendering

Summary of PhD Program:

Teleportation anchors embed objects and/or users into a pre-determined position within a specific XR environment. These objects could be either synthetic or real, or a combination thereof and help populate the created XR environment in such a way that makes it appear natural and fully immersive with full sensorial capabilities. This project will examine the multi-sensory teleportation capabilities in XR scenes and develop a suite of techniques and tools aimed at creating, registering and rendering 3D objects (including holograms) in XR environments and will research the interaction of humans with those teleported objects using multimodal interfaces with audio-visual and haptic capabilities.

6. Fully Funded PhD Position in Knowledge-based machine learning for precision healthcare

Summary of PhD Program:

This project aims to develop a knowledge-based machine learning model by integrating physiological, or biological, behavioural-driven context, or environmental factors with machine learning. It will have the potential to analyse normal (healthy) patterns and detect deviations from such patterns. The model will be able to improve the accuracy and effectiveness of healthcare applications and enhance the patient-centred approach in healthcare.

7. Fully Funded PhD Position in High accuracy digital twins for telemedicine applications

Summary of PhD Program:

This project will explore the challenges of digital twin research within the healthcare context and develop a number of solutions aiming at generating an identical visual representation of human organs (e.g. heart, lungs etc.) with a full capture of their physiological features and high-accuracy operation. The digital twin will be supported by a constant and periodic capture of medical data about the real twin, hence enabling data analytics that will endorse the early stage diagnosis of any pathological defect and predict/prevent the future occurrence of any serious medical condition. Research will focus on the modelling and simulation aspects that consist of both the image processing part and ML-powered data analytics part of the project.

9. Fully Funded PhD Position in Digital twin for investigating diabetes

Summary of PhD Program:

This project will address a significant research gap in modelling and understanding the process of glucose production and disposal in healthy, pre-diabetic and diabetic individuals. It will develop a data-driven model for simulating glucose and insulin production in humans. The model will be used to build a digital twin simulating the glucose insulin dynamics, mimicking the physiological functions in the human body. The digital twin will have the potential to detect early warning signals for onset of pre-diabetes or type II diabetes.
