University of Cambridge, England invites online application for multiple fully funded PhD programs in various research areas. Candidates interested in fully funded PhD positions can check the details and may apply as soon as possible.
1. PhD Studentship in Systems Engineering and Machine Learning (Fixed Term)
Summary of PhD Positions:
Applications are invited for a fully funded non-clinical PhD awarded to the University of Cambridge to be led by Dr Michael Roberts at the Department of Applied Mathematics and Theoretical Physics (DAMTP) and Dr Nick Gleadall at the Department of Haematology as part of the Haematology Data Science Initiative (BloodCounts! And Haem-Match). The successful applicant will spend time at the both DAMTP and Department of Haematology at The University of Cambridge, and will be fully embedded into all teams to ensure the necessary complementary skillsets are developed during the PhD.
Application Deadlines: 12 September 2022
2. FPhD studentship – Decarbonisation of Heating
Summary of PhD Positions:
The project will explore some of the challenges associated with the decarbonisation of heating through use of a combination of approaches of energy efficiency and use of renewable heat generation systems, with particular reference to challenging buildings such as in Cambridge Colleges, and with a view to establishing some general principles through modelling and data collection and analysis. Funding will be provided to cover the student’s full fees and student maintainence. Applicants should be willing to become a member of Clare Hall in order to qualify for the funding.
Application Deadlines: 1 November 2022

3. Two PhD Studentship – Blood and Transplant Research Unit in Donor Health and Behaviour
Summary of PhD Positions:
Two 3-year studentships in the application of using internationally unique datasets to address questions of relevance to the needs of the blood service (NHS Blood and Transplant; NHSBT). Studentships are funded by the National Institute for Health and Care Research (NIHR) Blood and Transplant Research Unit (BTRU) in Donor Health and Behaviour at the University of Cambridge. Background: Donated blood is a crucial resource for healthcare systems, enabling blood transfusions that save millions of lives every year around the world. But the evidence needed to improve the safety and efficiency of blood donation is weak and underdeveloped, risking harm and waste. The BTRU conducts research to address major challenges identified by NHSBT.
Application Deadlines: 12 September 2022
4. MPhil Studentship – Seafood for societal health
Summary of PhD Positions:
For their research the student will be based in the David Attenborough Building which houses the Cambridge Conservation Initiative, bringing together the biggest NGOs in biodiversity conservation with the University of Cambridge. The student will be resident at Murray Edwards College, a College for women from a variety of backgrounds who strive to achieve their full potential and make a difference in the world. The student will be supervised by Dr David Willer, who will provide tailored support on the project and access to a network of major industrial and political stakeholders to facilitate maximum research impact.

5. H2 Combustion modelling & simulations using LES-FlaRe (2 studentships)
Summary of PhD Positions:
Two fully funded PhD studentships are available to start in Lent 2023 term with an aim to study hydrogen combustion and its stability under micro-mixing conditions relevant for gas turbine applications. This project will help to build combustors for zero-carbon fuels to address global warming and the mitigation strategies. One student will investigate flame structure and emission and the second student will study the blow-off characteristics of H2 flames in a micro-mixing burner. These activities will use large eddy simulation (LES) paradigm along with FlaRe closure for subgrid scale combustion. Hence, strong interests in numerical modelling of reacting flows, computational fluid dynamics and high-performance computing on massively parallel machines and, strong analytical skills, logical deduction and programming skills in c, c++ and Python are essential. Some background in the above areas would be preferable. There are close collaborations with Mitsubishi Heavy Industries for practical sides and University College London for experimental aspects.
Application Deadlines: 4 October 2022
6. Fully-Funded (Home Rate) PhD Studentship
Summary of PhD Positions:
Looking for a battery related career that contributes to creating a sustainable future? Keen to join a dynamic community of pioneering battery researchers seeking to find solutions to support a fully electric future? The project will involve investigation of two-dimensional metallic transition metal dichalcogenides as catalytically active cathodes for Li-S batteries. It will involve synthesis of the materials, their structural and electrochemical characterisation, and fabrication and testing of Li-S batteries. The project will also involve operando characterisation of the devices.
Application Deadlines: 30 September 2022
