1. Fully Funded PhD Position in Psychological mechanisms underlying durable behavior change

Summary of PhD Program:

Directing behavior away from attractive tempting options toward options in line with one’s goals can be accomplished by making the tempting options psychologically less attractive. Research has shown that this may be accomplished by cognitive training and learning tasks. However, such tasks do not always lead to durable changes in behavior. What is needed is a better understanding of how psychological interventions that target the subjective value of choice options can have durable effects on behavior.

2. Fully Funded PhD Position in Understanding and Responding to Aphid vectored Potato Virus Y

Summary of PhD Program:

Virus diseases of potato remain one of the largest constraints to production from both a biotic and economic perspective. While over 50 potato viruses are known, most are not significant and only 5 (PVX, PVS, PVA, PVY and PLRV) are covered by the European seed certification standards. However, the importance and relevance of these virus diseases has changed dramatically due to migration of new more virulent virus strains, changes in variety use, restrictions in insecticide use and types and potential for earlier aphid flights due to milder winters.

3. Fully Funded PhD Position in Economic feasibility of farm-level investments in mixed cropping systems

Summary of PhD Program:

We are looking for a talented aspiring researcher who is interested in exploring the economic potential of sustainable mixed cropping systems. Do you want to understand how farmers can benefit from diversifying their crops and reducing their environmental impact? If so, you might be the perfect candidate for this project.

4. Fully Funded PhD Position in Root-shoot signaling in plants

Summary of PhD Program:

SKY HIGH: A NWO-Perspectief Research Programme is an inter-disciplinary consortium of researchers and companies that investigates many aspects of vertical farming from plant physiological research to systems modelling. Within the vertical farming research teams of HPP, this project focuses on root-to-shoot signaling, specifically the effect of root penetration resistance on shoot elongation. Plants respond to mechanical perturbations by modifying their morphology, a process called thigmomorphogenesis. Thigmomorphogenesis can occur at the location of perturbation, but within minutes a sudden drop in elongation growth can also be observed far away from the perturbed area.

5. Fully Funded PhD Position in Upscaling private and collective water storage

Summary of PhD Program:

The PhD project is embedded in the NWO financed interdisciplinary “Upscaling private and collective water storage in the Netherlands (UPWAS)” project which aims to co-develop interdisciplinary insights and tools that support farmers, Waterboards, Provincial Governments and other public and private stakeholders in the process of upscaling private and collective water storage for more robust agricultural systems. In this project we will do this based on three on-the-ground case studies in which farmers, State agencies and other stakeholders collaborate and work together towards increasing local and regional water storage as a means to prepare for the future

6. Fully Funded PhD Position in River plastic transport modelling

Summary of PhD Program:

Rivers play a crucial role in the transport of land-based plastic pollution towards the ocean. However, a growing amount of observational evidence suggests that most plastics never make it into the sea. At the Hydrology and Quantitative Water Management Group (HWM) we try to quantify and understand river plastic emission, transport, and retention processes across size ranges (micro to macro) by utilizing laboratory experiments, field measurements, and numerical modelling. In the recently funded EU project Innovative Solutions for Plastic Free European Rivers (INSPIRE), we aim to develop a modelling framework to (1) set baselines for river plastic pollution across Europe, (2) identify suitable locations for interventions, and (3) assess the effect of interventions under different scenarios. The project has a main focus on the Scheldt, Po, Douro, Savinja, Rhine, and Danube rivers.

7. Fully Funded PhD Position in remote sensing for urban environments

Summary of PhD Program:

The Laboratory of Geo-information Science and Remote Sensing (GRS) at Wageningen University is looking for an aspiring PhD to investigate the impact of urban form on vegetation fragmentation, urban heat islands and population well-being. We start developing an urban standard using the rich datasets available in the Netherlands, before expanding to a global urban study.

8. Fully Funded PhD Position in Valuing animal-free testing in chemical safety assessment

Summary of PhD Program:

Despite the ethical challenges of animal testing, and the fact that animals can be poor predictors of the effects of chemicals on humans, animal-studies remain the gold standard to study the human safety of chemicals. The Dutch house of representatives (Tweede Kamer) has called on the government to set a timetable to end animal experiments for safety testing. However, a lack of acceptance of innovative animal-free assessment models for chemical safety evaluations is preventing a transition to animal-free testing. The PhD-student will critically examine the question of how to accelerate the acceptance of (data derived from) animal-free models.

9. Fully Funded PhD Position in Global groundwater sustainability and crop production

Summary of PhD Program:

As part of the GROW project team, funded by the ERC Starting Grant, you will help quantify the availability of global groundwater for sustainable use and assess whether this is sufficient to maintain current and future required crop production to support global food demands. Specifically, you will focus on the impacts of current and future climate and socio-economic development on crop water requirements and the trade-off between water usage for crop production and the environment.
