3. Fully Funded PhD Position in Nordic Linguisitics

Summary of PhD Program:

Norway has been described as a “dialect paradise”, but many of the most distinguishing features of local varieties are being lost or replaced. We often find a levelling of dialects, where both urban and standard varieties – in addition to language contact – may be catalysts for language change. Still, there are many facets of these processes that we do not fully understand, including the relationship between internal and external factors, the role of increased mobility and migration, both within and across national boundaries, and to what degree local, regional, and even international identities affect the scope, trajectory, speed of language change.

The EU Court of Human rights have recently strongly criticised Norwegian child welfare services for their management of reunification processes of children with their biological families after children have been taken into care. There is a need for social innovation in the reunification field in child and family welfare services to respond to this critique. 7. Fully Funded PhD Position in Multilingualism

Summary of PhD Program:

The research topic for this PhD fellowship is multilingualism. The fellowship focuses on heritage language speakers in Norway (and beyond), i.e., individuals speaking a minoritized language and the societal majority language (Norwegian) who also learn English (and further languages) in an educational setting. Heritage language multilinguals are an understudied subgroup of multilinguals. To date, the continued development of the heritage language in children and adults is under-investigated, especially in combination with the development of the same individual’s second and third languages. Heritage speakers find themselves in a context where another language, the societal majority language, differs from their heritage/first/family language yet is the language in which they are educated and often become increasingly dominant over time.

8. Fully Funded PhD Position in Pscyhology

Summary of PhD Program:

Conventional magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) systems (e.g., 1.5 Tesla and above) operate with high-strength magnetic fields, which are expensive and require strict, access-controlled environments and maintenance, as well as highly trained personnel. As a consequence, access to high-field MRI scanners is highly limited in low- and middle-income countries (LMICs). To address this, a new generation of portable low-field MRI scanners have emerged, allowing for safe and mobile scanning at a much lower cost point, allowing for much broader usage – including rural LMIC settings. This project is making use of data actively acquired across a multitude of high income- and LMIC cohorts around the world, combining novel ultra-low field and conventional high-field MRI as well as a range neurocognitive and environmental assessments.
