Candidates interested in fully funded PhD positions can check the details and may apply as soon as possible. Interested and eligible applicants may submit their online application for PhD programs via the University’s Online Application Portal.

1. Fully Funded PhD Position in aquatic ecology

Summary of PhD Program:

This research project is carried out within the ECOSPHERE group of the University of Antwerp. The research of ECOSPHERE concentrates on the ecology of aquatic ecosystems and wetlands and the processes in the land-water interaction along the whole river continuum and the river-coastal sea interaction. The studied systems vary from small streams with riparian margins over larger rivers and floodplains to estuaries, from the scale of a single molecule to an entire ecosystem. These studies, both descriptive and experimental in nature, are integrated to predict the impact of different management options on the functioning and the biodiversity of the system.

Application Deadline: 31 January 2024

2. Fully Funded PhD Position in differential geometry and geometric mechanics

Summary of PhD Program:

You will work actively on the preparation and defence of a PhD thesis at the intersection of differential geometry and geometric mechanics, supervised by the Prof Tom Mestdag. This PhD position is funded by the research project “The differential geometry of nonholonomic mechanical systems” which aims at the study of the almost-symplectic geometry behind Lagrangian systems that are subjected to velocity-dependent (but non-integrable) constraints. The motion of a ball that rolls without slipping, or that of a skater are examples of such systems. The project combines elements of global analysis, differential geometry, dynamical systems and classical mechanics.

3. Fully Funded PhD Position in Hyperspectral Image Analysis

Summary of PhD Program:

Hyperspectral imaging reveals material properties that are not visible to the human eye. Different from laboratory-based analytical methods (X-ray diffraction, electron microscopy, etc…), it is a spatially resolved, fast, easy, non-destructive technique with great potential for in situ monitoring and quality control purposes. The PhD will develop hyperspectral data analysis techniques for quantitative estimation of material properties, which are based on physical modelling, geometric principles, and artificial intelligence. The developed methods will be validated for a variety of applications, ranging from industrial quality control to applications in ecology, forensics, and cultural heritage.

Application Deadline: 14 December 2023
