1. Fully Funded PhD Position in Mechanical and Aerospace Engineering

Summary of PhD Program:

The introduction of electrified powertrains in the bus sector has raised new challenges in achieving step changes in vehicle lightweighting. Vehicle weight has a significant impact on the energy efficiency and passenger carrying capacity of the bus vehicle, and therefore ensuring the structural weight is minimised without compromising safety is a key objective. This PhD will explore new FE based optimisation workflows that can enable the rapid design of large-scale lightweight vehicle structures. Such workflows are required to enable structural design to meet a diverse range of constraints, including strength, stiffness, durability, mass, passenger / systems packaging, manufacturability and commonality constraints. Although numerical optimisation is an integral part of the design process of single design large volume structural solutions, bespoke operator requirements with smaller production runs have to date made full numerical optimisation inappropriate for a range of vehicle structures.

2. Fully Funded PhD Position in Mechanical and Aerospace Engineering

Summary of PhD Program:

Standard solutions exist for Industry 4.0 compliant systems in production planning however, their introduction and efficient application require significant customisation to align with systems and practices that represent years of development within companies which are core to their operations. This project seeks to fill a gap in digital technologies and applications for the understanding and management of production systems in the manufacturing sector. The aim is to develop a digital operations strategy for the manufacture of materials handling equipment spanning commercial off the shelf COTS solutions and current best practice in the sector.

4. Fully Funded PhD Position in Mechanical and Aerospace Engineering

Summary of PhD Program:

Redox flow batteries (RFBs) are a promising technology for stationary energy storage systems, particularly for intermittent renewable energy sources. It is critical to the growth of RFBs as a viable technology that development focuses on low-cost and more sustainable electrolytes based on cheaper, earth-abundant redox materials. One of the most important key components of a redox flow battery (RFB) is the electrode. The role of the electrodes is to ensure efficient electron charge transfer and to facilitate the reactions of the electrolyte redox couple on their surface. This requires, amongst others, large contact areas between the electrode and the electrolyte and electrocatalytic activation of the electrode to maximise power density for practical applications.

6. Fully Funded PhD Position in Engineering

Summary of PhD Program:

This PhD project aims to investigate and improve the electrode/electrolyte interface. The application of post-treatments of the carbon felts, using oxidative activation combined with surface-decoration with nano-electrocatalysts, is expected to yield significant improvements in the electrochemical reversibility and to lower activation overpotential, resulting in higher battery efficiency. The project aims to focus particularly on iron and vanadium-based electrolytes consisting of metal complexes with ligand systems that have so far not been investigated in terms of their electrode / electrolyte interactions. These chemically activated electrodes will be investigated using various in-situ, ex-situ and operando spectroscopic techniques (Raman, FTIR, XPS, EPR) to provide insight into the underlying activation mechanisms.

7. Fully Funded PhD Position in Physics

Summary of PhD Program:

The PhD project centres on both experimental investigations and theoretical studies related to collective quantum phenomena and cooperative interactions among quantum emitters that share a common mode within various nanophotonic waveguide configurations. In one-dimensional settings, confined optical modes lead to the accumulation of directional correlations, resulting in the spontaneous breaking of mirror symmetry and the emergence of chirality. The primary goal is to achieve coherent coupling among multiple emitters embedded within these waveguides. The research covers both fundamental exploration and practical applications in the field of collective and chiral quantum optics.

8. Fully Funded PhD Position in Languages

Summary of PhD Program:

Comprehensive overviews of women’s theatre-making in Northern Ireland are offered by Imelda Foley’s The Girls in the Big Picture: Gender in Contemporary Ulster Theatre (Belfast: The Blackstaff Press, 2003) and Fiona Coffey’s Women in Northern Irish Theatre, 192102012 (New York: Syracuse Press, 2016). In addition, Lisa Fitzpatrick’s scholarship is an important contribution to this field through it’s address of theatrical explorations of gender and violence in Northern Ireland. This project will build on that important body of research to further illuminate the threads and connections between different generations of women theatre-makers.

9. Fully Funded PhD Position in Languages

Summary of PhD Program:

This PhD project takes Charabanc’s legacy as a starting point for an examination of the diverse strands of creative practice that women are engaged in, including devising, community theatre-making, directing, popular performance and playwriting. Through its address of women’s theatre from the 1990s, the project will consider developments in theatre making against a background of change in Northern Ireland as it transitions into a post-conflict society, as well as the emergence of various feminisms in this period. In light of this altered landscape, a new evaluation of contemporary women’s theatre-making through the lens of Charabanc’s influence is necessary and timely.
