Are you holding Master’s degree and looking for fully funded PhD positions? Lund University, Sweden invites online application for multiple funded PhD Programs / fully funded PhD positions in various research areas.

Candidates interested in fully funded PhD positions can check the details and may apply as soon as possible. Interested and eligible applicants may submit their online application for PhD programs via the University’s Online Application Portal.

1. Fully Funded PhD Position in Statistics

Summary of PhD Program:

Doctoral students devote their time primarily to completion of course work and the writing of a doctoral thesis. The employment as a PhD student is granted on a yearly basis and the total period of employment may not exceed 4 years of full-time studies. Departmental duties, i.e., teaching, administration or research not directly connected to the dissertation topic, may amount to a maximum of 20% of full time. When such departmental duties are performed, the length of employment is extended accordingly. The primary focus of this project involves both theoretical and applied work in optimal design (design of experiments) and Gaussian processes, with a specific application in epidemiology. The lead investigator for this project is Associate Professor Jonas Wallin.

2. Fully Funded PhD Position in Human Ecology

Summary of PhD Program:

The holder of a doctoral position is expected to participate actively in the research and teaching environment of the department and may have to perform departmental duties, above all teaching, amounting to about 20 percent of full time. This call recognises that the world is going through a crisis of unprecedented global scale engendered by a dominant regime that has resulted in deepening inequalities, increasing deprivation in old and new forms, the destruction of ecosystems, catastrophic climate change, ruptures in socio-cultural fabrics, and the violent dispossession of living beings.

3. Fully Funded PhD Position in Physics within Microwave Quantum Optics and Detectors

Summary of PhD Program:

This specific position focuses on performing quantum optics experiments and aims to build photodetectors for microwave photons and gain access to the statistical properties of the photons. The microwave photons mediate coherent interactions as well as form the readout method for the main solid-state approaches to quantum technology ranging from superconducting qubits to spin qubits. As a PhD student in this position, you will get hands-on experience in quantum device fabrication in Lund Nano Lab, perform measurements on them and develop physics understanding of their operation. You will work as an important member of our research team in collaboration with other research groups in Lund and other high-ranking international universities. The work provides a good mix of fundamental physics concepts and technology-oriented mindset to build new sensors.

4. Fully Funded PhD Position in Chemical Engineering on membrane processes for sugar applications

Summary of PhD Program:

The project is to be carried out in close cooperation with industry and aims to reduce the lime usage in beet raw juice purification by developing a process for the clarification of raw beet juice using ultrafiltration as a key separation unit. The ultrafiltration process will first be optimized on lab-scale with regards to membranes and process conditions including cleaning and pre-treatment. Potential post-treatment processes to improve sugar concentration and purification on lab-scale will also be investigated. The optimized process is then to be scaled-up to industrial pilot scale based on which an economical evaluation and life cycle assessment will be carried out for the full-scale process.

5. Fully Funded PhD Position in Physics within the discipline of characterisation of artificial protein motors

Summary of PhD Program:

The goal of the project is to characterize artificial protein motors on single molecule level. Sup-projects are (i) to develop fluorescence-based methods to detect single steps of a motor at nanometer scale, (ii) use this to optimize and characterize the motor as it walks along a defined DNA track. The motor molecules will be provided by the collaboration partners. Methods can comprise bioanalytical and biochemical methods, fluorescence microscopy, TIRF, microfluidics, surface modification, nanofabrication as well as image analysis.

6. Fully Funded PhD Position in Industrial Electrical Engineering with focus on charging infrastructure at freight terminals and construction sites

Summary of PhD Program:

The aim of the project is to create conditions for an efficient electrification of vehicles at large facilities with construction machines and heavy transports. The challenge is generic in that the facility is assumed to be characterized by I) a weak connection to an external power grid compared to the charging need, II) a large and over time varying charging need, III) access to local generation of electrical energy (e.g. solar, wind), IV) access to local storage of electrical energy (e.g. batteries) and V) a need for robustness in the event of failure of the external power grid. The generic challenge is modelled, simulated and optimized for two actors involved in the project; a large site (e.g. a road construction with 10-50 work machines, 30-400 trucks in/out per day) and a freight terminal (>100 cars with fully electrified local, regional and linehaul transports).

7. Fully Funded PhD Position in Physics with optical diagnostics of CO2 and nitrogen cycles

Summary of PhD Program:

The project focuses on developing a process for handling CO2 and nitrogen using renewable biomass as raw material. The process includes pyrolysis of biomass, a new combustion concept (so-called MILD combustion), and reforming added CO2 to generate syngas as fuel. The pyrolysis of biomass also generates biochar, a porous material that can absorb nitrogen, which can then be returned to the soil. The tasks consist of experimental studies of pyrolysis, the combustion process, and biochar. We are therefore looking for someone who has a genuine interest in developing and applying advanced optical and laser-based measurement methods to contribute to solving global problems in the areas of environment, energy, and climate.

8. Fully Funded PhD Position in Mathematics with a focus on Computer Vision

Summary of PhD Program:

This project concerns 3D mapping methods which are used to enable re-localization and navigation in large-scale environments. We will focus on sparse reconstruction methods which takes as input is a set of images and produces a sparse map, typically consisting of a 3D point cloud. In the scope of the project, we will extend these methods to also integrate higher-level scene primitives into the reconstruction. The target applications are in Structure-from-Motion (SfM), Simultaneous Localization and Mapping (SLAM) and visual localization. The thesis work will include the development of new methods, planning and execution of experiments, data collection, programming and implementation, writing scientific articles, and presenting the results at international conferences.

9. Fully Funded PhD Position in Molecular Cardiology

Summary of PhD Program:

The work will be conducted within the PhD project “Studies of the molecular spring Titin for improved understanding, treatment and diagnosis of the failing heart” and includes reading relevant literature; planning, conducting, and analysing experiments; collection and analysis of clinical samples and some bioinformatic analyses. The purpose of the project is to study regulatory mechanisms for splicing of the sarcomere protein Titin in clinical samples as well as in cell and animal models of heart disease. Results of the project are expected to form the basis of a doctoral thesis.
