Karolinska Institute, Sweden invites online application for multiple fully funded PhD Programs in various research areas. Candidates interested in fully funded PhD positions can check the details and may apply as soon as possible.

1. PhD Programs in Social protection policies for health

Summary of PhD Positions:

The PhD position advertised is on social protection policies for health. The goal of the project is to understand the needs and challenges to expand social protection to people with tuberculosis in low-and middle-income countries. Tuberculosis is chosen as a tracer condition, as it has clear links to poverty. Evidence suggests that the improvement of living conditions, and reduction of poverty, can have an important effect on reducing tuberculosis incidence and that social protection can improve health care access.

The project is a mixed methods project, housed across two funded projects in Mozambique, Kenya and Tanzania. The position will involve close working with these international teams, both online and in person. The research will involve collecting and analysing data, and interviewing people from policymakers to individuals.

2. PhD Programs in neuroscience

Summary of PhD Positions:

The project regards the mechanisms by which the PFC controls behavior, with a specific focus on how the PFC shapes activities in the striatum. Neurons in cortex extensively target the striatum and the corticostriatal pathways are proposed to regulate the evaluation and selection of actions. Experiments in rodents have given direct evidence that acquisition of goal-direct actions require intact connectivity from the PFC to the dorsomedial striatum. However, the PFC-striatal pathway is poorly understood.

A comprehensive understanding of the characteristics of prefrontal projection neurons targeting the striatum is lacking, including their molecular traits, spatial and laminar residency, global projection patterns, and their targeting of different striatal neurons and compartmentalisations. Furthermore, understanding of how the PFC-striatal pathway functionally shape behavior is lacking.

The doctoral project addresses outstanding questions regarding PFC-striatal pathway as outlined above. For this, the hired student will conduct advanced circuit tracing, and registration (Neuropixels recordings and/or 2- photon imaging) of neuronal activity in behaving mice. Optogenetics will be used for elucidation of the function of specific neuronal populations.

3. PhD Programs in Precision Psychiatry

Summary of PhD Positions:

The main scientific objective of your PhD project is to advance our knowledge in suicide prediction. Suicide is a catastrophic event for both the individual, close relatives, colleagues, and society. Your project is focused on statistical modelling in two different studies. In both studies you will collaborate with colleagues at Oxford University (UK), University of North Carolina Chapel Hill (US) and Sweden.

Research project 1 is a registry study of risk factors for suicide among psychiatric patients that have experienced compulsive mental care. Temporal trends in the risk of suicide and also stratified risks by gender and age will be studied. Forty years of nationwide registry data with over 100,000 recorded compulsory care episodes defines the cohort to be studied. The work involves application of your expertise in quantitative modelling to estimate absolute and relative risk of suicide. Your role also involves the production of scientific articles. There is also ample possibility to construct instruments that predict risk based on the risk factors that we will discover, and possibilities to apply more advanced modelling appropriate for large-scale observational data.

In Research project 2 you will be working with multimodal data (including genetic data) in a nationwide suicide cohort with the purpose of improving present prediction of suicide aiming to derive and validate better risk models for suicide in the total population. This project will also include exploring genetic and environmental risk factors.

5. PhD Programs in molecular psychiatry

Summary of PhD Positions:

To complete a doctoral education means to devote oneself to a research project under supervision of an experienced researcher and to follow an individual study plan. The doctoral student will also take courses and write a thesis. After completing their doctoral education at KI, students are to have developed an advanced general knowledge of medical science, scientific methodology, and cutting-edge scientific skills. For this project the student will, using transcriptomic and image/ electrophysiological-based methods to study changes in the synaptic organization of the brain in schizophrenia using both mouse models and human tissue/cells.

6. PhD Programs in Computational Genetics of Multiple Sclerosis

Summary of PhD Positions:

Rheumatoid arthritis (RA) is a lifelong autoimmune inflammatory disease, characterized with persistent synovitis, systemic inflammations, and autoantibodies. The disease strikes predominantly women, affecting small joints of hands and feet, leading to a high proportion of work disability. The overall aim of this PhD project is to provide novel insights into the risk factors, gene-environment interactions, and comorbid conditions of RA, leveraging large-scale genetic information and environmental data. The ultimate goal is to understand disease aetiology and to inform preventive strategy.

This PhD project consists of five sub-projects, first a systemic review and meta-analysis to comprehensively summarize the roles of airborne occupational exposures in RA development; followed by a population-based case-control study comprising both European and Asian individuals to understand airborne occupational exposures, genetic predispositions, and their interactions in RA onset.

Next, a project looking into the roles of stress at work and in life, as well as social support in RA development. Furthermore, an outcome-wide Mendelian randomization to explore the putative causal association of RA with its subsequent health outcomes; and finally a cross-phenotype design to understand shared and distinct risk factors between RA and other autoimmune disorders such as MS.

8. PhD Programs in the project Epigenetic regulation of acute leukemia

Summary of PhD Positions:

The epigenetic machinery is often perturbed in acute leukemia and contributes to leukomogenesis via different mechanisms. Increased knowledge about the aberrant epigenetic machinery will help us to better understand the mechanisms that give rise to leukemia. Our common research will potentially provide tools for novel therapies. This collaborative project offers you a unique possibility to analyze patient samples using novel state of the art methodologies. You will bridge the clinical and preclinical research. The projects includes both experimental and bioinformatic analysis. In addition to the project work, the PhD student will also participate in several courses and get the possibility to present the projects at international conferences.
