1. Fully Funded PhD Position in Experimental and Behavioural Research

Summary of PhD Program:

Our goal is to incorporate intelligent technologies in the design of policies informing average citizens about critical behaviors related to health, saving, or education. We combine narrative information with intelligent technologies to develop effective video interventions for heterogeneous populations. There have been significant advances in computational social science that provide the tools for optimizing the design of digital content and the development of information interventions. Important elements of the project include automating the conversations with subjects who participate in these experiments; programming ChatBots to facilitate these conversations; generating large corpuses of text and voice data; LLM; machine learning data analytics; and machine-enhanced design of video treatments.

5. Fully Funded PhD Position in isotope geochemistry and crustal evolution

Summary of PhD Program:

As part of the SNSF funded Ambizione project “A novel perspective on the composition and evolution of the early continental crust from combined Lu-Hf and Sr isotopes in apatite” we are looking for a PhD student to investigate the evolution of the early continental crust through the lens of isotope geochemistry.

6. Fully Funded PhD Position in biology & Nutrition

Summary of PhD Program:

In the proposed project, the student will study nutritional, metabolic and epigenetic requirements in the formation of engineered human osteogenic tissues and in bones. They will apply RNAseq, gene editing and advanced imaging techniques to investigate specific pathways that impact the tissue formation. They will design novel approaches that target metabolic pathways in the bone stem cell niche to promote tissue repair. This project will build on our recent progress in this area (Okuchi et al Nature Materials 2021, Habib SJ et al Trends in Cell Biology 2022).

Application Deadline: 31.12.2023

7. Fully Funded PhD Position in Rhizosphere Biogeochemistry of Coastal Wetlands

Summary of PhD Program:

The candidates will join the strong and growing Soil Biogeochemistry group studying the interactions of minerals, microbes, and organic matter in the face of climate change. The successful candidate will perform research on rhizophere biogeochemistry within salt marsh soils threatened by sea level rise. Specifically, this project aims to determine how oscillatory drivers (tidal oscillations and diel cycles) influence carbon processing and storage in the rhizosphere of salt marsh wetlands. A particular focus is the investigation of mineral and redox constraints on microbial carbon metabolism in the rhizosphere. This work will include growth chamber- and field-based experiments. The candidate will learn cutting-edge chemical and biological analyses, including microsensor, metabolomics, and spectroscopic approaches. Results from this project will advance our understanding of carbon storage within coastal march ecosystems and inform predictions of the vulnerability of this vast carbon reservoir to sea level rise.

8. Fully Funded PhD Position in Computational Biology

Summary of PhD Program:

The group is investigating the conserved protein machinery involved in the fusion of transport vesicles in eukaryotic cells, in particular the proteins driving the release of neurotransmitters from synaptic vesicles. To come to a better understanding, we focus on a detailed biochemical and structural characterization of the underlying protein-protein interactions. In addition, we use various computational methods to establish a detailed evolutionary description of the vesicle fusion machinery
