1. Fully Funded PhD Position in Natural Science

Summary of PhD Program:

The main task is to conduct the PhD thesis work under supervision, which includes development of the PhD student’s methodological experience, analytical skills, as well as theoretical depth and breadth. Techniques used within the project include Bayesian statistical analysis, phylogenomics, and population genetics. The work will be conducted as field, laboratory, and computational studies. Shorter periods may also be spent as field work in French Polynesia, Cook Islands, Hawaii (USA), Aotearoa (NZ) or another country. In addition to working in Gothenburg and in the field, time may also be spent working in the group of Matiu Prebble (University of Canterbury, Ōtautahi/Christchurch, New Zealand).

2. Fully Funded PhD Position in Theoretical Philosophy

Summary of PhD Program:

Theoretical Philosophy examines the nature of mind and (external) reality, our scientific and everyday knowledge of that reality, as well as different ways of representing, and reasoning with, that knowledge in language and thought. Research within Theoretical Philosophy at the University of Gothenburg covers more or less all of these areas. For more information about our subject, supervisor-capacities, etc.. Please note that the research done at this Department is in analytical philosophy.

4. Fully Funded PhD Position in Medical Science

Summary of PhD Program:

More than one million people die of infections with antibiotic resistant bacteria each year. Increasing antibiotic resistance jeopardizes modern health care as we know it. Wastewaters from households and hospitals provide environments where antibiotics, pathogens and environmental bacteria meet, with apparent risks that novel resistance genes are transferred to pathogens under a selection pressure from antibiotics. The overarching purpose of this PhD project is to better understand the role wastewaters in the mobilization and subsequent transfer of novel antibiotic resistance genes to pathogens. Such fundamental knowledge is critical to allow evidence-based decisions where and to what extent measures are needed with the intent to delay resistance evolution. Bacterial growth curves will be analyzed by Machine learning will help identifying which antibiotics that are selective in different wastewaters.

5. Fully Funded PhD Position in Environmental Science

Summary of PhD Program:

The main task is to conduct the PhD thesis work under supervision, which includes development of the PhD student’s methodological experience, analytical skills, as well as theoretical depth and breadth. Techniques used within the project include for example molecular techniques, microscopy, image analysis and field sampling. The studies will be conducted as both laboratory experiments at Natrium in Gothenburg, and at Kristineberg which allows for larger system to be used. As we have national and international partners, the project can also include guest visits and studies abroad.

6. Fully Funded PhD Position in Medical Science

Summary of PhD Program:

Primary and secondary tauopathies comprise some of the most common neurodegenerative disorders, such as Frontotemporal lobar degeneration and Alzheimer’s disease (AD), respectively. Currently, the definitive diagnosis is based on post-mortem brain staining of tau tangles to provide a confirmatory diagnosis, since they have several overlapping symptoms making them challenging to distinguish. Biomarkers that are measurable in vivo are essential to provide clinicians with information regarding the type of disease and stage its progression. In AD much progress has been made to achieve this for the amyloid component of AD, yet fluid biomarkers for tau pathology remain a challenge.

7. Fully Funded PhD Position in Atmospheric Science

Summary of PhD Program:

The project’s central focus will be experimental work exploring surface chemistry using state-of-the-art synchrotron-based techniques and additionally a custom-built environmental molecular beam (EMB) instrument. You will travel to synchrotrons (e.g., Sweden, Switzerland, Japan, France) and conduct beamtime with coworkers at synchrotron facilities, as well involved in the EMB lab at GU. At MAX IV, you will be involved in designing, developing and testing a new cyro- sample holder, which will be used in future experiments. Atmospheric simulating chamber experiments will also take place, for which you will travel to such chambers with coworkers and carry out experiments. The topics will be related to atmospheric science, thus it is expected that the candidate has experience of chemistry and atmospheric science.

8. Fully Funded PhD Position in Medicinal Chemistry

Summary of PhD Program:

The focus of the Grøtli lab is the use of synthetic organic chemistry to produce novel compounds for the study of problems important in cell biology and medicine. Such compounds are interesting both as potential therapeutics and as experimental tools for understanding the physiological roles of the target proteins. Chemical modification of proteins provides powerful tools for functional studies of individual proteins in complex biological systems. However, modification of native proteins in test tubes and biological contexts by site-specific and target-selective approaches remains challenging.
