2. Fully Funded PhD Position in Stone age heritage as shared landscapes

Summary of PhD Program:

The Doctoral Network ArCHe (https://www.arche.uio.no/) will train 10 PhD fellows for increasing the scientific and public value of Europe’s archaeological coastal heritage, focusing on the legacy of Stone Age hunter-fisher-gatherers (c. 12,000–2000 calBC). Including some of the earliest remains of human activity, this fragile and very heterogeneous legacy is crucial for understanding human engagement with the coast. Today, it is embedded in a variety of geographic settings across Europe, differing in environmental development, which face massive environmental and human threats, and is approached in various ways in cultural heritage management. ArCHe addresses the challenges of this fractured field with an innovative past–present–future approach focused on connecting the legacy from the past, its present status as archaeological heritage and prospects for its future protection and integration into lived landscapes.

4. Fully Funded PhD Position in Natural Sciences, specializing in Physical Geography

Summary of PhD Program:

This PhD project aims to determine the utility of newly available hyperspectral satellite data to better understand and quantify biochemical and biophysical properties of tundra vegetation negatively impacted by changing climatic conditions. The study areas will be located in the Swedish tundra area. Research questions to be addressed are, for example, can biochemical and biophysical properties of tundra vegetation associated with a drier and warmer climate be detected using hyperspectral satellite data? Can hyperspectral satellite data be used to detect tundra plant diversity? Is there a benefit to synergistic use of hyperspectral data from, for example, the EnMAP satellite together with Sentinel-2 data?

6. Fully Funded PhD Position in Medical Science – Data-driven life science (DDLS)

Summary of PhD Program:

Stroke is a leading cause of death and disability worldwide. Ischemic stroke is heterogeneous both in terms of etiology and outcomes. Recurrent strokes are common and have higher fatality and disability rates compared to first strokes. Thus, improved secondary prevention is greatly needed. However, many of the molecular mechanisms underlying stroke recurrence and poor outcomes remain unknown. The overarching aim of this Data Driven Life Science PhD project is to use artificial intelligence (AI) approaches, specifically deep and machine learning (ML), to improve mechanistic understanding and enhance prediction of ischemic stroke outcomes. In the long run, this project will contribute to the development of precision medicine for stroke.

7. Fully Funded PhD Position in Medical Science – Regional differences in gestational duration

Summary of PhD Program:

The purpose of the project is to deepen knowledge about geographical differences regarding pregnancy length and investigate its causes. Data will primarily come from the Medical Birth Register, relevant quality registers, and SCB’s population register. By using machine learning and spatial analysis methods, we will investigate the effect of various sociodemographic and contextual risk factors; both individually and in different combinations. Furthermore, it will be investigated how these factors affect pregnancy length in different parts of the country. This is to understand causal relationships and develop possible interventions. By evaluating the generalizability of the results outside Sweden, the project can also contribute to a global reduction of premature births and thus promote equality in maternal and child health.

8. Fully Funded PhD Position in Biochemistry – water channels in fish

Summary of PhD Program:

In the cellular membranes of all living species, proteins are embedded to handle the exchange of water between the cell and its surrounding. Those proteins are called aquaporins and they are essential for the regulation of cellular volume and osmotic homeostasis. Aquaporins located in the epithelia, the cell layer that defines the border between the interior and the exterior of an organism, also has a more overall function in the regulation of the osmotic homeostasis in the whole animal as well as in different organs. One example are the aquaporins located in the intestine of fish living in salt water where these water channels enable movement of water from the intestine to the blood. Aquaporins are also important in the fish sperm which are exposed to major differences in osmotic pressure in fresh as well as salt water and the aquaporins are therefore essential for the regulation of the cell volume in the sperm.
