2. Fully Funded PhD Position in Odontological Science – Odontology

Summary of PhD Program:

The overall purpose of the project is to identify human and microbiota genetic and biological predictors for oral health and caries using orthodontic treatment with multibracket as a human experimental model for rapid caries development. We have recently resolved dental caries by genetic means into three major subtypes. The lifestyle caries subtype, which match individuals with low-to-moderate caries or risk and respond to standard prevention based on oral hygiene and diet (90 %). The PRH1, PRH2 immunodeficiency subtype of caries that misbehave in pattern recognition and control of the normal streptococcal flora and the Streptococcus mutans high virulence subtype of caries. The immunodeficiency and S. mutans virulence subtypes of caries match the individuals with recurrent caries that cannot be controlled by standard prevention (10 %).

3. Fully Funded PhD Position in Biophysics

Summary of PhD Program:

We are looking for a talented and motivated PhD student who will be working on the interphase of molecular biology, optical biophysics, and artificial intelligence. The main goal is to quantify the effect of cellular heterogeneity on protein aggregation using AI tools for image analysis of super-resolution fluorescence imaging data.

The candidate is expected to be able to plan, prepare and implement biological experiments, single-molecule fluorescence microscopy assays as well as write codes for image analysis. Other working tasks include presentations at scientific meetings and publication of the results, scientific collaboration within and outside the group.

4. Fully Funded PhD Position in cellular and structural biology

Summary of PhD Program:

We utilize sperm tails to understand ciliary structure and function. The project will contain a lot of different light and electron microscopic imaging methods. We will also use biochemistry, such as protein purification followed by imaging of the purified proteins with cryo-electron microscopy. Images and tomograms will be treated digitally (e.g. to build 3D models of flagella and macromolecular complexes within them. This process/analysis will constitute a large part of the job assignments. The PhD student should also read and write scientific publications and present research results at national and international conferences and seminar series. PhD students are an important part of the department’s teaching team and 10-20% teaching is the norm.

5. Fully Funded PhD Position in Occupational exposure to metals from Li-batteries

Summary of PhD Program:

Electrification of the vehicle fleet is a key factor to reduce our dependency on fossil fuels and achieve climate goals. This has led to several facilities for production and recycling of lithium-ion batteries (LiB) being established across Sweden, Europe, and the world. LiB manufacturing involves the use of several metals known to cause adverse health effects. Manufacturing and recycling of LiB involves new techniques and materials but studies on occupational exposures in these workplaces and potential health effects are lacking. This PhD project aims at increasing the knowledge on metal exposure in these new occupational settings and to investigate potential health effects among workers. This project aims also at proposing appropriate occupational health surveillance and guideline values for biomonitoring. Altogether, this project will contribute with knowledge that will ensure and promote a sustainable working environment for workers involved in the production and recycling of LiB.

6. Fully Funded PhD Position in Analytical Chemistry/Neurochemistry

Summary of PhD Program:

Current efforts of dealing with Alzheimer’s disease (AD) pose an immense societal challenge, particularly as there are still no curative treatments as the pathogenic mechanisms of AD are not understood. The major hallmark of AD is the progressive accumulation of Aβ and hyperphosphorylated-tau protein, into intra- and extracellular deposits. Although Aβ has been suggested to be a critical inducer of seeding neurotoxic plaque and tangle pathology, the exact mechanisms underlying Aβ plaque pathology remain elusive. The aim of this PhD project is to develop and apply novel chemical imaging methods based on mass spectrometry imaging (MSI) to study biochemical changes in brain tissue in both genetic mouse models of AD as well as in Alzheimer patients. Here, the project mainly involves MSI method development for advanced spatial metabolomics, lipidomics and peptide imaging at the single cell level.

Summary of PhD Program:

The candidate will use bioinformatics based methods to analyse existing affinity proteomics datasets. Plasma proteins that are elevated in ageing and in various cardiovascular disease states will be identified and produced recombinantly for further study. The functional role of such proteins in endothelial cells will be investigated using in vitro cell based models, which will be used to observe effects on processes such as the recruitment of leukocytes from flowing whole blood. Nanoscale cell-based morphology assays will be used to study protein candidate-induced morphological/topological changes in endothelial cell structural.

Summary of PhD Program:

This doctoral position is 1 of 10 doctoral positions offered within the he HORIZON Marie Sklodowska-Curie Action (MSCA) Doctoral Network Pharm-ERA (https://pharm-era.hub.inrae.fr) “Improving monitoring and Environmental Risk Assessment of PHARMaceuticals, antimicrobial resistance and pathogens from terrestrial to aquatic environments”. Antibiotics and Antimicrobial Resistance (AMR) pollution in urban rivers receiving WWTP effluents is common, but their fate, and environmental risk remains poorly studied in river sediment. Context-dependency (ecological abiotic and biotic factors) influences the assembly of natural communities of bacteria and may affect their sensitivity to antibiotics and AMR. This PhD project will provide new knowledge on the interactions between pollutants (residues of antibiotics and AMR) and sediment bacteria, under altered abiotic and biotic contexts: a gradient of microbial diversity, pre-exposure history and/or pollution levels.
