1. Fully Funded PhD Position in Contested frontiers of settler states

Summary of PhD Program:

There are vacancies for two PhD positions at the Department of Comparative Politics. Each position is for a fixed-term period of 4 years. Of that period, at least 75% will be devoted to PhD training and research as an integral member of the exciting ERC project “Contested Frontiers: Understanding the constitutional politics of settler-state peripheries” (ConFront). The other 25% may involve teaching, supervision, and administrative tasks at the department.

The project combines political theory, constitutional law, and comparative politics to understand efforts – usually by Indigenous peoples versus settlers/states – to (re)constitute frontier jurisdictions, especially in the North American Arctic, Fennoscandic north, U.S. Pacific, and Australian tropics. ConFront consists of five team members led by the department’s associate professor of Arctic governance, Aaron Spitzer.

2. Fully Funded PhD Position in space physics and atmospheric dynamics

Summary of PhD Program:

The candidate will work in the research group in space physics focusing on particle precipitation. The group explores how energetic particle precipitation can affect the chemistry and dynamics of the neutral atmosphere in the polar region. Energetic electrons and protons, trapped in the Earth’s magnetic field, can collide with gases in the atmosphere. These collisions initiate several chemical reactions leading to the production of NOx and HOx gases, which in turn can reduce the ozone concentration. Ozone is important in the energy budget at these altitudes. Hence changing the concentration of ozone at 50 km affects temperature, winds, and wave propagation in complex feedback loops. The project seeks to study how the impact of energetic electron precipitation depends on the atmospheric state.

3. Fully Funded PhD Position in microbial ecology

Summary of PhD Program:

The PhD project will address different aspects of microbial ecology and evolution. In particular, working with laboratory experiments and computer simulations, the candidate will investigate mechanisms regulating biodiversity and food web functions. Possible research foci include virus-host interaction dynamics and co-evolution under different environmental conditions, as well as analyses of natural microbial communities and change in dominant taxa under varying conditions. RAS (resirculating aquaculture systems) facilities may be used. Central to the research project will be to address the role of life strategy trade-offs in structuring microbial communities. The candidate will be responsible to design and execute a research plan with support from supervisors and technical staff.

4. Fully Funded PhD Position in Language Technology at MediaFutures

Summary of PhD Program:

We are seeking a highly motivated candidate to join our research team in WP5 on Norwegian Language Technologies. As a PhD researcher, you will work at the forefront of responsible media technologies, exploring innovative approaches to generate news content using advanced language technology methods. This position offers an exciting opportunity to contribute to innovative research and make a meaningful impact in the field. The primary task of this position will be to develop novel techniques for generating Norwegian news articles. This involves creating resources that adapt lexical, grammatical, and stylistic choices based on various parameters, including user profiles, cognitive accessibility, media characteristics (such as screen size), and journalistic formats. We are also interested in exploring how news content can be versioned and adapted dynamically.

5. Fully Funded PhD Position in Modelling flows in estuarine urban environments

Summary of PhD Program:

The position is funded through the Horizon Europe project RESCUER which brings together 8 beneficiaries and 9 associated partners across 8 countries to train 10 doctoral candidates. These doctoral candidates will enjoy a multi-disciplinary and international environment with abundant training opportunities and exchange within the institutions involved in the network. Although disregarded in classical urban-flood simulations, the role of courtyards, urban furniture, parked cars, and other urban irregularities, are relevant for people safety in both evacuation and rescue operations.

This project will be dedicated to both numerical and physical modelling of urban flows in an estuarine urban environment. In particular, this study will involve physical modeling of urban flow through irregularities and validation of a shallow-water solver and setting up a modelling chain to link riverine and urban environments. Such a modeling chain will be reached through coupling of a shallow-water solver that models interactions between river and sea in an ideal estuarine area. A real-world case using the data available in the study site of Senigallia will be studied.

6. Fully Funded PhD Position in Flow patterns of pollutants and microplastics in estuaries

Sea level rise must be considered in future predictions of pollutant circulation and distribution, and ocean currents and sediment transport also influence the redistribution of pollutants locally and globally. However, there is a lack of knowledge in fundamental research, namely advection, diffusion and dispersion of water particles having different pollutant concentration, the influence of turbulence, and the kinetic description of the chemical reactions.

7. Fully Funded PhD Position in Applied and Computational Mathematics

The main goal in the project connected to this position is to develop highly accurate numerical methods for nearshore wave forecasting faster. Specifically, the candidate will develop a stable and accurate numerical method on structured multi-block grids and implement the scheme on modern computer architectures.
