Candidates interested in fully funded PhD positions can check the details and may apply as soon as possible. Interested and eligible applicants may submit their online application for PhD programs via the University’s Online Application Portal.

1. Fully Funded PhD Position in Digital/AI Technologies

Summary of PhD Program:

There are currently many fears about digital technologies including robots and AI replacing humans at work or intervening in work practices. More realistically, recent research shows that automation is affecting certain tasks, rather than entire jobs. That is, humans will increasingly work with robots, AI and other technologies. This project moves beyond the ‘grand’ questions about AI and work and takes a novel ‘micro’-approach to ask how robots/agents/digital technologies affect interaction and work qualitatively and in practice. A special interest will be how social categories (gender, race, class) are observably interrelated with the interaction between or around agents and technologies.

2. Fully Funded PhD Position in Condensed Matter

Summary of PhD Program:

Ultrafast phonon-driven magnetic switching – You will develop new ways to optically control the magnetic state of materials with the lowest possible energy dissipation and at the fastest possible speed, using infrared/THz radiation for excitation of coupled spin-lattice dynamics. The problems of ultrafast angular momentum transfer are at the heart of many phenomena, and a hot topic of modern magnetism.

3. Fully Funded PhD Position in Developmental Neurobiology

Summary of PhD Program:

As a PhD candidate you will work on the assessment of gene expression changes in specific cell populations and cell biological characterisation and analyses of the organoids, including 2D cryosection immunofluorescence microscopy, deconvolution and morphometrics. You will further have the opportunity to use a broad spectrum of methods and techniques including mouse genetics, functional and behavioural assays, immunohistochemistry, fluorescence microscopy (wide-field, confocal and light sheet), cell and molecular biology and biochemistry. Lastly, you will be expected to supervise Master’s students.

4. Fully Funded PhD Position in Persuasion and Manipulation in Digital Contexts

Summary of PhD Program:

Smart technologies influence and ‘nudge’ human behaviour in ways that users are unaware of, for example when they use Chat GPT without knowing what sources the information is based on, when they believe these systems have meaning and agency, or when they are not aware of the algorithms that underlie recommender systems used by, for example, YouTube or Amazon. In most cases, smart technologies are developed to make users’ life easier, by doing much of the information searching and filtering for the user. Potential downside of the ease of use of these technologies is, however, that citizens increasingly use information without reflecting on its accuracy, representativeness, or authenticity, because they are no longer required to think.

5. Fully Funded PhD Position in Automata Learning

Summary of PhD Program:

You will contribute to model learning, which is a family of techniques for automatically constructing automata models of black-box systems, by systematically running tests and making observations. These techniques have been applied to analyse network protocols, legacy software, smart card readers and embedded control software. As a PhD candidate on this project, you will help to boost the scalability of automata learning through the development of approximation and abstraction methods in learning algorithms and the underlying theory. Your research will have a strong focus on developing the foundations of automata learning, using category theory and coalgebra as a formalism of choice, enabling a broad application of the results.

6. Fully Funded PhD Position in Cell-state Heterogeneity and Drug-responses in Cancer

Summary of PhD Program:

We are looking for a PhD candidate to join our team to study the influence of cell-state heterogeneity to drug responses in cancer, with the aim to develop strategies to rationally control cell behaviour to achieve better therapeutic efficacy. This is a collaborative project between Radboud University in Nijmegen and the Vrije Universiteit (VU) and Netherlands Cancer Institute (NKI) in Amsterdam, and is funded by the Dutch Cancer Society. State-of-the-art single-cell multi-omics techniques (Radboud) and computational modelling (VU/NCI) will be used to map and understand cellular responses to drugs over time. Our team members generally perform both experimental and computational work as part of their training. As a member of the RIMLS-Science institute and Department of Molecular Developmental Biology, you will enter our four-year PhD programme at Radboud University.

7. Fully Funded PhD Position in Cellular Communication in Early Human Development

Summary of PhD Program:

We are looking for a PhD candidate to join our team to study pre- and peri-implantation human development, using stem cell derived blastoid models in the context of a national PSIDER consortium, funded by the Dutch Medical Research Council (ZonMW). State-of-the-art cell culture, single-cell multi-omics techniques, as well as computational approaches will be used to study cellular communication and behaviour at different stages of development. Team members generally perform both experimental and computational work as part of their training. As a member of the RIMLS-Science institute and Department of Molecular Developmental Biology, you will follow our four-year PhD programme at Radboud University.

8. Fully Funded PhD Position in Two-photon Microscopy of Inhibitory Synapse Removal

Summary of PhD Program:

Research in the Wierenga lab focuses on the formation and plasticity of inhibitory synapses. We discovered that inhibitory synapses are very dynamic: they can appear and disappear according to the needs of the local network. Over the past years we have characterised the molecular steps and identified several pathways that regulate the formation of inhibitory synapses. In this project, you will use two-photon microscopy to monitor the removal of inhibitory synapses in cultured brain slices. You will make use of several molecular biology approaches to label and manipulate candidate molecular pathways to assess their role in context-dependent removal of inhibitory synapses.
