1. Fully Funded PhD Position in Quantum digital signatures and quantum formal methods
Summary of PhD Program:
This PhD will involve in developing novel quantum digital signature protocols, and verifying the security of the protocols using a branch in computer science known as formal methods. The success of formal methods in classical computing – they are ubiquitous e.g. in software development – led to the development of quantum formal methods, which helps to describe and analyse systems that combine quantum and classical elements. Previous research in quantum formal techniques focused on analysing realistic quantum information processing systems, to gain an understanding of concurrent and communicating quantum systems, and importantly to support the future development of tools for verifying the correctness of more complex quantum technologies.
Application Deadline: 23 July 2024
2. Fully Funded PhD Position in Incentivizing Participation in Privacy-Enhancing Technologies
Summary of PhD Program:
Privacy-Enhancing Technologies (PETs), such as Secure Multi-party Computation (MPC) and Federated Learning (FL) allow parties to collaboratively analyze a collection of data partitions where each data partition is contributed by a different party (such as banks, or law enforcement agencies). Two facts about most PETs exist: (i) the output of PETs reveals some information about the parties’ private input sets (i.e., the computation result in FL or MPC), and (ii) various variants of PETs do not output the result to all parties, even in those PETs that do, not all of the parties are necessarily interested in it. Given these facts, a natural question arises: How can we incentivize parties that do not receive the result or do not express interest in it to participate in PETs?

3. Fully Funded PhD Position in Engineering Bacteria for Biopolymer Production
Summary of PhD Program:
This PhD project intends to leverage the power of engineering biology to contribute synthesis of innovative biomaterials. Synthetic biology offers promising avenues for engineering cells to produce high-value products with tailored functionalities. We are interested in exploring novel strategies for designing and constructing synthetic pathways in microbial systems capable of producing cellulose-based materials. The project will involve implementing automated DNA assembly and material production workflows.
Application Deadline: 14 July 2024
4. Fully Funded PhD Position in Computational Modelling of Individualised Therapies and Treatment Responses in Psoriasis
Summary of PhD Program:
Psoriasis vulgaris is a systemic immune-mediated inflammatory disease affecting 2–3% of the world population. It manifests itself as red scaly plaques distributed over the whole skin, causing significant disability and impairment to quality of life. The pathophysiology of psoriasis is complex, multi-factorial and thought to be triggered through environmental genetic interactions. For example, psoriasis can be triggered in response to innate or environmental stimuli (e.g., injury, infection, or certain behavioural patterns).

5. Fully Funded PhD Position in Towards accelerating process development of the pharmaceutical agitated filter drying process
Summary of PhD Program:
This research aims to understand how process parameters and initial particle size distribution affect size distribution changes in AFDs, by developing and carrying out drying experiments in a small-scale jacketed vessel, which mimics the AFD process. A population balance model will be developed from the experiments and coupled with differential equations for moisture evaporation and temperature rise throughout the bed, to predict particle size distribution from a given drying operation. Such predictions will be compared to pilot or industrial scale results.
Application Deadline: 7th July 2024
6. Fully Funded PhD Position in Exploring Media Design for Young People’s Wellbeing through an Internet of Sensations
Summary of PhD Program:
Newcastle University is recruiting a Full-Time PhD student to explore this topic through Design Research practice in Human Computer Interaction (HCI), in Open Lab, School of Computing. We invite applicants interested in: Tangible Media, Soma Design, Sound Design; Health, Wellbeing, and Care. We encourage a creative, critical approach, and enthusiasm to work at the intersection of the social sciences, media studies, and computing.
Application Deadline: 31 July 2024
7. Fully Funded PhD Position in Mechanical Engineering in resilient railways, sponsored by Network Rail
Summary of PhD Program:
The research addresses the broad areas of infrastructure resilience and design in the face of climate change and the implications for disruption management. Specifically, the following topics are offered:
1) Measuring effective climate change adaptation and resilience of railway infrastructure
2) Human Factors and User-Centred Design for Intelligent Infrastructure systems

8. Fully Funded PhD Position in research farm tenancies in the North East of England
Summary of PhD Program:
The North East of England has the highest number of farm tenancies in the UK. This PhD research will investigate the current situation of farm tenants, and the challenges they face as land use changes. It is anticipated that the research will involve interviewing farm tenants and estate owners, and possible comparison with tenant farmers in other parts of the UK. Additional interviews will involve people dealing with the legal framework of tenancies to gain knowledge of restrictive covenants and other legal matters linked to tenancies.
