1. Fully Funded PhD Position in Cyber-Physical Systems
Summary of PhD Program:
In the coming years, multi-billion investments will be made in large projects in Northern Sweden to create a fossil-free society both nationally and globally. Luleå University of Technology is involved in several of these cutting-edge research projects and in the societal transformation that they entail. We offer a broad range of courses and study programmes to match the skills in demand. We hope that you will help us to build the sustainable companies and societies of the future. The EISLAB division of the Department of Computer Science, Electrical and Space Engineering conducts research within Cyber-Physical Systems, Internet of Things, Systems-of-Systems automation, Machine Learning, Deep Learning, Data Science, Electronic systems design, and sensor systems.
Application Deadline: 31 January 2024
2. Fully Funded PhD Position in Automatic Control with Focus on Hygiene Technology
Summary of PhD Program:
In the Department of Computer Science, Electrical and Space Engineering, the university has brought together research and education in electrical engineering, space technology, computer and systems science. We are now looking for a PhD student to grow our team and strengthen our research in the area of Automatic Control, where we focus on control and automation, dynamic modelling, instrumentation and system monitoring for various applications ranging from process control, clean energy, data center, health care, agriculture and structural engineering, to mention a few. We work in close collaboration with industry and stakeholders regionally and internationally. The Automatic Control group also has a strong link with the ProcessIT Innovations at Luleå University. ProcessIT Innovations is a collaboration center in northern Sweden that works to develop new technical solutions based on the needs in industry.
Application Deadline: 11 February 2024

3. Fully Funded PhD Position in Energy Engineering with special emphasis on oxidation of carbon nanoparticles
Summary of PhD Program:
Controlling the formed amount and nanostructure of carbon nanoparticles (CNP) via oxidative processes is essential in many different fields ranging from emissions control to production of energy storage materials. However, owing to the large heterogeneity of CNP in terms of constituent carbon allotropes and heteroatoms, the evolution of oxidation mechanisms at the nanoscale have to date not been explored in detail. We will address this problem using environmental transmission electron microscopy (ETEM) where the oxidation process is recorded in real-time at nano-to-atomic scale resolution from its initiation to end.
Application Deadline: 31 January 2024
4. Fully Funded PhD Position in Process Metallurgy with focus on pyrometallurgy
Summary of PhD Program:
You will perform research in a project with the aim to generate new knowledge about the initial slag formation processes in a Peirce-Smith converter. The metallurgical capacity of the process is largely influenced by the thermodynamic and thermophysical properties of the slag. By better understanding the initial slag formation processes, the timing of various additions can be improved, ultimately enhancing the ability to process complex materials with minimal impact on the process and product.
Application Deadline: January 31, 2024
5. Fully Funded PhD Position in Polymeric Composite Materials
Summary of PhD Program:
The main role of LTU in the project is to perform materials characterization and to develop (including manufacturing) the composites based on newly developed bio-based polymers. The PhD student is expected to develop new methods and validation tools with intended use in the initial stages of materials development. The research is expected to start from existing methods, developed to evaluate the mechanical performance of model materials, and extend these to demonstrate potential of new composites on industrial scale.
Application Deadline: January 31, 2024
6. Fully Funded PhD Position in computational modeling of electrochemical CO2 re-duction
Summary of PhD Program:
As PhD student you will use density functional theory computations to develop a fundamental understanding of electrochemical CO2 reduction to post CO or even C2+ products. The research focuses either on molecular or solid state catalysts. Your research will for example target reaction mechanisms or fundamental materials properties associated with the catalytic activity. Based on these insights you will predict novel catalysts which can be synthesized and tested by external collaborators.
Application Deadline: February 15, 2024
7. Fully Funded PhD Position in Dependable Communication and Computation Systems with a Focus on Explainable AI Algorithms
Summary of PhD Program:
You will work on an exciting project with the overarching goal of advancing AI algorithms towards the creation of Artificial General Intelligence (AGI). In your work, you will research the core algorithms of modern artificial neural networks and develop methods to increase the explainability of AI models through conceptualization of the learned representations, inclusion of context in the learning pipelines, and the development of novel methods of inductive bias. The novel algorithms you develop will be suitable for implementation on edge devices, including new AI-adapted computer architectures with in-memory computing and neuromorphic microprocessors (Intel’s Loihi).
Application Deadline: January 30, 2024
