1. Fully Funded PhD Position in Epistemic Actors

Summary of PhD Program:

Who is behind a successful scientist? In colonial Indonesia, it was local informants and assistants. They provided information scientists needed or collected plants or animals. In this project, the focus is on these Indonesian epistemic actors and the role they have played in the making of (scientific) knowledge in (and about) colonial and postcolonial Indonesia (1850-today). This includes their contribution to Western scientific knowledge but also their influence on local knowledge communities. The PhD in the project will develop a case study within this framework, with a focus on anthropology or natural history. A field trip to Indonesia is included in the project.

3. Fully Funded PhD Position in X-ray spectroscopy on electrochemical interfaces

Summary of PhD Program:

Electrochemical devices such as batteries, fuel cells, and electrolyzers play a key role in the energy transition, facilitating electrical energy storage and the production of green chemicals. This PhD project focuses on resolving the molecular-level interactions that occur at the interface between the electrodes and the electrolyte of such devices. At this interface, the interactions between the electrode surface, reactants, products, adsorbates, ions, and water molecules determine how well the electrochemistry performs and how stable the device is during prolonged operation.

4. Fully Funded PhD Position in nature-based solutions in urban waterbodies

Summary of PhD Program:

This PhD project aims to advance our understanding of the impact of nature-based solutions on urban waterbody ecology, health, and resilience. Key objectives include a) mapping the types of nature-based solutions implemented in urban aquatic systems and evaluating how well their efficacy in increasing biodiversity and restoring ecosystem functions is monitored; and b) assessing or co-designing case studies that measure success based on both ecological and societal parameters. Addressing these objectives may involve field monitoring, stakeholder surveys, citizen science initiatives, mathematical modeling, or experimental fieldwork in urban settings or at Leiden University’s Living Labs.

5. Fully Funded PhD Position in life cycle-based sustainability assessment and circularity mapping

Summary of PhD Program:

A future-proof healthcare sector requires the inclusion of safety and sustainability in the design of new medical devices. The same reasoning applies to the packaging materials that will be used in the healthcare sector, without obviously compromising their required technical performance. As a PhD candidate in this project, you will have the opportunity to develop Life Cycle Assessment models to assess the environmental and social impacts, as well as the circularity potentials of a sample of medical devices and packing materials used in the healthcare sector. These will be integrated into a comprehensive methodology to shape safe and more sustainable healthcare products and packaging materials.

6. Fully Funded PhD Position in Metaphor in Machine Translation

Summary of PhD Program:

The PhD candidate will be responsible for the Professional Users’ Perspectives work package, one of the subprojects within the NWO Vidi project “Metaphor in Machine Translation: Reactions, Responses, Repercussions [MTM project]”, funded for 2025-2029 by the Dutch Research Council (NWO), and directed by Dr. Aletta G. Dorst (Associate Professor of Translation and Human-Centred AI at Leiden University). The PhD candidate will also collaborate with the research team on the Machine Perspectives work package.

7. Fully Funded PhD Position in Noise and correlations in electrochemistry

Summary of PhD Program:

Many open questions on the fundamental principles in electrochemistry remain unsolved. Here, we propose to introduce novel techniques that permit the investigation of some of the pressing questions. Individual electrochemical reaction events have long been suspected to show anomalous correlations, both, in space and in time. Such correlations can be revealed by measuring the noise in the current. In our groups we have ample experience in noise measurements in nanoscale conductors, and these techniques can be adapted for the investigation of electrochemical processes.

8. Fully Funded PhD Position in Software Optimization and Compiler

Summary of PhD Program:

We are looking for a PhD candidate in Software Optimization and Compiler Techniques. This is an exciting and fully-funded dual-appointment PhD candidate and junior software administrator position that allows you to both conduct cutting-edge research leading to a PhD thesis as well as gain experience in system administration in a scientific computing environment. Both require in-depth knowledge and understanding of low-level computer systems and as such these positions reinforce each other. The practice helps the theory, and the theory helps the practice. As such, this unique position allows you to become a highly specialized researcher in the field of structure and optimization of computer systems.
