1. Fully Funded PhD Position in High-Temperature Metallurgy, Tramp Element Removal

Summary of PhD Program:

The Horizon Europe-funded project “Metallic Elements Dissipation Avoided by Life Cycle Design for Steel” (MEDALS) focuses on enhancing steel recyclability by addressing tramp elements—unwanted impurities that accumulate during recycling. The PhD candidate will lead high-temperature experiments to improve scrap processing and steel quality. This role involves developing innovative pyrometallurgical setups, modeling industrial processes, and validating results. The main tasks includes designing and conducting laboratory experiments to remove tramp elements from liquid steel

Application Deadline: 28.Feb.2025

2. Fully Funded PhD Position in Nuclear Engineering

Summary of PhD Program:

Severe accident management strategy in Nordic BWR plants aims to avoid rapid failure of the containment in case of corium melt resale from the reactor vessel. It is assumed that melt will fragment in a deep water pool and form a coolable bed of corium debris. That is, however, not certain. Also, there is a risk that energetic interactions between hot corium melt and water coolant can damage the containment. The goal of this project is to develop methods for addressing the most influential sources of uncertainty in severe accident progression for Nordic BWRs and use ROAAM+ framework to assess the remaining uncertainty in risk assessment.

3. Fully Funded PhD Position in physical chemistry & environmental chemistry

Summary of PhD Program:

The composition of Earth’s atmosphere and its ability to respond to pollution and climate change is maintained by oxidation reactions involving short-lived radicals. In particular, thousands of different organic radicals are present in the atmosphere, such as Criegee intermediate (CI), resulting from the reactions of unsaturated organic compounds with Ozone. Despite several decades of research, these CI remain very difficult to observe in laboratory and have never been observed in the atmosphere. Thus many questions remain on their reactions.

4. Fully Funded PhD Position in protein design for improved terpene biosynthesis

Summary of PhD Program:

With a growing population and a decrease in the available natural resources on our planet, there is a great need for innovative production methods based on green chemistry. The main aim of this project is to develop protein-based catalysts for selective transformations applied to terpenes. The research area of the PhD student includes protein design, enzyme engineering and synthetic biology to expand nature’s current repertoire with respect to selective biosynthesis of terpenes.

7. Fully Funded PhD Position in Cold Mix Asphalt

Summary of PhD Program:

This project is funded by the Swedish Competence Centre in Road Technology (KCV) for four years. The aim of project is to increase the knowledge about Cold Mix Asphalt (CMA) – a technology that reduces resource usage, energy consumption, and environmental impact of road construction and maintenance. Your tasks in the project include conducting experiments and numerical modelling on bitumen emulsions, binders, and CMA mixtures. In addition, you will also use Finite Element analyses and a Life Cycle Assessment framework to evaluate the impact of the CMA technology on road sustainability.

8. Fully Funded PhD Position in integrated transport models for societal outcomes

Summary of PhD Program:

The focus of the project is to integrate societal impact assessment of transport solutions with travel behavior models. Travel behaviour models and societal impact assessment methods are built separately and often need particular expertise to synthesize and streamline the findings. This project will address this issue in an effort to explore and develop integrated assessment models with AI. It will address how new technology based solutions (e.g. CAVs, EVs) and nuanced policy interventions (e.g. restricting fossil fuel vehicle use, reducing car parking, introducing carpooling) impact sustainability outcomes, specifically behavioural adaptation, emission targets and equity goals.
