Candidates interested in fully funded PhD positions can check the details and may apply as soon as possible. Interested and eligible applicants may submit their online application for PhD programs via the University’s Online Application Portal.

1. Fully Funded PhD Position in biology of RAS-driven disease

Summary of PhD Program:

Applications are invited for a Ph.D. student position in the lab of Anna Sablina at VIB-KULeuven Center for Cancer Biology in Leuven, Belgium. The Anna Sablina group is a pioneer in the investigation of cooperative interactions promoting human disease. To achieve this, we have taken a multi-faceted approach by combining mouse modelling with comprehensive CRISPR-based techniques and multi-omics approaches. The results of our studies have been published in multiple high-profile journals including Science, Cancer Cell, and Nature Cell Biology.

2. Fully Funded PhD Position in Structural elucidation of membrane-remodeling protein complexes by cryo-EM

Summary of PhD Program:

A fully funded 4-year Ph.D. position is available in the laboratory “Structure and Function of Membrane Proteins” at the VIB-VUB Center for Structural Biology, Brussels, Belgium. The project focuses on the structural elucidation of membrane-remodeling protein complexes from the endoplasmic reticulum and integrates fundamental cell biology and structural biology by cryo-electron microscopy.

The asymmetrical distribution of lipids in biological membranes is a well-established biological paradigm and essential for signaling and organelle-/protein trafficking. While the regulated asymmetry in the plasma membrane of eukaryotic cells is well-studied, much less is known about the symmetry or asymmetry of lipid bilayers in intracellular organelles.

The endoplasmic reticulum plays a central role in this context as lipids are retrieved from its cytosolic leaflet for export to acceptor organelles. Interleaflet balance and availability of lipid species in the leaflets of the endoplasmic reticulum membrane are governed by scramblases, a functional lipid transporter class (Brunner et al., Nature, 2014) that only recently was recognized to be required for non-vesicular lipid transport and as essential host factor(s) for virus assembly.

3. Fully Funded PhD Position in role of astrocytes in cortical plasticity

Summary of PhD Program:

Fully funded PhD student / postdoctoral research associate position available at Neuro-Electronics Research Flanders in Leuven, Belgium, (NERF, www.nerf.be), will be supervised by Vincent Bonin (NERF) and Lut Arckens (KU Leuven). We are looking for a highly motivated and enthusiastic fellow interested in astrocyte neurobiology to join an exciting multi-lab collaboration on cell subtype-specific neuron-glia interactions between the Vision to Action Lab (PI: Vincent Bonin, NERF), the Neuroplasticity and Neuroproteomics Lab (Lut Arckens, KU Leuven), and the Laboratory for Glia Biology (Matthew Holt, VIB CBD). This consortium of labs brings expertise in visual cortical processing, visual plasticity and astrocyte biology and provides the opportunity to bridge measurements across scales and modalities.

4. Fully Funded PhD Position in neural circuits of sensory selection

Summary of PhD Program:

We are looking for an enthusiastic PhD student to study neural circuits of sensory selection in the mouse cortex and thalamus. At any moment, we are exposed to a multitude of sensory inputs, and our brain filters this information and processes only a small portion of it that is relevant to us. The appropriate sensory selection is also relevant in a clinical context such as autism spectrum disorders This selective processing of information is suggested to arise via the coordinated activity of multiple regions of the cortex. In this project, we aim to reveal neural pathways involved in the sensory selection. We will apply advanced brain imaging and genetic circuit tracing tools in a well-controlled multisensory behavioural assay.

5. Fully Funded PhD Position in ALS using multi-omics

Summary of PhD Program:

In this project, the candidate will develop new computational strategies to analyze and integrate readily available multi-omics datasets to identify axon-specific RNAs in health and disease and elucidate critical unknown determinants of axonal/synaptic maintenance and loss during neurodegeneration. The candidate will also be co-hosted in the Laboratory of Multi-omic Integrative Bioinformatics (LMIB) and co-supervised by Prof. Sifrim, where she/he will collaborate in the development of novel AI-driven tools for data integration and pattern recognition in the context of this project. The project will require careful planning, coordination, communication, motivation, and dedication.

6. Fully Funded PhD Position in cancer research

Summary of PhD Program:

Omics-based strategies ((epi-)genomics, transcriptomics, proteomics, …) are opening the unprecedented potential for developing novel precision oncology tools for improved diagnosis, prognosis, and therapy response prediction of cancer patients. Liquid biopsies are now offering great potential for the non-invasive exploration of circulating tumor nucleic acids and cells. Recently, our team has implemented DNA methylation sequencing on tumor tissue and liquid biopsy samples of cancer patients to allow improved diagnosis and classification of the tumor. The new Ph.D. student will further develop, optimize, implement, apply, and validate this novel approach (both on the analytical and bio-informatic side). The final aim of the project is to improve the diagnosis of adult cancer patients with an unknown primary tumor location.

7. Fully Funded PhD Position in Medical Biotechnology

Summary of PhD Program:

We look for a candidate with an analytic background that will be at the interface between the Degroeve and the Eyckerman team. You will follow, apply and further optimize state-of-the-art predictive AI research and build bioinformatics tools to analyze specific datasets and tasks generated by the Eyckerman lab. The main focus will be on the computational identification and validation of experimentally observed protein-protein interactions, how these protein complexes change through the intracellular space and time (protein complex dynamics) as well as how they vary between different cell types.
