1. Fully Funded PhD Position in Molecular Geochemistry

Summary of PhD Program:

This Ph.D. project is on the mineralization of CO2 by MgO and CaO minerals, and is funded by the Formas. The selected candidate will explore mechanisms of Mg- and Ca-carbonate formation on MgO and CaO (nano)minerals exposed to the atmosphere. This research aims to support direct air capture technologies for mitigating hikes in atmospheric CO2 levels, as well as advancing fundamental ideas on mineral growth. This work will make use of various spectroscopic methods, X-ray diffraction and possibly computational modelling techniques available at Umeå University. The candidate will integrate the Molecular Geochemistry research environment of the Department of Chemistry and work with various analytical platforms of the Chemical and Biological Center.

2. Fully Funded PhD Position in Applied Physics

Summary of PhD Program:

The TEC-lab research environment (Thermochemical Energy Conversion Laboratory) at Umeå University is looking for an outstanding PhD candidate interested in how the local chemical environment of chromium, Cr, in secondary raw materials like ashes or biochars may impact phosphorus recovery. Cr in fertilizers is regulated both with respect to total concentration and oxidation state as its toxicity depends on its oxidation state. The complex matrix of ash fractions and biochars makes accurate determination of oxidation states for chromium near-impossible with conventional analysis. You will work in a multidisciplinary environment where chemistry, physics, and energy technology meet in advanced material characterization both in laboratory and at synchrotrons.

3. Fully Funded PhD Position in Biophysical Chemistry

Summary of PhD Program:

As a PhD student, you will be part of a research team that combines experimental methods and computer simulation to understand membrane protein transport and signalling processes. The focus is to develop novel structural biology techniques with the aim to understand membrane protein transport and regulation with applications in heart disease and antimicrobial resistance. The group has pioneered synchrotron-based time-resolved X-ray solution scattering of ATP-dependent protein reactions with significant contributions to the field both with respect to experimental design and high-performance computing protocols for data analysis, visualization, and interpretation.

4. Fully Funded PhD Position in chemistry

Summary of PhD Program:

Chemicals in products and materials provide large societal and health benefits, however some chemicals are ubiquitous in the environment and some have shown to cause adverse effects in biota including humans. Sustainable use of chemicals and efficient regulatory and policy actions requires expertise and tools for early identification of potentially hazardous chemicals. This project aims at developing tools to characterize and identify polymers as new and/or emerging risk chemicals (NERCs). Polymers are often overlooked in risk assessment of chemicals and here we will focus on fluorinated polymers that could degrade to per- and polyfluoroalkyl substances (PFAS).

5. Fully Funded PhD Position in Physiotherapy

Summary of PhD Program:

Our research group studies human movement behaviour, particularly following disease or injury. The present position concerns a project that addresses anterior cruciate ligament (ACL) injury related to consequences and movement control of persons with injury in comparison to individuals with healthy knees. The project addresses the use of technology within physiotherapy including human motion analysis with laboratory-based methodology (kinematics, kinetics and electromyographic recordings). Part of the project is a qualitative investigation of physiotherapists’ perceptions of current and future rehabilitation of anterior cruciate ligament injuries, including the use of various technology. Our research aims to evaluate and develop assessment methods and treatment, and involves multi-professional collaboration with, among others, biomedical engineers, statisticians and orthopedic surgeons.

6. Fully Funded PhD Position in Mathematical Statistics

Summary of PhD Program:

The project aims to address these limitations by i) developing methods for fitting SCAM that can handle much larger data sets and more complex model structures than up to now been possible; ii) developing methods for models with response distribution beyond the standard cases; iii) developing open-source software that implements the new methods and meets the needs of scientific and industrial users within the relevant fields.

7. Fully Funded PhD Position in Psychiatry

Summary of PhD Program:

We are seeking a PhD student excited to study how the brain regulates feeding behavior. Our group approaches feeding behavior on a molecular, neuronal circuit and behavioral level. We are particularly interested in how the brain integrates emotions, memory and metabolic signaling to encode mental states such as hunger and satiety. As a Ph.D. student in our group you will uncover novel neuro-molecular mechanisms by which the brain influences what we eat and how such mechanisms can be used to treat unhealthy eating habits and eating disorders like anorexia nervosa. We believe in fostering an environment where everyone has the support, freedom, and ability to answer the big questions in neuroscience. Doing your Ph.D. in our group will give you critical insight to why we eat in the way we do and a versatile platform for your future career.
