1. Fully Funded PhD Position in beech silviculture
Summary of PhD Program:
The PhD project focuses on the regeneration and early management of beech, both with natural regeneration and with planted seedlings. We will use old and new experiments in monocultures and mixtures, in several stages of stand development from regeneration to first thinning. In addition, the economical and provisional services of a full stand rotation will be explored and evaluated for the management alternatives. The PhD student will acquire a research education with competence in silviculture, growth and yield and Heureka- analysis.
Application Deadline: 2023-07-30
2. Fully Funded PhD Position in forest pathology and silviculture
Summary of PhD Program:
The PhD project focuses on the regeneration and restoration of European ash. The project will generate new knowledge on the status of ash regeneration in natural stands that have been chronically affected by the ash dieback disease and in new plantations with propagated genotypes phenotypically selected for high tolerance to the invasive fungal pathogen. The project also aims to establish strategies for forest owners to guide restoration efforts in areas where the disease has caused significant damage and mortality.

3. Fully Funded PhD Position in Plant speciation genetics
Summary of PhD Program:
A PhD position is available at the Swedish University of Agricultural Sciences (SLU), Uppsala, Sweden, to study the mechanisms of reproductive isolation in plants. The project will use a combination of reverse genetics, transcriptomics, microscopy, and population genetics approaches to understand the molecular processes preventing close relative species from hybridizing in sympatry. The position is funded by a project grant from the Swedish Research Council for four years.

4. Fully Funded PhD Position in regeneration of continuous cover forests
Summary of PhD Program:
Our goal with this project is to identify cost-effective paths forward for the stand establishment and management of new and already selectively cut mature mixed-temperate broadleaved forests. Specifically, we will answer the following questions: How can natural regeneration and planting be used to regenerate such diverse forests? How does ungulate browsing pressure and proximity to mature broadleaf forests interact to determine best restoration practices? To answer these questions, we will use already existing experiments with selective cutting, survey- and remote sensing data, and collaborate with an excellent multidisciplinary team of international researchers. We are looking for a person who, as part of a PhD, will address these questions.

5. Fully Funded PhD Position in forest economics
Summary of PhD Program:
The profile of the student we are looking for is a person who is committed to behavioral studies based on economic principles and quantitative methods. The candidate will be responsible for: integrating economics and forest resource management knowledge into relevant research design; developing relevant research questions; applying appropriate econometric and other analytical tools; writing scientific manuscripts and compile a Ph.D. thesis. Coursework is included in the Ph.D. program.
Application Deadline: August 14 2023
6. Fully Funded PhD Position in Microbiology, Biogas production
Summary of PhD Program:
We are looking for a highly motivated doctoral student in the subject area anaerobic microbiology and biotechnology. The project focuses on increasing knowledge and find solutions to increase microbial degradation of acids and thus increase production of renewable energy in form of biogas. In biogas processes, acids are commonly broken down by microorganisms that carry out a so-called syntrophic collaboration (cross-feeding). These microorganisms are highly dependent on close physical contact between cells and many organisms have developed several smart mechanisms to cooperate with their partners in order to survive under stressed growth conditions.

7. Fully Funded PhD Position in life cycle assessment: reduced losses of beef
Summary of PhD Program:
We are now seeking a doctoral student who will work on assessing the environmental effects of reduced losses of beef on Swedish farms, which may also include evaluating effects on animal welfare. The results will be used to highlight the potential of the Environmental Code to reduce food waste and losses in Sweden and to provide a basis for discussions on climate measures, improved animal husbandry and updated regulations on emergency slaughter. The scientific method will primarily be life cycle assessment, where methodology development towards including animal welfare can be included. Since beef has a large climate impact, the project can bring substantial climate savings.
