1. Fully Funded PhD Position in beech silviculture
Summary of PhD Program:
The PhD project focuses on the regeneration and early management of beech, both with natural regeneration and with planted seedlings. We will use old and new experiments in monocultures and mixtures, in several stages of stand development from regeneration to first thinning. In addition, the economical and provisional services of a full stand rotation will be explored and evaluated for the management alternatives. The PhD student will acquire a research education with competence in silviculture, growth and yield and Heureka- analysis.

2. Fully Funded PhD Position in regeneration of continuous cover forests
Summary of PhD Program:
Our goal with this project is to identify cost-effective paths forward for the stand establishment and management of new and already selectively cut mature mixed-temperate broadleaved forests. Specifically, we will answer the following questions: How can natural regeneration and planting be used to regenerate such diverse forests? How does ungulate browsing pressure and proximity to mature broadleaf forests interact to determine best restoration practices? To answer these questions, we will use already existing experiments with selective cutting, survey- and remote sensing data, and collaborate with an excellent multidisciplinary team of international researchers. We are looking for a person who, as part of a PhD, will address these questions.

4. Fully Funded PhD Position in Animal Science
Summary of PhD Program:
Within Swedish egg production, high ammonia levels are considered as the major environmental challenge. The majority of Swedish hens are kept in cage-free systems with access to a littered area which increases the behavioural repertoire of the laying hen in a positive way. However, manure accumulating in the litter will increase the ammonia concentration in the indoor air, as nitrogen in the manure is converted to ammonia by bacteria and in chemical processes. Lower levels of crude protein in the feed and thereby nitrogen in the manure decrease the risk of ammonia formation, however, a certain level of nitrogen in the feed is needed as building blocks for protein. Increased level of fibre in the feed might potentially also reduce the ammonia volatilization by increasing the microbial activity so more nitrogen is excreted as microbial more stable protein.

5. Fully Funded PhD Position in forest pathology and silviculture
Summary of PhD Program:
The PhD project focuses on the regeneration and restoration of European ash. The project will generate new knowledge on the status of ash regeneration in natural stands that have been chronically affected by the ash dieback disease and in new plantations with propagated genotypes phenotypically selected for high tolerance to the invasive fungal pathogen. The project also aims to establish strategies for forest owners to guide restoration efforts in areas where the disease has caused significant damage and mortality.

7. Fully Funded PhD Position in hygienization in black soldier fly larvae rearing
Summary of PhD Program:
The focus of this project is on the hygiene of the process as well as of the larvae and the treatment frass when bio-converting biodegradable waste streams (focus on post-consumer food wastes) found in society, using BSFL. The project is run within the Environmental Engineering group at the Department of Energy and Technology at SLU, whose main focus is to develop and assess techniques to close the loop of plant nutrition between urban and rural settings. The work will be conducted in close collaboration with researchers and doctoral candidates in the group who work on related issues. The focus is to evaluate the degradation of various biological infectious agents such as bacteria (also spore-forming) and prions.
