1. Fully Funded PhD Position in Virtual Certification of Hydrogen-Resistant Materials

Summary of PhD Program:

This PhD studentship will innovate with a virtual toolbox to rank the resistance of microstructures against fatigue failure under hydrogen environments at multiple temperatures. The work will rely on a novel material-invariant formulation that integrate experimental information and multiscale computational approaches from various metallic materials. The candidate will work closely with modellers and experimentalist to link fundamental research with damage prognosis and deliver work-class research to our industrial sponsor.

Application Deadline: 01 May 2024

2. Fully Funded PhD Position in renewable energy transportation

Summary of PhD Program:

You will develop a prototype optical gas detector for use in “standoff” mode, allowing operators to detect gas leaks from a distance. This technology has the benefit of high sensitivity and specificity to individual gases, and uses advanced laser technology originally developed for telecoms and quantum sensing. A new generation of high-performing sensors is considered essential to support the coming energy revolution and a key element of combating climate change. The initial target is to measure ammonia, to enable safe detection of low-level leaks. Opportunities to apply this technology to other gases (such as carbon monoxide) will also be explored, for wider applications in marine transportation.

3. Fully Funded PhD Position in sustainable manufacturing and materials

Summary of PhD Program:

Applications are invited for a fully funded PhD studentship in the area of sustainable manufacturing and materials and more specifically in intelligent sorting to upcycle post-consumer metal scrap, within the Sustainable Manufactruring Systems Centre and in collaboration with Constellium (a global manufacturer of aluminium rolled products, extruded products, and structural parts based on a large variety of advanced alloys).

Application Deadline: 06 Dec 2023

4. Fully Funded PhD Position in Big Data

Summary of PhD Program:

A funded PhD studentship is available within the Autonomous and Cyber Physical Systems Centre at Cranfield University, Bedfordshire, UK. As aerospace platforms go through their service life, gradual performance degradations and unwarranted system failures can occur. There is certain physical information known a priori in such aerospace platform operations. The main research hypothesis to be tested in this research is that it should be possible to significantly improve the performance of extreme learning and assure safe and reliable maintenance operation by integrating this prior knowledge into the learning mechanism.

5. Fully Funded PhD Position in Advanced Coatings for Improved Environmental Performance

Summary of PhD Program:

This PhD project involves researching the bridging technologies on behalf of the industrial sponsor Siemens Energy Industrial Turbomachinery Limited, which is a manufacturer of industrial gas turbines (IGT). The successful research into those bridging technologies (which will include modelling and experimental work) will reduce greenhouse emissions by enabling operation of the IGTs at higher metal temperatures and with novel fuels. The proposed research therefore aims to develop coating technologies, which will provide component materials the ability to cope with higher operating temperatures, and may be further beneficial when hydrogen fuel, or other novel green fuels, become standard, as these fuels may induce higher operating temperatures.

6. Fully Funded PhD Position in fugitive methane emissions

Summary of PhD Program:

Methane is a major greenhouse gas and so contributes to climate change. Cranfield and SLB are offering an iCASE PhD studentship, developing practical methods to monitor methane emissions from point source emissions such as oil and gas facilities. The proposed research will link observations of methane and other data streams from client facilities with appropriate atmospheric modelling techniques, to identify and estimate the size and location of leaks within site boundaries. This studentship will help SLB and its present & future clients meet their net-zero greenhouse gas emission objectives. This studentship will provide a bursary of up to £18,000 (tax free) plus fees for four years.

7. Fully Funded PhD Position in Aerodynamic and Thermal Management

Summary of PhD Program:

A fully funded PhD studentship with GKN and great opportunity to work closely with a leading aerospace organisation at the forefront of Sustainable Aviation to research and develop novel aircraft aerodynamic and thermal management concepts . We are looking for enthusiastic, inquisitive and motivated researchers with a strong interest in aerodynamics to join a diverse and inclusive research group focusing on technologies for the decarbonisation of aviation and the exploration of advanced aerodynamic and energy based analysis methods.

This is an GKN-EPSRC CASE Award that focuses on the development of new aerodynamic analysis and thermal management concepts that will utilise the wasted heat from the aircraft power and propulsion systems to heat up the skin of the aircraft to improve its aerodynamic performance. The successful candidate will join a diverse, world class research group and will work closely with the industrial sponsor and other international researchers. The researcher will also have the opportunity to have an industrial placement.
