1. Fully Funded PhD Position in intelligent control

Summary of PhD Program:

ICEMAN project pioneers sustainable manufacturing by exploring connections between manufacturing heat signatures and surface integrity. In the context of the industry’s substantial contribution to global CO2 emissions, ICEMAN aims to optimize productivity, environmental impact, and product lifecycle. Our prior work in heatmetry and surface characterization suggests that manufacturing heat signatures correlate with process performance and surface integrity. Objectives include developing a high-speed heat flux sensor tool and an AI-based real-time control system.

2. Fully Funded PhD Position in Quantum Doctoral (QDoc) Pilot programme

Summary of PhD Program:

The Doctoral Researcher will be positioned in Open Quantum Systems, Decoherence, and Quantum Protocols project. Quantum systems are fragile and lose easily their quantum properties via decoherence. Therefore, the study of open quantum systems plays an important role in modern quantum physics including its technological applications. This project develops modelling schemes for general decoherence mechanisms and develops a framework for protecting quantum properties in the presence of noise with applications to quantum protocols with photonics and linear optical systems.

3. Fully Funded PhD Position in immunoregulation in autoimmunity and cancer

Summary of PhD Program:

Disorders in immune system and lymphocyte function lead to immune diseases or cancer. We aim at studying the molecular mechanisms underlying immune mediated diseases aiming at enabling individualized treatment in the future. Molecular Systems Immunology group aims at understanding the regulation of human immune system to predict, prevent and treat immune mediated disorders. We study epigenetic and transcriptional regulation of T cells and molecular mechanisms of immune mediated diseases such as Type 1 Diabetes.

Project 1. is focused on studying how the novel long noncoding RNAs we have identified influence human T cell differentiation and their role in autoimmune diseases and cancer (Andrabi et al. Proc Natl Acad Sci U S A. 121:e2315363121, 2024 PMID: 38805281, Khan et al. Front. Immunol., 13: 856762, 2022 PMID: 35784351 and unpublished results).

Project 2. in collaboration with Orion Pharma Immuno-Oncology team studies molecular basis of human T cell exhaustion in cancer (Brunell et al. Front Immunol 14:1151632, 2023 PMID: 37122741 and unpublished results). A range of methods including single-cell genomics, mass cytometry, proteomics and CRISPR-Cas9 will be used in experimental work along with computational tools to address the questions.

Application Deadline: 19 August 2024

4. Fully Funded PhD Position in astronomy

Summary of PhD Program:

The Finnish Centre for Astronomy with ESO is seeking for a fixed term Doctoral researcher/ Project researcher in astronomy, more specifically in the field of active galactic nuclei. This work is part of a consortium project, JetOrigin, funded by the Research Council of Finland, which is a joint project between two research groups in two different universities. The selected person will analyze polarization observations conducted with the ALMA interferometer in order to study magnetic fields in the plasma jets launched by supermassive black holes. They will also compare the observations with numerical simulations and theoretical models.

5. 1-2 Fully Funded PhD Position in Health Technology

Summary of PhD Program:

The positions are in the STIMULUS project (Speckle Technology and Digital Biomarkers of Microvascular Function for Monitoring Cardiovascular Diseases), funded by a European Innovation Council Pathfinder grant. In this project, we develop new instruments for assessing adverse changes in microcirculatory status linked to hypertension, chronic kidney disease and heart failure, leading to earlier detection of cardiovascular diseases (over 60 million people in the EU suffer from them). The instruments are developed and validated in clinical trials. We integrate two state-of-the-art technologies leading to a novel innovation, 3D speckle tissue monitoring.
