1. Fully Funded PhD Position in Understanding the attribute-framing effect in risk communication
Summary of PhD Program:
Communicators can describe the same risks in different ways. For example, a road-safety campaign might focus on the percentage chance that a pedestrian avoids injury after being hit by a car at 30mph or the percentage chance that they are injured. A fire-safety campaign might focus on the percentage chance that a resident who stays at home during a wildfire saves or fails to save their property. A medical team might communicate the success rate or failure rate of a particular procedure. These different descriptions – or attribute frames – are widely believed to provoke different responses (such as the choice to drive at particular speeds, to evacuate, or to undergo a medical procedure). For example, we might expect a patient to have a more positive attitude about an operation if they are told that the success rate is 95% than if they are told that the failure rate is 5%.
Application Deadline: 30 October 2024
2. Fully Funded PhD Position in Racist hate speech: How bystanders become upstanders when witnessing derogatory remarks
Summary of PhD Program:
This PhD will focus on examining (a) how witnessing racist hate speech influences bystanders, and (b) how to counter racist hate speech and enhance allyship with victimised ethnic groups. Both are important to protect and support victims, and to understand and support bystanders who are also (indirectly) affected. The project will allow for the progressive development of high-quality research, supporting growth and ambition. The project will involve a narrative review, as well as (primarily) quantitative methods to explore the research questions in a series of empirical studies.

3. Fully Funded PhD Position in Identifying optimal treatment for pain in older adults: Evidence synthesis and network meta-analysis
Summary of PhD Program:
Older adults are far more likely to experience persistent pain than younger adults. However, identifying the best treatment options in this population is challenging. Effective pain medications may not be viable options for older adults due to the increased presence of chronic conditions (e.g. heart problems, gastrointestinal disorders) or existing medication regimes that may contraindicate their use. Adherence to non-pharmacological interventions such as exercise can also be challenging for some older adults. As a consequence, both acute and long lasting pain in this age group is often not effectively treated.

4. Fully Funded PhD Position in Fabrication of three-dimensional printed drug-eluting devices for women’s health applications
Summary of PhD Program:
Advancements in 3-dimensional printing (3DP) technologies and material science have contributed to the efforts to achieve local delivery of drugs to specific disease sites with minimal systemic effects such as with Implantable drug delivery devices. The technology offers the unique opportunity to create complex designs, but limited research has been done to 3D print drug loaded implants for women’s health applications. Therefore, the aim of this project will be to develop 3D printed drugeluting implants for women’s health applications to achieve tailored drug release profiles. A systematic investigation of key process parameters impacting drug release will be performed.

5. Fully Funded PhD Position in Exploring Adult Well-Being After Childhood Traumatic Loss Through a Comprehensive Retrospective Study
Summary of PhD Program:
Traumatic loss during childhood, whether through the death of a loved one or other sudden distressing events, can severely disrupt a young person’s development. It often leads to challenges such as concentration difficulties, guilt, and sleep disruptions, which can persist into adulthood, manifesting as behavioural problems, academic struggles, and even physical health issues. Traditional coping strategies, including trauma-focused cognitive behavioural therapy (TF-CBT), have limitations, particularly in addressing the diverse ways individuals cope with grief. Creative arts interventions offer promise but require further integration with established therapeutic approaches.
Application Deadline: 30 October 2024
6. Fully Funded PhD Position in Breeding Better Biocontrols: Genomic approaches for strain improvement of hyphal-parasitic fungi
Summary of PhD Program:
Fungal pathogens are responsible for up to 16% of global crop losses, acting both pre-harvest and post-harvest as well as through mycotoxin contamination. There is a growing need for alternatives to chemical control, with emergence of pathogens that are resistant to fungicides, compounding the loss of many plant protection products due risks to human and environmental health. However, a range of beneficial fungi have been demonstrated as effective biocontrol agents for protection against insect pests and against disease-causing fungi.
Biocontrols offer an excellent environmentally favourable solution for crop protection. However, they remain less effective than chemical control alternatives. Using advanced genomics we have the opportunity to study and implement new breeding strategies for strain improvement, thus offering a greater biocontrol efficacy and persistence in the environment.
