Are you holding Master’s degree and looking for fully funded PhD positions? University of Helsinki, Finland invites online application for multiple funded PhD Programs / fully funded PhD positions in various research areas.

Candidates interested in fully funded PhD positions can check the details and may apply as soon as possible. Interested and eligible applicants may submit their online application for PhD programs via the University’s Online Application Portal.

1. Fully Funded PhD Position in Material science

Summary of PhD Program:

The FUNgSULATION project aims to produce novel insulation materials by utilising biomass from rewetted soils: cattail fibers combined with willow. We aim to unleash the advantages of chemical and structural properties of biomasses via examining stepwise extraction kinetics to isolate water-soluble carbohydrates, and extractives of (willow) biomass, from lignocellulosic fibrous parts.

2. Fully Funded PhD Position in Material science/ Chemistry

Summary of PhD Program:

The LignoGels project relies on the valorization of the underexploited lignocellulosic materials to develop lignin-based hydrogels/microneedles for cancer immunotherapy and wound healing. Different grades of lignin with distinct composition and properties will be used to prepare the lignin nanoparticles, and evaluate their influence on immunostimulative and antibacterial effect. We aim to incorporate these lignin nanoparticles into hydrogel/microneedles structures based on natural polymers (e.g., hemicelluloses, gelatin) containing the therapeutic agents for local administration, maximizing the retention time and therapeutic efficiency of the nanoplatforms.

3. Fully Funded PhD Position in Molecular Nutrition

Summary of PhD Program:

The project aims to improve fibre-rich plant protein sources by removing or reducing compounds causing unpleasant gut symptoms. This will be achieved by applying different processing techniques on food raw materials to identify the most effective treatments in reducing the symptom causing compounds. The efficiency of the treatments will be validated in gut symptom sensitive volunteers in a set of intervention trials, and the underlying molecular mechanisms will be elucidated by analysing the composition and metabolic activity of the gut microbiota.

4. Fully Funded PhD Position in Chemistry of biomaterials

Summary of PhD Program:

The project aims to evaluate the enzymes, which are secreted by a white rot fungus in the presence of lignin-rich wood hemicelluloses obtained from hot water extraction processes. The enzymes will be produced and characterized, and then applied to demonstrate reactions occurring with lignin. The detailed reaction mechanisms and kinetics of the reactions will be then studied by detailed characterization of reactions with a lignin-carbohydrate-complex (LCC) model compound, which will be synthesized and purified. The project is expected to produce novel and selective biotechnological tools for processing of biomaterials.
