1. Fully Funded PhD Position in NMR and Electron Paramagnetic Resonance

Summary of PhD Program:

Applications are invited for 3.5-year full funded PhD studentship based in the Department of Chemical Engineering & Biotechnology, University of Cambridge and Johnson Matthey (JM) PLC. Previous projects on NMR relaxometry in collaboration between JM and the Magnetic Resonance Research Centre at the University of Cambridge have demonstrated successful application of NMR relaxation measurements to porous materials of industrial relevance to JM. This proposed project will investigate how the range of low-field magnetic resonance techniques can be expanded, using Fast Field Cycling (FFC) and Electron Paramagnetic Resonance (EPR), to understand mass transport in catalyst coated membrane (CCM) materials for electrolytic hydrogen. Effective and reliable characterisation of CCMs is a key challenge in green Hydrogen Technologies.

2. Fully Funded PhD Position in Re-evaluating Punch Marks on Early Italian Paintings

Summary of PhD Program:

This project will be jointly supervised by Lucy Wrapson, Donal Cooper (both University of Cambridge) and Marika Spring (National Gallery). The student will be expected to spend time at both the University of Cambridge and the National Gallery, as well as becoming part of the wider cohort of CDP-funded students across the UK. The student will benefit from academic teaching and mentoring and graduate skills training at Cambridge as well as staff-level access to collections, resources and training programmes at the National Gallery.

3. Fully Funded PhD Position in Blood and Transplant Research Unit in Organ Donation and Transplantation

Summary of PhD Program:

Organ perfusion is currently a very active research field and the BTRU has internationally recognised expertise in this area. Work under Theme 1 of the BTRU is focusing on optimisation of perfusion parameters and examining ex vivo perfusion as a platform for the pre-transplant delivery of cellular and other therapeutics in the heart, liver and kidney.

4. Fully Funded PhD Position in African American short fiction and magazines in the mid-twentieth century

Summary of PhD Program:

The project aims to generate new perspectives on the history of short story writing in US magazines. The British Library holds an important collection of American magazines with a tradition of publishing short fiction. The doctoral project will explore the literary, cultural, and historical contexts of these collections, with a particular focus on African American short fiction in the mid-twentieth century. Applicants are required to provide a research proposal which might centre, for example, on a case study of a single author; a case study of a particular magazine; a synchronic study of African American magazine fiction in a larger media or cultural context; a diachronic account of mid-twentieth century magazine fiction in the development of African American literature.
