1. PhD Programs in Using biochronologies and chemical tracers to track salmon movements and growth in a changing world

Summary of PhD Positions:

This PhD will use archival tissues (otoliths, eye lenses, scales) that encompass both freshwater and marine phases to understand the factors driving life history choices and mortality in salmon. The successful student will use state-of-the-art techniques on Atlantic and Pacific salmon from multiple populations and countries (including the UK, Ireland, Spain, Greenland and USA) to reconstruct patterns in habitat use, migration phenology, growth rate and diet. They will use these data to explore intraspecific variation in movement and growth to reveal carryover effects and identify factors associated with poor return years.

2. PhD Programs in Ecological impacts of Nature-Based-Solutions for flood-risk management from catchment to coast

Summary of PhD Positions:

This fully funded Ph.D. studentship will evaluate the impact of natural flood risk management (NFM), and related nature-based solutions, on catchment ecosystem functions including co-benefits for ecosystem services (biodiversity, carbon sequestration, flood defence). The primary focus will be on small river systems, catchments, coastal habitats (salt marsh and intertidal flats), in south Essex.

This research will be addressed through a combination of field monitoring, experimental manipulation, and working with a team, including Industry, Government Agencies, and non-government organisations working together to deliver the wider Catchment to Coast project.
