1. Fully Funded PhD Position in Political vocabulary of eighteenth-century Britain
Summary of PhD Program:
The Faculty of Arts and CASCADE MSCA Doctoral Network invite applications for a Doctoral Researcher in Digital Humanities / Intellectual History to a fixed-term employment for 3 years, with the possibility of a one-year extension contract. The position is titled “Political vocabulary of eighteenth-century Britain”.
How was politics operationalised in the print discourse of eighteenth-century Britain? This project will apply computational methods to traditional historical enquiry, exploring possible parallels and discontinuities within intellectual history. It will draw upon CASCADE expertise in techniques including concept modelling and distributional semantics, and seek to triage problems presented by historical text collections digitised using optical character recognition.
The doctoral student should: 1) map the development of political vocabulary in eighteenth-century Britain; 2) lay groundwork for developing a theory of meaning change with respect to the history of ideas. The candidate should have prior knowledge of eighteenth-century Britain. In the project, they will have access to Eighteenth Century Collections Online (ECCO); the English Short Title Catalogue (ESTC); Cand British Library Newspapers and different kinds of text reuse datasets compiled from these datasets.
Application Deadline: 28.3.2024
2. Fully Funded PhD Position in Adapting computational methods to challenges in historical research at scale
Summary of PhD Program:
The Faculty of Arts and CASCADE MSCA Doctoral Network invite applications for a Doctoral Researcher in Digital Humanities / Data Science to a fixed-term employment for 3 years, with the possibility of a one-year extension contract. The position is titled: “Adapting computational methods to challenges in historical research at scale”.
Drawing from CASCADE’s expertise in both the conceptual understanding of different types of semantic change, as well as the methods to computationally model such changes, this project will focus on ensuring that the computational approaches measure what they’re supposed to measure.
This includes fine-tuning machine-learning methods to capture different types of change, as well as ensuring that the measures derived are robust against external confounders, which may arise either from the data itself or from the uneven performance of the methods themselves. Further, the project involves building adaptable environments which should enable the easy application of these methods to new data and questions. The selected doctoral candidate should have prior knowledge in natural language processing/language technology and/or data science.
Application Deadline: 28.3.2024
