7. Fully Funded PhD Position in Ultra-intense laser-plasma interactions

Summary of PhD Program:

Rapid developments in high power laser technology have enabled new regimes in laser intensity to be reached, which has opened up new frontiers in science via the production of extreme pressures, temperatures and intense electric and magnetic fields. With the advent of multi-petawatt-class lasers on the horizon, e.g. via the European extreme light infrastructure (ELI) project, unprecedented intensities will soon be achievable, giving rise to a new high-field physics phenomena in which large fractions of the laser energy is absorbed into gamma-rays and subsequently electron-positron pair creation. The gamma-rays are produced by synchrotron-like radiation of electrons accelerated by the laser and the resulting radiation force can dominate the motion at ultra-high intensities, making this potentially the most intense gamma-ray source in the laboratory.

11. Fully Funded PhD Position in Suction Caisson Behaviour under Pressure Cycling

Summary of PhD Program:

Suction caissons are a type of foundation commonly used to support offshore wind turbines in deep waters. They are installed by pumping water out of the caisson to create a ‘suction pressure’ (i.e. negative pressure relative to the ambient pressure) inside. Pressure cycling, which involves the cycling of the suction pressure, is often used to continue caisson penetration into the seabed when constant suction pressure is not effective. However, there is currently no method for predicting caisson penetration under pressure cycling, which can lead to significant uncertainty. There is also a critical lack of understanding of the potential effects of pressure cycling on the subsequent in-service performance of the caisson.

17. Fully Funded PhD Position in Dry Carbon

Summary of PhD Program:

The world’s largest industrial countries’ climate change commitments have given rise to a new urge for a green industrial revolution where lighter engineering structures such as composites are needed to reduce Co2 emissions and carbon footprint. Finding tremendous application cases in the fast-growing industrial sectors such as aerospace, automotive, and construction, has created a remarkable growth rate prediction for the composite market size, which is expected to reach 144.5 billion USD by 2028. The market is expected to expand at a Compound Annual Growth Rate (CAGR) of 6.6% from 2021 to 2028. A large part of the market (about 70%), particularly for Carbon Fiber Reinforced Polymer (CFRP) composites, is predominantly driven by the aerospace sector led by Boeing, Airbus, and defense.

Application Deadline: 30 November 2023

18. Fully Funded PhD Position in Beam-driven plasma wakefield acceleration

Summary of PhD Program:

Our approach is to combine the best of beam-driven plasma wakefield acceleration (PWFA) as well as laser wakefield acceleration (LWFA) to generate the highest quality electron bunches ever produced. These will then be essential ingredients for highest performance future light sources such as FELs. International flagship experiments (at conventional accelerators such as E-210 “Trojan Horse” at FACET/SLAC, at FLASHForward, and at CLARA/Daresbury) will be complemented by hybrid LWFA experiments at laser-plasma-accelerators worldwide. In addition, first-class high performance computers and state-of-the-art simulation codes (particle-in-cell etc.) will be used to model the interaction, and to help understand it theoretically. The electron beam driver will set up the plasma wave, and a low energy laser pulse will ionize an additional plasma component locally within this plasma wave. This leads to ultracold bunches, which are a prerequisite for the ultrahigh bunch quality.

21. Fully Funded PhD Position in dielectrophoretic point-of-care devices

Summary of PhD Program:

This project aims to develop next generation POC devices incorporating a reagent free sample concentrator and a sensing element. We have recently developed a dielectrophoretic (DEP) device to concentrate analyte molecules from very dilute solutions to a region of interest. This makes it viable to detect ultra-diluted (pM-fM) analytes without the need of any sample pre-concentration or amplification. Additionally, DEP has been widely demonstrated to permit the selective concentration of analytes of interest by tuning the parameters and device architecture. We aim to integrate this technology to the POC devices to effectively enable reagent-free analyte concentration for simplified high-throughput analysis.

22. Fully Funded PhD Position in Super-resolution imaging of biological organisms

Summary of PhD Program:

A key aspect of the group’s research involves imaging small particles of diamond known as nanodiamond (ND). This material offers many advantages as a fluorescent label for biological applications. Its biocompatibility, potential sensitivity to electric and magnetic fields, lack of photobleaching and the possibility of targetting specific neural structures are all of particular interest to researchers in neurophysiology. By utilising Stimulated Emission Depletion (STED) microscopy, in conjunction with adaptive optics, it will be possible to image ND tens of microns into tissue with a resolution of 50nm. Achieving this resolution will allow imaging of synaptic sites, the anatomical features where signals are passed from one neuron to another, thereby allowing a better understanding of the propagation of information through the brain.

Application Deadline: Open until filled

23. Fully Funded PhD Position in 5G-based Passive Sensing

Summary of PhD Program:

With the rise of “smart” devices and Internet of Things (IoT), modern and future wireless communication technologies, such as 5G, are moving to higher bands in the electromagnetic (EM) spectrum, previously reserved for sensing applications. Due to the similarities in terms of bandwidth, operating frequency and hardware between the communication and radar systems, passive radars exploiting communication illuminators have been proposed in recent years. The main principle is that instead of using a dedicated transmitter, a passive radar receiver could use communication transmissions as illuminators of opportunity to perform remote sensing.

15. Fully Funded PhD Position in In-Process Inspection of Nuclear Components

Summary of PhD Program:

Traditionally, welding and inspection of high-integrity joints are separate, sequential, often manual processes in manufacturing and repair. Ultimately, these limitations reduce productivity, throughput, schedule certainty and increase rework if defects are detected at weld completion. As welding is a dynamic volumetric process, fusing joints of depth and width, this project seeks to exploit the volumetric imaging capability of ultrasonics, and introduce this inspection modality directly into the welding process control loop. By investigating robotic in-process ultrasonic inspection and control, this project aims to deliver high-integrity welds right, first time, every time and overcome current technical and process limitations.
