1. Fully Funded PhD Position in Molecular Biology

Summary of PhD Program:

The project investigates bi-directional communication between the nervous system and the microbiota in the skin of zebrafish. Topics of particular interest include the role of chemosensory cells in detecting and regulating the microbiota, and mechanisms by which these cells alter host behaviour. A person who is employed as a PhD student shall primarily devote his-/or herself to his/her own education. The project and research environment will give the dedicated student the opportunity to train as a first-class researcher.

Application Deadline: 2025-01-09

2. Fully Funded PhD Position in Computational Science and Engineering with focus on digital physics and machine learning

Summary of PhD Program:

The doctoral project explores techniques for creating hybrid models that combine physics-based models and numerical solvers with deep learning, as well as novel ways of embedding these models in the systems for motion planning and control of robots and machines. The systems are thereby made aware of physics, which aims to make them safer and better at adapting to sudden changes in the environment. The project focuses in particular on the physics of mobile machines operating in rough and deformable terrain, equipped with manipulators for digging and loading granular materials and objects.

3. Fully Funded PhD Position in Mitochondrial Protein Quality Control during Ageing

Summary of PhD Program:

The PhD project in the lab of Andreas Kohler focuses on the quality control of mitochondrially-encoded proteins. Mitochondria are vital cellular organelles originating as endosymbionts and hence, containing their own genome. Encoded proteins are major building blocks of the respiratory chain, important for cellular energy homeostasis and thus, for cellular functionality. To maintain cellular health during ageing, protein quality control (PQC) of mitochondrial proteins is essential. Although we have a growing understanding of how PQC of proteins encoded by nuclear DNA works, PQC mechanisms of mitochondrially-encoded proteins remain elusive. Our research aims to decipher the molecular principles of these PQC mechanisms in health, age, and disease by using Saccharomyces cerevisiae as major model systems.

4. Fully Funded PhD Position in structural biology of virus replication

Summary of PhD Program:

The PhD student will use state-of the-art methods such as cryo-electron tomography of cells/tissues and biochemical reconstitution to study the replication of positive-sense RNA viruses. This is a vast group of viruses responsible for serious diseases such as Dengue, Chikungunya, TBE and viral myocarditis. To copy their genomes, these viruses remodel the cytoplasm of the infected cell to create viral replication organelles. Despite their central role in virus infections, our understanding of the structure and function of replication organelles is still limited. The PhD student will study fundamental questions regarding the structure and function of replication organelles.

5. Fully Funded PhD Position in Molecular Biology

Summary of PhD Program:

Chronic infections and antibiotic resistance are urgent global health issues. This project uses AI and single-cell technology to study bacterial survival mechanisms in infections, focusing on key pathogens and their resistance. Tasks include exploring in-patient bacterial transcriptomes, identifying in vivo-mimicking conditions, and analyzing survival mechanisms of bacteria that escape antibiotic treatment. A person who is employed as a PhD student shall primarily devote his-/or herself to his/her own education. The project and research environment will give the dedicated student the opportunity to train as a first-class researcher.

6. Fully Funded PhD Position in Computing Science with focus on serverless edge AI

Summary of PhD Program:

This project aims to investigate and develop a serverless edge AI framework that addresses key challenges, such as enabling learning and inference at the edge for efficient resource orchestration, dynamically relocating workloads, supporting FaaS application mobility, and forecasting energy use and workload distribution across the cloud-edge continuum. By building an optimized framework with advanced algorithms (e.g., deep neural networks, sequence modeling, and multi-objective optimization), this project will enhance edge-based learning and decision-making, allowing for efficient orchestration of distributed resources. Key functionalities include intelligent serverless function execution, smart edge cluster provisioning, on-demand workload relocation, and device-specific model personalization. The framework and algorithms will be rigorously tested in real-time and simulation environments, demonstrating notable advantages over traditional centralized cloud models.

7. Fully Funded PhD Position in Informatics with a focus on Information Systems

Summary of PhD Program:

The PhD position has a particular focus on AI-based automation (e.g. autonomous forest machines, drones, and robots) and its organizational implications. It is situated in a research group at the department conducting research within the field of Information Systems (IS) focusing on the digitalization of human-natural systems and specifically forestry as an empirical industry context. The position is part of an externally funded research project which investigates the role of AI-based automation in forestry. The project includes faculty members from multiple universities as well as international collaborations and involves industry collaboration within the field of forestry digitalization. Empirical studies of AI-based automation in forestry, will be the focus of the PhD project. Against this background, the applicant is not expected to have in-depth knowledge about forestry or the forest industry. It is however key that the candidate is curious to conduct empirical studies in order to generate an understanding of the impact of digital technologies on the forest industry through an Information Systems perspective.
