7. Fully Funded PhD Position in innovative rotor-nacelle system design and analysis for modularized blade systems
Summary of PhD Program:
The overall research goal is to develop an innovative blade design with a partial pitch control concept The partial pitch concept has a pitch bearing on the blade unlike a normal pitch concept which has the pitch bearing at the blade root. Individual Pitch Control (IPC) methods can be adapted since only a small part of the blade needs to be pitched. The proposed partial pitch IPC blade may enhance wake mixing capacity resulting in fast wake recovery. Various partial pitch design and control options will be investigated to maximise the load reductions and wake recoveries.

8. Fully Funded PhD Position in Prediction and Modelling of Damage Mechanisms of Exra-Large Wind Turbine Blades
Summary of PhD Program:
The objective of the PhD study will be to evaluate risks of wind turbine blade failure and damage by increasing the blade sizes, up to extra-large wind turbine blades. With increasing wind turbine blade size, the likely damage mechanisms of wind turbine blades are changing. Torsion forces become stronger, leading to the possible blade, and buckling collapse. This leads to changes in main blade damage mechanisms, different m those observed in current blades and collected in failure reports. In this work, you will investigate mechanisms of damage of extra-large wind turbine blades, using the methods of computational mechanics and finite element modelling. You will develop computational models of wind turbine blade damage under the mechanisms specific for extra-large blades, including increased tip velocity and the larger role of torsional forces, and explore solutions to mitigate the damage risks.

16. Fully Funded PhD Position in Physics-informed Deep Learning for Automated Analysis of Energy Materials
Summary of PhD Program:
This PhD is part of the IMITATION (Image interpretation by taught simulation) project that explores the interplay between physics-based simulations and deep learning. X-ray and neutron imaging are becoming invaluable tools for the non-destructive visualization of the internal structure and composition of energy materials, such as electrodes for batteries and electrolysis cells. However, the analysis of the collected data is still largely performed with classical methods that rely heavily on human inputs. These methods are time-consuming and error-prone, limiting the accuracy of the quantifications and predictions of materials’ properties and performance. Deep-learning methods offer new possibilities for improving the data analysis workflow, but their success requires large amounts of training data, not readily available in the field of X-ray and neutron imaging.

19. Fully Funded PhD Position in Biomaterials-based Approach for the Creation of Artificial Red Blood Cells
Summary of PhD Program:
Blood is crucial for our survival and the only way to substitute for blood loss occurring during accidents or surgery is by using blood from donors. However, blood transfusions have some limitations and risks: before blood can be transfused, there is a need for typing and matching due to the different blood groups causing fatal delays in emergency situations. Also, blood has a short storage lifetime, which makes it impossible to create large blood supplies to be used in acute disasters such as earthquakes or plane accidents. Furthermore, blood transfusions can help spreading new viral infections, like it happened with HIV in the 80s. Thus, developing a new oxygen-carrier solution for use when red blood cells are neither an option or available persists as one of the foremost important challenges in biomedicine.

20. Fully Funded PhD Position in Chemical Persistence Research
Summary of PhD Program:
Biodegradation is the dominant removal process for most organic chemicals that are emitted to the environment. Recent research at DTU Sustain has resulted in a new research and testing platform that allows simultaneously determining the biodegradation kinetics of a large number of chemicals. The chemicals are tested in mixtures to generate a high number of well-aligned data and they are tested at low environmentally relevant concentrations to avoid self-inhibition of the biodegradation process. This PhD project will extend this research to the biodegradation and persistence testing of chemicals in various effluents that are discharged to the environment.
