1. Fully Funded PhD Position in FLOW – Protein Quality for Health
Summary of PhD Program:
FLOW aims to uncover the molecular principles of how the cellular protein quality-control network modulates the fate of proteins from cradle to grave. Molecular chaperones and the degradation machinery determine the fate of proteins, and failure to do so leads to diseases as divergent as neurodegeneration or cystic fibrosis. The FLOW consortium, a unique and highly interdisciplinary team, aims to discover, rebuild and control the triaging of protein fate. We do this by combining biochemical, biophysical, cell biological, computational, and genetic methods, from single molecule to cell.
Application Deadline: 30 November 2024
2. 03 Fully Funded PhD Position in Making Sense of Communities of Arms
Summary of PhD Program:
ARMIES is a five-year project supported by a European Research Council (ERC) Starting Grant. The project aims to establish a new research agenda that centralises the firearm as a sensational actant that shapes everyday practices and relations, creates divergent communities, and (re)produces power structures within local and global spheres. The project centres around an ethnographic analysis of the everyday deployment of firearms and their societal impact. It examines and compares the various ways firearms produce communities and focuses on groups that are overlooked in the field of gun studies, such as gun owners’ associations and hunting clubs.
Application Deadline: 15 November 2024

3. Fully Funded PhD Position in Agent-based modelling for reconstructing the history of culture & language
Summary of PhD Program:
The aim of this project is to understand and quantify the roles of sociocultural and biophysical factors in the evolution of linguistic diversity using an agent-based modelling approach. The spatial agent-based model should simulate how and where languages (agents) change, merge, and split over time. You will use linguistics theory in combination with large datasets of environmental, demographic, sociocultural and linguistic variables to define the model rules.
Application Deadline: 21 October 2024
4. Fully Funded PhD Position in Human Dimensions of Human-Wildlife Interactions
Summary of PhD Program:
Numbers of several wild mammal species are increasing in the Dutch landscape, while free-roaming cattle and horses (hereafter, large grazers) are also increasingly used in nature management. For a densely populated country like the Netherlands, this means that there are constant interactions between people and wild mammals or large grazers. While these are often experienced as positive, they also sometimes lead to conflicts: between people and animals, or between people. With a broad consortium of researchers and societal partners, WildlifeNL studies ways to support coexistence between humans and wildlife.
Application Deadline: 31 October 2024

6. Fully Funded PhD Position in Ecology of Human-Wild Ungulate Interactions
Summary of PhD Program:
As a PhD candidate in Ecology of Human – Wild Ungulate interactions, you, as part of the WildlifeNL team, will focus on studying the behavioural interactions between wild ungulates and inhabitants in two living labs, Grenspark KempenBroek and Nationaal Park Zuid-Kennemerland. You will use technological tools to firstly better understand how and why people and wild ungulates react to each other in the ways they do and in certain cases come to conflict. In doing so, you will pay special attention to the relationships between human activity/behaviour (particularly land use and nature/wildlife management) and the factors that influence animal behaviour (particularly food availability and fear/disturbance).
Application Deadline: 31 October 2024
7. Fully Funded PhD Position in Ecology of Human-Large Grazers Interactions
Summary of PhD Program:
We investigate the interactions between humans and animals, and explore how the behaviour of wildlife and humans can be influenced in such a way that a low-conflict coexistence of humans and wildlife becomes possible. The research is approached through diverse scientific disciplines in close cooperation with various societal partners, such as nature managers, farmers, hunters, animal welfare organisations and government agencies. We are currently looking for a team of six PhD candidates with backgrounds in ecology, social science and philosophy.

8. Fully Funded PhD Position in Visual Analytics for Explainable Visual Rehabilitation
Summary of PhD Program:
As PhD candidate in this project, you will conduct independent, high-quality research resulting in a doctoral dissertation. Your research will focus on designing a Visual Analytics solution to analyse data from rehabilitating patients with hemianopsia (partial blindness). With the support of explainable AI models, you will develop Visual Analytics dashboards for exploring complex data recorded from the training patients including eye tracking, task progress, and success rates. By quantifying model uncertainty, these dashboards will enable therapists to monitor and improve patients’ visual rehabilitation progress.
Application Deadline: 15 November 2024
9. Fully Funded PhD Position in Impact of Digital Technologies on Public Education
Summary of PhD Program:
Over the past two decades, Big Tech companies have steadily increased their influence over public education. This influence has become particularly evident with the rise of platforms and artificial intelligence (AI). Big Tech conglomerates are restructuring the education sector by incorporating new generative AI (GenAI) infrastructures and applications into their own educational services, while simultaneously integrating them with third-party edtech vendors.
