5. Fully Funded PhD Position in Non-concurrent control use in confirmatory platform trials

Summary of PhD Program:

The use of non-concurrent controls in randomised trials is a controversial topic. (1) However, there are scenarios where the use of appropriate-chosen non-concurrent controls could be advantageous. For example, in a platform study which has added a new experimental arm during recruitment such as FLAIR (2), comparisons could be more efficient if we include information from controls enrolled in a platform before the addition of the new arm. Similarly, in a study that stratifies tumours into, increasingly rare, molecular sub groups such as FOCUS-4 (3), the feasibility of undertaking randomised comparisons with concurrent controls reduces.

7. Fully Funded PhD Position in Probabilistic corrosion analysis for secure long-term geological disposal of nuclear waste in high-chloride environments

Summary of PhD Program:

Geological Disposal Facilities (GDFs) are deemed the safest option for nuclear waste disposal, employing a system of natural and engineered barriers for secure storage. Crucial to this process are robust containers manufactured from materials such as stainless or carbon steel, shielded by backfill materials consisting of cement or clay at depths reaching hundreds of meters into rock. Preserving these containers for thousands of years requires a clear understanding of corrosion rates, corrosion product formation, and gas generation, particularly in high-chloride aqueous environments; a vital yet understudied aspect relevant to the UK’s GDF program.

8. Fully Funded PhD Position in Investigating porosity changes and stress mechanics of corroding nuclear wastes under confined expansion

Summary of PhD Program:

This PhD project will work alongside leading teams within the University of Leeds and Sellafield Ltd, to investigate the nature of waste evolution under storage conditions in order to predict volume changes and resulting forces generated on confinement packaging. Specifically, under interim storage, Magnox alloy undergoes a series of physical and chemical changes; such as corrosion reactions forming brucite, as well as with CO2 to form hydromagnesite and other magnesium hydroxycarbonate phases as a soil/clay like sediment bed, which will gradually dry-out over long timescales.

10.
Fully Funded PhD Position in Towards digital evaluation of patient-specific wrist repair

Summary of PhD Program:

The PhD project will first assess the type of movements likely to create tissue damage following wrist repair: you will create computational and experimental models to identify the type of movement generating tissue-device contact. The project will then explore one of two avenues: 1. Assess the tissue-level damage propagation for the tendons of the wrist. This will require the development of new lab-based and computational methods, to enable comparing the possible damage created by off-the-shelf devices and patient-specific devices from Attenborough Medical 2. Explore design optimisation with participant or patient data.

11. Fully Funded PhD Position in The Economics of Rail Transport: Cost-Benefit Assessment of Innovation and Econometric Modelling of Supply and Demand side relationships

Summary of PhD Program:

The 2011 European White Paper on transport foresaw rail becoming the main means of medium distance passenger transport and of long-distance freight transport. This policy was reiterated as part of the EU Green Deal (2019), and a set of policies were put forward to achieve this, including innovations in rail transport driven by a major research programme (Shift2Rail and now Europe’s Rail); see Nash et. al. (2021). If innovation were able to achieve the objectives of the Shift2rail / Europe’s Rail programme, including doubling capacity and halving life cycle costs, it would make an enormous contribution to the competitiveness of rail transport.

13. Fully Funded PhD Position in Multi-scale corrosion assessment of additively remanufactured metallic components

Summary of PhD Program:

This PhD will investigate the corrosion behaviour of additively remanufactured stainless steel in collaboration with Sulzer. ‘Additive remanufacturing’ utilises additive manufacturing techniques to rework damaged or worn components, restoring their function with notable cost, lead-time and environmental benefits to industry. Despite the unique benefits of remanufacturing, there is a requirement to understand the aqueous corrosion behaviour of additively remanufactured components to enable wider adoption of the technique. This interdisciplinary PhD project will develop the necessary corrosion understanding of remanufactured stainless steel in aqueous CO2-containing environments, typical of geothermal energy and carbon capture infrastructure.

14. Fully Funded PhD Position in Non-periodic structures in metal–organic frameworks

Summary of PhD Program:

Changing the way we use energy is pivotal in reducing emissions, and understanding the detailed chemistry and structure driving materials technologies offers a key route to energy efficiency. Metal–organic frameworks (MOFs) show exciting promise for chemical separations as well as in membranes for batteries to fuel cells – and even as protective coatings for semiconductors used in solar energy and lighting applications. Often the properties of interest in MOFs, from pore structures to chemical functionality, are controlled by the crystal structure. But the details of how individual molecules enter and interact with MOF pores and how MOF structures change upon heating, melting, or interfacing with other materials is often non-periodic, that is, a deviation from the crystal structure.
