1. Fully Funded PhD Position in determination of the structure and performance of organic friction modifiers
Summary of PhD Program:
Friction consumes large amounts of energy. When dissipated in car brakes this is good, but residual friction in an engine, wind turbine or boat hull leads to large losses. Much of our knowledge around friction comes from the automotive industry, where fuel economy shows an inverse relationship with friction. Hence there have been a number of methods employed to reduce friction in engines including organic friction modifiers. These oil additives are known to reduce friction and the question is why? The overall aim of this collaborative project between the University of Cambridge and Infineum is to build on our understanding of how friction modifiers function (in solution and at the solid/ liquid interface). We have built a molecular understanding and now need to relate this to the resultant friction.
Application Deadline: 31 July 2024
2. Fully Funded PhD Position in Targeting the microbiome to treat chronic pain
Summary of PhD Program:
Chronic pain is a common cause of disability exacerbated by stress promoting a vicious cycle of pain, stress, and anxiety. Dysbiosis of the microbiome in response to negative early life experiences has been proposed to contribute to this through dysregulation of metabolite signalling within the gut-brain axis. Consequently, the goal of this studentship will be to understand the contribution of bacterial metabolites such as short chain fatty acids (SCFAs) to the sensitisation of pain sensing nerves (nociceptors) in response to negative early life stress. Findings will be translated to human using clinical samples from people with dysbiosis and abdominal pain, normalised by treatment on a low FODMAP diet.

3. Fully Funded PhD Position in Hydrogenation of algal lipids to produce Sustainable Aviation Fuels (SAFs)
Summary of PhD Program:
The conversion pathways for algae lipids to HEFA-SPK will be investigated experimentally, developing a novel, algae-specific bifunctional catalyst for hydrogenation reactions. The overarching ambition of this project is to characterise the algae lipid-to-HEFA conversion process and understand the catalytic mechanisms that promote the production of SPK-desired C9-C15 alkanes from algal feedstocks. This will be achieved by analysing high-granularity experimental data obtained for varied feedstock composition/catalyst/support combinations in a single- and two-step process approach. The innovative nature of this research promises to make a significant impact in the field of sustainable aviation fuels.
Application Deadline: 31 July 2024
4. Fully Funded PhD Position in Improving the efficiency of Hydrogen generation in electrolysis
Summary of PhD Program:
Alkaline electrolysers are considered to be the most mature type of hydrogen producers; however, there is still much room for improvement in efficiency, particularly due to issues around bubble formation. Bubbles create issues by lingering on the electrodes and blocking reactant access, or though inducing concentration overpotential from micro-convection during bubble growth and departure. In this project, we will investigate the processes behind nucleation, growth and eventual separation of these bubbles. We will look at this at macroscopic, microscopic and nanoscopic lengthscales and at timescales from below ms to many seconds, and under a variety of industrially-relevant operating conditions including appropriate flow regimes.

5. Fully Funded PhD Position in Small Animal Studies
Summary of PhD Program:
Junior Clinical Training Scholars will receive training and tuition as they rotate through anaesthesia, cardiology, diagnostic imaging, orthopaedics, dermatology, ophthalmology, internal medicine, neurology, oncology, clinical pathology and soft tissue surgery and be supervised by recognised specialists in each field. Scholars will also have responsibility for primary care cases seen at the hospital’s charity clinics, and be involved in supervision and guidance of final year veterinary students. Scholars will be an integral part of the out of hours care of animals within the hospital, especially within the intensive care unit.
Application Deadline: 11 August 2024
6. Fully Funded PhD Position in Medical Oncology
Summary of PhD Program:
This Senior Clinical Training Scholarship (SCTS) provides an outstanding opportunity to study for a postgraduate qualification in Medical Oncology and is available to start from 2nd December 2024 or as soon as possible thereafter. The Scholarship will provide a solid foundation in all aspects of small animal medical oncology, including experience in radiation therapy, internal medicine, cardiology, soft tissue surgery, neurology, clinical pathology and gross pathology. The Queens Veterinary School Hospital is an approved training centre for both medical and radiation oncology. The main aim is to prepare the candidate for the examination for the European Diploma in Small Animal Oncology.
