1. Fully Funded PhD Position in Decentralized Machine Learning
Summary of PhD Program:
Machine learning (ML) has enabled a breakthrough in the development of artificial intelligence in recent years. Centralized ML systems collect large amounts of data, e.g. from the Internet, and use it to train their models (see ChatGPT, LLAMA, etc.). However, only data that is publicly accessible can flow into the models. In many areas, data protection prevents data access, e.g. for medical and other personal data.
To make such private data usable for model training, decentralized machine learning (also known as “federated learning”) relies on leaving the data with the data sources (the “clients”). Instead of sharing the data, a local model is trained on the local data on each client and then aggregated on a round-by-round basis to obtain a global model.

2. Fully Funded PhD Position in fundamental turbulence research
Summary of PhD Program:
Turbulence is ubiquitous in nature and technology. Yet, developing theories of turbulence, which ultimately all modeling applications rely on, remains an outstanding scientific challenge. The goal of the EU-funded project UniTED is to combine theory and new computational approaches to tackle this long-standing problem and enhance our fundamental understanding of highly turbulent flows.

3. Fully Funded PhD Position in optoelectronic semiconductors
Summary of PhD Program:
Typically, electronic devices based on integrated circuits run on electrons as signal carriers and correspond to an interconnected network of logic gates that generate a binary output “1” or “0” according to a combination of input stimuli. In this project, our aim is the development of devices for signal transduction that run on photons rather than on electrons for exploiting the parallelism that is inherently possible with optical signals. In order to do so we want to combine the expertise from various fields including photochromic molecules, semiconductor quantum dots and nanofabrication techniques.
