4. Fully Funded PhD Position in neuroscience

Summary of PhD Program:

Prof. Claudia Kathe at the Department of Fundamental Neurosciences at UNIL is seeking a PhD student with a background in life sciences, who is interested in neuronal networks in the spinal cord. Our research uses a molecular systems neurobiology approach to unravel the critical role that different cell populations of spinal cord play in motor function, and what happens to these neuronal circuits in neurological disorders such as spasticity. Spasticity often occurs after a spinal cord injury, stroke or diseases like cerebral palsy, and affects more than 12 million people world-wide. It is a condition that causes involuntary and painful muscle spasms, and no effective treatments currently exists. Furthermore, our laboratory is also interested in studying the aberrant patterning of the spinal cord in neurodevelopmental disorders such as cerebral palsy. Our overarching goal is to understand the mechanisms underlying disorders of the spinal cord, allowing us to develop novel treatments.

6. Fully Funded PhD Position in Normative economics

Summary of PhD Program:

The Institute of Political Studies of the Faculty of Social and Political Sciences is calling for a position of FNS doctoral student in order to complete the team of the project Normativity and its Foundations in Lausanne School and Normative Economics , financed by the Swiss National Science Foundation – FNS (Division I), domiciled at the Walras Pareto Center for interdisciplinary studies of economic thought and politics of the University of Lausanne.

For at least a century, under the influence of a positivist philosophy of science popular in the first half of the twentieth century, a large number of economists have maintained that economics should, as a scientific discipline, free itself from any normative presupposition and renounce any analysis of norms. Today, several pressing social problems, including the ecological crisis and rising inequality, have shown the need for in-depth consideration of the issue of coordination of individual activities and evaluation of individual and collective choices.

9. Fully Funded PhD Position in alpine hydrogeophysics

Summary of PhD Program:

A PhD position is available to work with the Applied and Environmental Geophysics Group within the Institute of Earth Sciences (ISTE) at UNIL, in close collaboration with the Centre for Hydrogeology and Geothermics (CHYN) at the University of Neuchâtel (UNINE). The PhD project will address process- and methodology-oriented questions in alpine hydrogeology and geophysics. The research will be developed in the Val d’Ursé catchment, located in the Bernina mountain range in the canton of Graubünden, Switzerland. This catchment is underlain by crystalline bedrock, where groundwater storage and flow are controlled by a dense network of fractures and faults. It has a large rock glacier on its north-east facing slope, which contributes to water and solute fluxes through freeze-thaw cycles.

Fully Funded PhD Position in biology & Nutrition

Summary of PhD Program:

In the proposed project, the student will study nutritional, metabolic and epigenetic requirements in the formation of engineered human osteogenic tissues and in bones. They will apply RNAseq, gene editing and advanced imaging techniques to investigate specific pathways that impact the tissue formation. They will design novel approaches that target metabolic pathways in the bone stem cell niche to promote tissue repair. This project will build on our recent progress in this area (Okuchi et al Nature Materials 2021, Habib SJ et al Trends in Cell Biology 2022).

11. Fully Funded PhD Position in Greenland Ice Sheet dynamics

Summary of PhD Program:

A PhD position on the long-term stability of the Greenland Ice Sheet’s kilometre-thick ice is funded for four years as part of the Swiss National Science Foundation project ‘FlowState: Melting, hydrology and ice flow at high elevations of the Greenland Ice Sheet’. The overarching objective of the project is to quantify the impact of high-elevation surface melting upon the ice sheet’s dynamic stability through the 21st century and beyond. The project will measure and then model basal hydrology and ice flow in areas where surface meltwater drains to reach the ice sheet bed through ice which is around a kilometre thick.

This position focuses on using field data to (1) understand the meltwater-forced dynamics in the field area and then (2) upscale that knowledge to other areas of the ice sheet and over longer time periods using remotely-sensed observations of hydrology and ice flow. As part of the first objective, the candidate will be embedded in field campaigns on the ice sheet surface each spring and will be around one month long.

13. 02 Fully Funded PhD Position in Machine Learning for Weather/Climate Super-Resolution

Summary of PhD Program:

Recent progress in computer vision has accelerated the development of statistical downscaling, which uses statistical models to improve the spatiotemporal resolution of impactful climate variables, such as extreme temperatures, wind gusts, and precipitation. Machine learning (ML)-based super-resolution algorithms, which learn from data how to best generate high-resolution images from their low-resolution version, are gaining traction because of their improved accuracy and low omputational cost once trained. However, they are rarely designed to perform well on extremes, and their robustness is usually only tested in the present climate, where training data are available. These limitations prevent the widespread adoption of modern ML to better constrain uncertainties in the forecasting of local extremes and in the high-resolution projections of climate change.
