3. Fully Funded PhD Position in Debt Behavior

Summary of PhD Program:

The Department of Economics and CEBI is pleased to announce openings for two fully-funded PhD scholarships as part of the research project, ‘Labour market effects and debt re-organization from wage garnishment.’ In a financial landscape where households owe a staggering 150 billion DKK to the Danish government, imagine the challenge of collecting unpaid debts from countless individuals. Our mission is to unveil the stories of these debtors, decipher their strategies for overcoming financial challenges, and explore the broader impacts. Do they find themselves caught in a web of debt elsewhere, struggling to break free? How does wage garnishment affect their labor supply, and what ripple effects does it send through their families? Moreover, how does this massive debt overhang shape inequality in society?

8. Fully Funded PhD Position in Pain in Multiple Myeloma

Summary of PhD Program:

The aim of the project is to identify novel targets for the treatment of bone pain in multiple myeloma. Multiple myeloma is the second most common haematological cancer and it is characterized by a proliferation of malignant plasma cells (myeloma cells) in the bone marrow, which often causes osteolytic bone lesions. At the time of diagnosis, more than half of the multiple myeloma patients report bone pain, which is often severe and impairs their quality of life. However, despite the impact of pain on these patients, there is limited knowledge on the underlying mechanisms and a lack of effective treatment options for the pain.

9. Fully Funded PhD Position in Pain in rare bone diseases

Summary of PhD Program:

The aim of the project is to identify disease mechanisms underlying pain in the rare bone disorder fibrous dysplasia and to test the in vivo efficacy of novel therapeutic approaches. An important, but neglected aspect of bone pain is the pain of rare bone disorders. This project will focus on fibrous dysplasia, a rare bone disorder where constitutively active cAMP in bone marrow stromal cells leads to a disorganized and structurally vulnerable fibrous-osseous tissue in one or many bones. Bone pain has been reported in a majority of fibrous dysplasia patients. However, despite the impact of pain on these patients, there is limited knowledge on the underlying mechanisms, and effective treatment options.

19. Fully Funded PhD Position in Biology of phage and antibiotic resistance in Staphylococcus aureus

Summary of PhD Program:

Phages are viruses that infect and kill bacteria and phage therapy is considered an alternative for treatment of bacterial infections caused by antibiotic resistant pathogens. However, bacteria can become resistant to phages and a central question is how this affects antibiotic susceptibility. In this project we will examine links between bacterial resistance to phages and antibiotics for the human pathogen, Staphylococcus aureus, including the role of anti-phage systems such as CRISPR-Cas. We will also examine how simple changes in bacterial gene expression may affect phage and antibiotic tolerance under varying conditions such as those found in vivo. The project will involve a variety of microbiological, genetic, and biochemical techniques including genome and RNA sequencing and state-of-the-art tools for investigating phages. Also, it will involve two research stays in project partner laboratories. Ultimately the goal is to enhance our understanding of phage-bacterium interactions and apply the knowledge to new therapeutic solutions to address the challenge posed by antibiotic resistant pathogens.
