1. Fully Funded PhD Position in Correlation ensembles in complex networks
Summary of PhD Program:
The project is centred on characterizing a new type of complex network ensemble. In studying complex systems, researchers often use graph-sampling methods to build networks obeying given constraints, such as a degree sequence or a joint-degree matrix (JDM). This project concerns how to directly determine the JDMs corresponding to a given degree sequence. JDMs uniquely specify the degree sequences of the graphs that realize them; however, the vice versa is not necessarily true, as, in general, each degree sequence can be realized by graphs with different JDMs. Currently, the only way of determining the typical degree correlations of a graph family is sampling their degree sequence or degree distribution and then measure the correlations of the resulting networks. The first goal will be to create an algorithm to build and sample the JDMs corresponding to a given degree sequence without passing through the middle step of explicit graph construction, using a self-consistent approach to identify the bounds on the elements of partially built matrices.

6. Fully Funded PhD Position in deep learning for neurodegenerative disease detection
Summary of PhD Program:
Neurodegenerative diseases, such as Alzheimer’s disease (AD) and Parkinson’s disease (PD), affect tens of millions of people worldwide and cause a heavy economic burden on societies. Early diagnosis and an accurate characterization of disease progression are critical for treatment and improving patients’ quality of life. However, current methods rely on expensive and time-consuming mental status examinations and neuroimaging scans, which can often be inaccurate. In this PhD project, we aim to develop nonlinear signal processing, systems engineering, and advanced deep learning techniques, including graph neural networks, to capture spatial and temporal features of EEG signals and characterise neurodegenerative diseases. This will be based on the existing work from the PI’s groups.

8. Fully Funded PhD Position in microbial metabolites
Summary of PhD Program:
Understanding the mechanisms by which microbial metabolites influence health and disease of colon epithelial cells presents an opportunity to design novel, game-changing preventative strategies that will preclude the development of cancerous hallmarks and inhibit tumour cell growth. Our recent pioneering work profiling the expressed genes of the gut microbiota (the metatranscriptome) was the first investigation of in vivo microbial activity in CRC. It revealed cancer-specific changes in microbial metabolic activity and evidence that the availability of secreted metabolites to colonocytes is changed (Lamaudière et al., 2023a, 2023b). Further in vitro analyses showed that metabolites secreted by cultured anaerobic meta-bacteria inhibit cancer cell viability and proliferation, affecting several key CRC hallmarks simultaneously, including energy metabolism, redox status, epigenetic and apoptosis.
Application Deadline: 25 October 2023
9. Fully Funded PhD Position in Long Document Summarisation through Propositional-Level Comprehension
Summary of PhD Program:
This project aims to develop novel solutions for long text summarisation by extracting and representing the text structure and by modelling the process of text comprehension. We call this paradigm summarisation through comprehension. Methodologically, summarisation is similar to comprehension, first by information filtering, then by information synthesis. Cognitive scientists believe that comprehension is to reason over a coherent representation of text meaning, basically a propositional network of facts in the text, which provides both the cognitive basis and computational basis of salient content extraction and coherent and consistent summary generation. Meanwhile, we will study the effective ways of modelling the explicit and latent structure of long text into the summarization algorithm.
Application Deadline: October 2023
10. Fully Funded PhD Position in Connected Autonomous Vehicle
Summary of PhD Program:
The adoption of autonomous vehicle technology promises to deliver a wide range of social, economic, and environmental benefits. The magnitude of these benefits is in turn dependent on how we assess vehicle behaviour. Scenario based testing aims to assess the behaviour of automated vehicles using realistic and often complex test scenarios that the vehicle might encounter on public roads. Each scenario is defined by a vast number of parameters making the exploration of the scenario parameter space challenging. Assessing vehicle behaviour, where the full extent of the scenario space cannot be fully exploited, is therefore challenging and leads to risk that parts of the parameter space critical to evaluation of a vehicle’s performance remain unexplored.
Application Deadline: October 25 2023
11. Fully Funded PhD Position in Anelastic Coriolis-Centrifugal Convection
Summary of PhD Program:
This project tackles the long-standing challenge of understanding how convective flows in liquid planetary cores generate and sustain the magnetic fields of planets through the dynamo process. The project explores the radically new idea that the elusive type of flows able to generate magnetic fields may be produced by tornado-like vortices. The successful candidate will implement the more refined anelastic approximation for rotating convection into our in-house code goldfish to realistically model gas giants such as Jupiter and Saturn. With this new version of the code the PhD researcher will determine if such elementary process can influence the global magnetic field in gas giants. Ensuing numerical simulations will then seek to identify signatures of local dynamo action that can also be observed and measured via space missions and analyse corresponding available data, e.g., for Jupiter obtained from Juno.
Application Deadline: 25 October 2023
12. Fully Funded PhD Position in Rapidly Rotating Rayleigh-Bénard Convection
Summary of PhD Program:
The PhD researcher will study these NOB effects in the asymptotic “ultimate state” of convective turbulence by means of numerical simulations using our in-house code goldfish. This extreme regime of convection has challenged previous numerical models but incorporating the NOB effects into the code will enable the PhD researcher to unequivocally diagnose its emergence for the first time and allow meaningful extrapolation to geophysical and astrophysical settings.

Application Deadline: 25 October 2023
17. Fully Funded PhD Position in Stability and transition in compressible shear flows
Summary of PhD Program:
Laminar-turbulent transition, the process of how laminar flows become turbulent, is critical in many engineering applications. For example, the onset of turbulence dramatically increases the drag and heat transfer on the surface of aerial vehicles or compressor blades leading to increased fuel consumption and decreased system performance. In these high-speed flow systems, it is important to consider the fluid compressibility that introduces additional phenomena such as heat transfer, acoustic waves or even shocks if the flow is supersonic. While compressible turbulence has been widely studied in simulations and experiments, there is less theoretical study on how compressible flows become unstable and turbulent via the transition.
Application Deadline: 25 October 2023
18. Fully Funded PhD Position in Deep Learning on Neurophysiological Signals
Summary of PhD Program:
New cost-effective and accurate diagnosis tools and techniques are therefore urgently needed especially for the early detection and prediction of AD and PD at the individual level. Over the last decade, electroencephalography (EEG) has emerged as an economical and non-invasive alternative technique for the study of neurodegenerative diseases. It is well-known that AD and PD patients are characterised by a reduced complexity of cortical activity and a slowing of oscillatory brain activity, therefore, it is important to study how neural activity is coordinated across different spatial and temporal scales for the diagnostic purpose. In this PhD project, we will investigate how brain connectivity analysis, network theory, and advanced deep learning approaches (e.g. RNN, GNN, transformers) can be integrated to develop new EEG-based biomarkers for the early diagnosis of neurodegenerative diseases.
Application Deadline: 25 October 2023
19. Fully Funded PhD Position in Nonequilibrium two-phase flow in disordered media
Summary of PhD Program:
The displacement of a fluid by another in a disordered porous material, for example migration of water and gases in soils and rocks, is often out-of-equilibrium. This means the flow occurs in a highly nonuniform manner (both in space and time), exhibiting rate-dependency as well as path dependency (hysteresis), the latter intimately related to memory and energy dissipation. While it is known that these behaviours at the large (macroscopic) scale emerge from microscopic (pore)-scale mechanisms and the rough energy landscape associated with microscopic heterogeneity, the link between these remains elusive.

22. Fully Funded PhD Position in Tailoring diabetes prevention for menopause
Summary of PhD Program:
There is not seen to be a one size fits all approach to managing midlife changes in women, but rather a tool kit of synergistic strategies is needed. Women need to be empowered to understand symptoms and how to manage menopause. Doing so will give women a better chance in preventing type 2 diabetes. In this PhD, we recognise that people’s perceptions and actions are influenced in part by how we, as a society, communicate; particularly by what we hear, read and see. Concerningly, not all of the information being shared online and through media outlets is accurate. Research can be misrepresented and concepts conflated, leading women to unrealistic expectations around menopause treatments and health risks.
Application Deadline: 25 October 2023
23. Fully Funded PhD Position in Distributed Multilateral Trust Model in 5G/6G Mobile Communication Networks
Summary of PhD Program:
The emerging fifth/sixth generation (5G/6G) of mobile communication networks will enable real-time communications for a wide range of state-of-the-art and artificial intelligence (AI)-driven applications, such as connected and autonomous vehicles (CAVs), tactile communications, intelligent internet of medical things, and connected robotics, which will accelerate the digital transformation of vertical industry sectors and significantly reshape our economies and lives. Because 5G/6G wireless networks are more open and diverse than previous generations, cyber security is a critical challenge they should intrinsically deal with to avoid introducing additional vulnerabilities into the sectors they are supporting. At the same time, given that 5G/6G networks could be potentially controlled by many operators using different management architectures, their security requirements cannot be met by the standard security trust architecture, which frequently relies on the security perimeter at network boundaries.
Application Deadline: October 25 2023
24. Fully Funded PhD Position in Explainable AI for Computational Algebra
Summary of PhD Program:
A Computer Algebra System (CAS) is a piece of software that performs symbolic mathematical computations with exact precision, as a human mathematician would by hand. These tools are used regularly within science, industry and education. There has been increasing interest in the use of ML within mathematical software since many algorithms come with choices which have no effect on the mathematical correctness of the output, but greatly affect its presentation and the resources required to find it. Most recently, there has been some evidence that Explainable AI techniques, i.e. ML models which are interpretable by a human, can be used to identify new knowledge that can be used directly in computer algebra algorithms. This projects seeks to explore this cutting edge area of research.
Application Deadline: 25 October 2023
25. Fully Funded PhD Position in artificial intelligence
Summary of PhD Program:
This project aims to develop a sophisticated multi-agent system that integrates human expertise and artificial intelligence to enhance coordination and situational awareness in real-time logistics operations. By leveraging the strengths of both humans and intelligent agents, the system will enable effective collaboration, leading to faster decision-making, reduced response time, and improved operational efficiency. The key focus of this project is to create a human-in-the-loop AI-based system that supervises the behaviour of autonomous vehicles (AVs) within the multi-agent system. By utilizing a hazard probability map, the system will generate parallel mission plans for the AVs, ensuring that mission overlap, and duplicate information are avoided.

For this, we will develop novel ways of processing human body scans incorporating machine learning using deep neural network to generate (1) highly accurate clothing size prediction for different fashion brands, and (2) highly accurate human fitting avatars and virtual clothing assets that can be retargeted to human avatars.
Application Deadline: October 25 2023
27. Fully Funded PhD Position in Building strength in the menopause
Summary of PhD Program:
There is not seen to be a one size fits all approach to managing midlife changes in women, but rather a tool kit of synergistic strategies is needed. Women should understand the powerful impact of health-related behavioural approaches to help menopause-related symptoms, as well as long-term disease risk reduction. Doing so will give women a better chance in preventing type 2 diabetes and other health concerns, such as cardiovascular disease. An integrated ‘sitting less and moving more’ message is a key component for midlife women. People spending >4 hours sitting and <5 minutes doing physical activity each day are at greatest risk of all-cause and cardiovascular disease mortality. Intervening using a staircase approach encourages manageable increases in physical activity and interruptions to sitting.
